Update after a recent visit: the Biennale, like always, opens many gates throughout the city that are usually closed (many minor expositions are housed in separate locations, often far from the Giardini or the Arsenale). This year, an absolutely spectacular sight is among them, and EVERYBODY coming to Venice before November 21st (when the Biennale comes to an end) should absolutely see it: Palazzo Soranzo van Axel, a palace neighbouring S. Maria dei Miracoli (the entrance is on the opposite side, from Fondamenta Sanudo on Rio di Ca' Widman). This is the best private late Gothic palazzo I've ever seen in Venice; it has never been accessible so far (it housed some school authorities), and it's doubtable whether it will ever be accessible again since the public authorities are about to sell it. It's now the Mexican pavilion, and you may or may not like the exposed art (I thought it was nice enough, but not spectacular), but this palazzo is a must for the serious Venice connaisseur.
Other interesting palazzi accessible only now (with so-so art exhibitions) are Palazzo Pisani Santa Marina(Cannaregio 6103) and Palazzo Palumbo Fossati, San Marco 2597.

Franco...I've located Palazzo Soranzo-Van Axel and Palazzo Pisani-Santa Marina...It took two different maps to pin-point the exact location.

I just want to double -check with you regarding the location of Palazzo Palumbo Fossati. Is it located behind La Fenice...just off Fondamenta Corner Zaguri?

Almost right - Fondamenta Corner Zaguri is to the left (coming from S. Maria del Giglio), but you have to walk right, actually on the very same Fondamenta, but the name of that part of it is Fondamenta della Malvasia. The palazzo follows on the right, immediately before Campiello dei Calegari. Big signs, however, announce the exhibition housed there, anyway.

I'm researching for our easter 2008 trip to Venice - 8 nights, i hope, in an apartment.

I found your Venice threads Franco, and am seeking information, either from you, FRanco, or from other posters, especially prr761, for reasons which will, I hope, become clear.

At present the scheme is to arrive on Good Friday. i had originally planned for the saturday, but as we are arrriving after 8pm, thought that shopping for food might be difficult on Easter sunday.

I noticed from prr's posting that s/he had obviously done some shopping at the Rialto market on the saturday mornnig - is that right?

will everything be open on Easter Sat am?

also i noticed that s/he had rented an partment in San Polo, which is where we are looking at. Prr - could you give me any more details?

I'll be very grateful for any tips that you can give me about markets and shopping in that area.

annhig, this is not exactly about sightseeing (there is another "Franco's favourite" thread about food in Venice), but here we go: shopping on Easter Sunday is not difficult, it's impossible, and this is not even a matter of Easter Sunday: except for one supermarket (at Piazzale Roma), you cannot shop food on Sundays in Venice. Saturday, on the opposite, and of course also Easter Saturday, is the main shopping day.
There are no markets in S. Polo other than Rialto, and that one is absolutely sufficient - it's one of the best markets all over Europe!
If you happen to have further questions, may I please redirect you to "Venetian food & restaurants" (or also to "Venetian accomodation")? This one should be about sightseeing & transportation... thank you!

PS - i think that when I was in Venice last nov., we came across the Osteria alla Botte by accident. My memory of our lunch is a bit hazy, except that it was pretty good. [squid-ink risotto for me I think]. unfortunately my companions were not as interested in the food as I was.

this time i'll be taking my family there to see if i'm right, and hopefully to be more adventurous in their choices than my previous companions.

this time, a real transportation question -

as we won't be arriving til after 8pm, I think we're decided upon getting a water -taxi to our apartment [more or less decided on one near the rialto so as to be close to everything].

I've seen that it's possible to pre-book a water -taxi throguh the official site - is there any pioint in donig this, or should we simply head for the taxi rank?

how easy is it to find the taxi dock at Venice airport?

annhig, I wouldn't bother making a reservation for a service as common as a taxi ahead - that seems like overdoing travel planning. But then, I wouldn't also take a taxi from the airport - going by bus plus vaporetto, or at least by the Alilaguna ferry is so much cheaper... If your concern, however, is arriving in town as quickly as possible in order to still get a meal at a restaurant, I can't quite answer back - the taxi is the quickest means of transport, no doubt, and it certainly is a problem to get a decent meal in Venice after 10 pm.

you're right about the bus & vaporetto /allilaguna options of course.

However, unless our flight gets in very early, we'll miss the 20.30 allilaguna, and the next isn't for at least an hour. Ditto the ATVO bus, though I need to check the times nearer to the time. and I do know where the bus stops, which is a bonus.

although pricey, between 4 of us, the motor-taxi isn't too bad.

I'm still wondering how easy it is to find the water-taxi dock at the airport though - anyone?
