Agree mostly with Heimdall post of Dec 1. You can eat very well in Greece without breaking the budget.

I normally shop at small markets for breakfast and lunch meals then go out at night for dinner.

I try to find tavernas that meet local's needs rather than tourist's needs where you'll find more traditional meals.

Most of my dinner meal costs are well under 15 euros which includes starter, bread, main course and 1/4 carafe of wine. Many tavernas will offer free apertizers and after dinner desserts and/or drink.

Avoid places that look to be filled more with tourists than locals.

Greece is one of the best bargains in the world with some of the best and under appreciated food. If you want gourmet food, high-end wine and maitre d' service I'm sure you can find that in Greece . . . however how "Greek" it will be is a matter of debate.

I agree, crazyh. We were happily surprised with the low price on dinners out. And we easily found little markets for sandwich makings, etc.

I am on a diet where I mainly eat only fruit. I went to Italy snd went off my diet 6 times because Inwas craving something energy dense- I bought some portions of cooked food recipes at deli counters in grocery stores and twice at the kind of restaurant where youncan point to what you want in a food display case, you pay theersom standing behind the case, and the person brings the food to you where you are ditting. The concept of deriving enjoyment from eating so-called delicious foods doesn’t exist anymore.

Inam a novice traveler. I ended up spending just under $3,000 us dollars visiting Italy in July. My airplane tickets cost just under $1,500 round trip Detroit to Rome and back.

In Italy, on most or every evening, I handwashed my clothes in the hostel bathroom sink or bede in the time or in less time that you might spend sitting in a restaurant. I did end up meeting and talking to some people in the hostels I stayed in, in Italy. I don’t smoke or drink alcohol, so by default that saves me money. If there is an orchestra concert, I would consider spending money on it. €12-15 is a days supply of food if you just buy from food markets or grocery stores.
