Glasgow or Edinbrough
 

If you had only 2 or 3 days which place would you choose to visit(Glasgow or Edinbrough)? Which city would be more interesting to get a general idea of Scotland in a short time? If anyone has a favorite, please let me know and why. I want to get Scotland into my England visit and I only have a few extra days. Thanks for any advice anyone might have to share.

I've never been to Glasgow, but do think Edinburgh would be a great intro to Scotland. There's so much history there, plus it's easy to do a day trip to Stirling or St Andrews if you like.

Edinburgh, for sure. Lots more to see in terms of historical sites as well as vista.

My sister and I went to both... Edinburgh is without question the more beautiful and historic city. We had a lot of fun in Glasgow, but it was mostly because of the people. The city itself is like the Scranton of Scotland - grey, dingy and meandering.

Iwould agree that Edinburgh is probably the best choice if you only have time to visit one. But,Glasgow as grey, dingy, meandering. Ouch! I really don't think so.

There is a lot to see/do in Glasgow. But there is much more to see/do in Edinburgh and the view of the castle looming over the entire city is unforgettable.

If you had 5 nights - then 2 in Glasgow and 3 in Edinburgh would be great. But w/ only 2 or 3 days total - Edinburgh for sure . . . .

I'd been contemplating between the two cities too, and I’d decided on Edinburgh… . Looks like that’s the consensus here. We also have only 3 nights, and had to pick between the two.

I knew I'd get in trouble for my description of Glasgow. Apologies - my sister and I really enjoyed the city (and LOVED the people), but it just paled in comparison to the shiny beauty and grand monuments of Edinburgh.

Agree that while both merit a visit, if you only have time to see one, make it Edinburgh (most beautiful city in the UK, in my -biased- opinion).

Edinburgh for pretty. Glasgow for soul.

It's only an hour by train or bus between the two so staying in one & visiting the other isn't a problem

I prefer Edinburgh, but Glasgow has great museums.

If by "get a general idea of Scotland in a short time" the original poster means get to know Scottish people, I recommend Glasgow. The people I met there were super friendly and open, especially for Brits. Edinburgh has high culture and high art and high prices, plus tons of tourists. Glasgow feels more like a city where ordinary people live.

For a 2 day stay in the States would you choose San Francisco or Pittsburgh? Nothing at all wrong w/ Pittsburgh and the people are great but San Francisco is a world famous destination for good reason. Same w/ Glasgow v Edinburgh.

BTW - you won't get a "general idea" about Scotland if your time is limited to either city.
