Getting to Venice from Paris
 

My first time in Europe, which mode of travel to Venice from Paris is best? How far is it? If by train what is the cost? Thanks

Hi Lois. The best travel time from Paris to Venice is 10 hours 30 minutes with changes in Milan and Verona.<BR>The fare from Paris to Milan is less on weekends because the French give lower prices at that time.<BR>You travel by TGV to Milan and then change to Italian train.<BR>Note that Venice has two train stations.<BR>Mestre and Santa Lucia. Trains to the east from Paris leave from Gare de Lyon and Gare de l'Est. With some now leaving from Paris Bercy, but those are usually night trains.<BR>Given the length of the trip, I would fly. But remember that CDG airport is a ways out from the city center.<BR><BR>The closest town in Germany to Paris via rail is probably Saarbrucken.<BR>Why? Curious question.

Lois, you may want to consider the night train from Paris to Venice and back. That way you don't have to spend time in transit during the day, and you save the cost of a hotel room that night. The SNCF website quoted a fare of 102.7 Euros for a second-class couchette for one way. If you're still interested in going to Germany, consider night trains from Paris to Munich, Munich to Venice, and Venice back to Paris. Each leg would cost about $100.
