Great thread!
topping...

frenchie Sep 11th, 2002 07:37 AM

Julie, try 'Allure' by Chanel. It's a little lighter than 'Coco'.
I love 'Coco' myself, but wear it only in winter.

Gigi Sep 11th, 2002 11:20 AM

I used to use a wonderful french perfume - years ago - but for the life of me, I can't remember the name, something like Bal de ? I wonder if it is still available

Tammy Sep 11th, 2002 11:37 AM

Gardenia by Chanel

frenchie Sep 11th, 2002 11:59 AM

For Gigi,

'Bal à Versailles' by Jean Desprez.
Still available. See:

http://www.perfume-style.com/p_bal_a_versailles.asp

Gina Sep 11th, 2002 12:27 PM

My favorite is L'Air Bleau (I think that's the spelling). I get it at Marshall Fields. While in Paris, I found it at the Guerlain store on the Champs Elysees, but the price was higher than I pay here in the U.S.

Gigi Sep 11th, 2002 01:55 PM

This further proves that Fodor's is the greatest - thanks Frenchie - I'm so glad to hear the name - that's it! and to know I can still buy it. Thanks so much.

joelle Sep 11th, 2002 02:46 PM

Here's another vote for Amarige from Givenchy and Allure from Chanel.

Mona Sep 12th, 2002 06:12 PM

A favorite of mine is Samsara by
Guerlain, but it can be a little heavy
for office wear.
Opium is great too.

Mel Sep 12th, 2002 07:38 PM

What a fun thread! I'm a Guerlain woman, too. In summer I wear Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune and in winter I still like Shalimar. I'm sorry to hear about Ode--I was hoping I just couldn't get it in the US anymore and looked forward to finding it in Paris in October.

I wore Tresor for years, but it finally seemed too "sweet" to me.

Several years ago I bought a small vial of a Guerlain perfume in Paris that I used up and it was thrown out and I've searched for it ever since. All I can remember was that the packaging had lots of greenery--tropical almost--and I swear the name had something like "Eden" in it. If anyone can help me before I go back I'd be SO grateful--it was wonderful!

frenchie Sep 12th, 2002 11:53 PM

Mel, you can check about the different Guerlain perfumes here:

http://www.guerlain.fr/

Otherwise, you will surely remember, when in Paris in a Guerlain shop (or department store), when you see all the different bottles.

As far as I remember, Cacharel has a perfume with 'Eden' in its name. Don't recall it for the moment.

Mel Sep 13th, 2002 04:09 AM

Thanks, Frenchie! I'll check out the Web site now!

Actually, that perfume could have been by another company. Don't know why I remembered it as Guerlain, but I'm going to check out Cacharel!

Ann Sep 13th, 2002 09:51 AM

I am enjoying this! Some of you seem
quite knowlegeable about perfumes
(especially Frenchie)
My favorite is Vanille by L'occitane.
I also like Noa by Cacherel(do they
still make that?)

frenchie Sep 13th, 2002 11:24 AM

Ann, yes Noa is still made, but Cacharel doesn't make that much publicity for it, at least not here in Europe.

http://www.cacharel.com

Mel, if you're not sure about who made it, you better go to a department store (Le Bon Marche, Galeries Lafayette or Printemps) in Paris. They all have huge perfumery departments and will know what you're looking for. They also have testers, in case you're not sure. Once you smell it, you'll know.
Little Bear is wishing you bonne chance! ;o)
Mel Sep 13th, 2002 11:56 AM

Merci,Frenchie! I'll take your advice and hit the stores.

Oh, and, bon voyage, Little Bear...

frenchie Sep 13th, 2002 12:08 PM

Thanks, Mel.

I am going to get a bottle of 'Very Valentino' by Valentino tomorrow at the tax free shop. Just love it and haven't worn it for quite some time.

s.fowler Sep 13th, 2002 12:11 PM

Moi, je prefere "Caleche" par Hermes ou "Anais, Anais" par Cacherel.

Bon voyage petite-ourse ;)

frenchie Sep 13th, 2002 12:17 PM

O la la, Sally!
I used to wear Hermes' "Amazone" for years.

JOdy Sep 13th, 2002 12:22 PM

I've worn Ma Griffe by carven for years...then I'll alternate sometimes with Anais Anais. I used to love Snob but haven't seen it for years!

I find you can order almost anything from www.perfumania.com at excellent prices and free shipping over $59.00

lizbeth Sep 13th, 2002 12:56 PM

Perfume has been a mad passion of mine all my adult life (in fact, in many ways it prepared me for certain aspects of adult life!). There's so many fragrances I enjoyed years ago which no longer exist. Does anyone remember the following:

Casaque by Jean D'Albret

Bigarade by Nina Ricci

L de Lubin by Lubin

and many others.....

On a related subject, how's the shopping at CDG for duty-free perfume?
The last time I was in Paris I had to run to make my flight, so I did not have time to shop. Do they just have the big name fragrances, or is the selection more extensive?

JOdy Sep 13th, 2002 01:00 PM

Oh , I remember casaque..from more years ago than I care to remember!

Duty free seems to have an extensive selection..but I don't think the prices are that great! Probably should make a list of what I can get things for here, then compare! Will be in CDG next month and may just do that!

Fleur Sep 13th, 2002 03:03 PM

Wow! Snob! That brings back OLD memories. It was hard to get then-I was told it came via the Bahamas and was a sort of substitute for Joy.
Jody, do you remember who made it? Can you get it anywhere now? Funny how fragrances put you right back into some other time and place and totally circumvent thought processes.

lizbeth Sep 13th, 2002 03:19 PM

Snob was made by Le Galion, maker of many memorable scents, and now a defunct company.

