Getting Around and Dining in Munich
 

With help from this forum we have a place to lay our heads while in Munich. Now, can you help us with two other concerns. I wear an artificial leg and walk quite well, but distances and steps can be a hindrance at times. What will be the best means of transportation (other than taxi) for me - we are staying at Hotel Uhland. Also, any recommendations on good restaurants in Munich?

Spatenhaus has good, authentic German cuisine, and reasonably priced. Augustiner Beer Gardens down the street from the main train station has not only good food, but great beer. ((b))

The casual restaurant Peterhof is right on the Marienplatz. It features excellent wurst, homemade sauerkraut and mustard, and a huge variety of breads.

Liebighof im Lehel is very nice--and reasonably priced.

You will love the Uhland. Great people, quiet street and great breakfasts. There is a U-Bahn station about two blocks from the Uhland at Teriesenwiesse (sp), the Oktoberfest grounds, but you may have to negotiate about two flights of steps down to the trains. I never looked for elevators but there are various escalators in the U-Bahn stations.

I second the vote for the Augustiner for very anthentic Bavarian fare and great beer. Also the Andech's am Dom is right behind the Frauenkirche. They are the same people as the Andech's monestary south of Munich. The Ratskeller under the Neues Rathaus (the glockenspiel place) has good food also.

You will love the Hotel Uhland. We were there last June and it was exactly what we'd hoped for. The staff there is very helpful, too, so ask them for suggestions. They directed us to some very good restaurants within blocks of the Hotel itself.

Early October...right after the Octoberfest.

twint31 - Weather will probably be in the low to mid 60's f. October isn't a real rainy month in Munich.

A good Italian restaurant near the Hotel Uhland is La Fiorentina on Goethestrasse.

The weather forecast would be a good alternative ;-)

The tram and bus transport network is very extensive in Munich, it would be much more convenient to take them instead of underground, besides the lively street sights. Tourist centre offers maps for transport system.

Excellent weather conditions! Thanks for another idea for eating, too. A friend suggested we take a bus tour the first day we are there to get an overview of the city so the next day we could revisit places of interest or find new places. We will be tired the first day, but I don't want to spend all of it on a bus. Has anyone done this?

I have used hop-on hop-off busses as a good first day activity in London, never in Munich. It is a pretty passive way to get your bearings without expending a lot of energy after a long flight. You can always hop-off if something intrigues you.

I don't recall seeing a hop-on/off bus in Munich. There is a one hour tour bus that leaves across the street from the train station. It's a good introduction to the main sights in Munich.

A great alternative but on a Saturday only would be the guided Tramway tour of the MVG. (the company which operates busses, trams and the underground). Tramway Line 19 passes through many of the interesting places except for Schwabing. You can also design you own hop-on/ off "schedule". Most bus lines operate every 10 min.
