French language quiz

Name a word that contains three of the letter 'e' in a row. (Remember: you agreed that it looks weird to anglophones.)

marcy_ Aug 29th, 2007 08:25 AM

Créée?

Robespierre Aug 29th, 2007 08:34 AM

Excellent. (Didn't fall for the "you agreed" (agréée) bait, eh?) ;)

marcy_ Aug 29th, 2007 08:40 AM

Doh! :-O

PatrickLondon Aug 29th, 2007 10:12 AM

Faux ami, Robespierre!

hanl Aug 29th, 2007 12:16 PM

This could be a fun game to play.
Who can think of a French word that contains all 5 vowels?

(conjugations of verbs accepted)
(and there's a clue in this post)

monet77 Aug 29th, 2007 12:39 PM

I didn't get your clue, but aperiodique contains all five vowels in order

grandmere Aug 29th, 2007 04:56 PM

Ils conjuguaient?

Pvoyageuse Aug 29th, 2007 05:01 PM

anticonstitutionnel (which is also the longest French word).

monet77 Aug 29th, 2007 05:13 PM

Anticonstitutionnellement is longer.

hanl Aug 29th, 2007 09:47 PM

I was thinking of jouaient, but conjuguaient is better! :)

hanl Aug 29th, 2007 09:48 PM

Oh, and aperiodique and anticonstitutionnel(lement) are better answers than mine too!

baldrick Aug 29th, 2007 10:38 PM

Not to mention aphrodisiaque...

hanl Aug 29th, 2007 11:32 PM

Does anyone know a word in French which is masculine in the singular but feminine in the plural?

Pvoyageuse Aug 29th, 2007 11:39 PM

un orgue - des orgues
l'amour - les amours

hanl Aug 29th, 2007 11:50 PM

:D

cocofromdijon Aug 30th, 2007 01:09 AM

You have to add an adjective to notice the gender has changed.
You won't know with only "un orgue, des orgues" but if you say "un grand orgue, des grandEs orgues"
"un grand amour, des amours éterneLLEs" :-)
Well done everyone!

ira Aug 30th, 2007 03:01 AM

>"un grand orgue, des grandEs orgues"<

Hmmmm.

French men have one organ, but French women have two organs?

((I))

cocofromdijon Aug 30th, 2007 03:30 AM

Hi Ira :-)
The word for these organs is organes which is always masculine, "un organe féminin". L'orgue is a musical instrument. ((8))
