I guess you should have heard:
"fete de la revolution"
and not Liberation.

The revolution is the era when we got rid of the king and then go really crazy, everybody killing everybody for no reason (called the terror era)

14 of July celebrates the day (july 14 1789) the people of paris got into the state bastille prison to get weapons (and free the 7 guys who were in it), then the people could walk to Versaille and get the royal family...
