We got a lot of ideas from Munich Found (Bavaria's City Magazine in English). They have a web-site: www.munichfound.com
Can buy magazine in train station news kiosks.
Two places they recommended in Feb. 2005 issue for "cheap eats" we tried and enjoyed:
Hofbraukeller - Innere Wiener Strasse 19 in Haidhausen. (http://www.munich-info.de/biergarten...elcome.de.html) They have all the Bavarian standbys, and about one-third the price of Hofbraushaus. More locals than tourists. We had a tasty meal for about 5-6 EU each. Another "cheap eats" was Cafe im Hinterhof, also in Haidhuasen (not far from Max Weber Platz or Gasteig). It is set back in a little courtyard and has great breakfast and light lunch. We went three or four times on our last trip to Munich.
Some we enjoy for more of a "splurge" are:
Katzlmacher - great Italian in Schwabing. If you go with a group of six or eight, they often pre-arrange with one of the group to play "tricks" as they are serving. It can be a lot of fun.
Kafer Schanke - Prinzregentenstrasse in Bogenhausen. Above a gourmet deli. Great food. Sometimes you see famous politicians and celebrities there.

Benjarong - Falkenturmstr. in city center - very nice Thai.

There are a few others I can't recall off the top of my head. I'll try to look at my notes and post again.

Just thinking about this makes my husband and I want to be there.