They also made:

Sortilege
Cub
Jasmin
Megara< BR>
Snob was a complex floral, heavy on the rose note and could be considered similar to Joy.

It was the mystique of perfume, its advertising, the names, etc. that was partially responsible for my love of things French in general. For instance, the name "Sortilege" - meaning sorcery, bewitchery - set my little adolescent mind aflame with just what perfume could accomplish!

andi Sep 17th, 2002 08:05 AM

A friend is going to Paris in November and I've asked her to buy me some perfumes, as well as scented body lotions (I've just read that if you "layer" the scent, starting with body lotion, then perfume, it lasts longer). Are there any good discount stores? Or can she get all this at the duty free shops? The scents I'm most interested in are Quelques Fleurs and Boucheron Femme.

I really like the smell of "Diorissimo" by Christian Dior (obviously). It is made with Lily of the Valley. I think this fragrance dates to the late 50's or early 60's although I am not sure. A lot of French women wear it in Springtime -- especially around May 1st when one offers small "muguet" bouquets (French for Lily of the Valley). It's very nice to smell on a lady!

Alan Jan 6th, 2003 06:42 AM

A woman I was dating had me pick up Izzy Miaki (sp?) when I was in Paris, and I think it smells great on her.

Sue Jan 6th, 2003 07:15 AM

I like Lolita Lempicka; it was being featured at the huge Sephora on Champs when I was in Paris last time. I buy it here at home at Sephora or SFA.

I recently gave Lagerfeld's Chloe to my daughter for Xmas b/c that's the name of her infant daughter and my first grandchild!

The very first time I was in Paris in 1961 My Griffe was very popular and not available in US.

pam Jan 6th, 2003 07:20 AM

"Coriandre" by Jean Coutier. I have worn this fragrance for over 20 years.

Pam Jan 6th, 2003 07:24 AM

In summer..I often switch to Hadrian by Annick Goutal. This is a fun post!

christinesf Jan 6th, 2003 11:36 AM

Amour de Caco..smells sweet like chocolate cake at first, but settles into sweet and spicey with wear.
Coco by Chanel. I love the way it smells on me after a couple hours.

Moi Jan 6th, 2003 12:09 PM

L'Heure Bleue (Guerlain)

susan Jan 6th, 2003 12:09 PM

I wore Diorissimo for my wedding 12+ years ago. Whenever I wear it today, it reminds me of the joy I felt that day and I try to wear it each anniversary.

I used to love Anais Anais. In fact, for my wedding, I couldn't make up my mind between the two but chose Diorissimo. I'm glad I did b/c now Anais Anais seems too sweet/over bearing.

I also love L'Air du Temps and a scent by Jean Paul Gaultier (sp?). I don't know the name of the scent but it comes in the bottle that looks like a headless, corsetted woman. Both are a bit heavy for spring/summer but good winter scents in moderation.

But, I must admit that my favorite perfumes right now are not French--at least I don't think they are since they are marketed under Clinque and Estee Lauder--Happy and Pleasures.

Kelly Jan 6th, 2003 12:23 PM

Gardenia by Fragonard is my all-time fave! I understand they have discontinued it now. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some left-over bottles?

Frangipane by Chantecaille is my second favourite but I cannot get it in Canada either. So sad!

Shanna Jan 6th, 2003 12:57 PM

Fun thread. Years ago my dad brought back from Paris a perfume called "snob" made by Le Galleon (sp) which is now out of business. That will always be my favorite fragrance, but Joy is a good stand-in; always wonderful except in the heat of summer when it's so overwhelming it makes my head swim. Au Sauvage for men. Also makes my head swim!

Grandma Jan 6th, 2003 02:35 PM

My favorite has always been Le De Givenchy.. but it has been discontinued.
(Even waiters used to comment...)Since Givenchy recently reintroduced L'Interdit (sp?) I hope they'll do the same with Le De. I've been able to buy toilet water (Le De) from perfumehut.com
which at least gives me a little reminder of this glorious perfume.

Cathy Jan 6th, 2003 03:12 PM

Does anyone remember a perfume called "Bleu de France"? My husband used to bring it home to me from business trips, and it was only sold in the Paris airport. Now it is discontinued. My husband has searched every resource, and we looked everywhere in Paris. It was "my scent", and my husband and my children identified me with it. Does anyone know of anything else that smells like it? We have not found anything that comes even close. I would love to have my signature fragrance back!

isitfridayyet? Jan 7th, 2003 04:56 AM

Joy, Channel #5 are my favorites. I think it is because my late mother always wore those two, so it reminds me of her:) I am wearing L'Heure Bleue by Guerlain today, as it is a different scent. I had a very hard time finding this scent in the states. Since I now reside in Germany, I see it everywhere. As for my hubby he prefers I wearing nothing at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (he is a man, after all). Happy tuesday

Tom Jan 7th, 2003 12:45 PM

Last week in Paris, my wife bought the perfume "Paris" for herself and Chrome for me. Both are terrific.

Yvette Jan 21st, 2003 11:32 AM

My current favorite is "Charlotte" by Annick Goutal. I cherish it because it is so pricey here.

Anyone know if (and where) you can buy "Bigarade" by Nina Ricci in the U.S.? I loved its citrus scent.
