Fodorites in Italy November!

Greetings fellow fodorites,

Dawn and I will be traveling to Italy 1-13 November and would like to meet up with other fellow fodorites. I already know that Julie, who emailed me recently, will be in Venice the same time and is interested in meeting us, as us as well as Miriam and Oliver from Frankfurt. We plan to be in Venice for 4 nights from the 2nd through the 5th; on the morning of the 6th we’ll head to Tuscay/Umbria for a few days, then head to Rome the afternoon of the 10th and fly home the 13th.

Please let me know if you’ll be around the same time as us. It will be lots of fun getting together either for drinks and/or dinner.

Ciao!

Monica
Monica, I was curious if you had decided how you are getting from Rome to Venice. Have you ever gone from Rome to Napeles, and how did you do it?

Monica Jul 30th, 2001 09:54 AM
We haven’t finalized it yet. Most likely we’ll go by train, but as I mentioned to you before, I’m going to check with the airlines. I know I can get a good discount through Tony’s company, but not sure if I can get it for Dawn.

Tony and I took the train from Rome to Naples back in 1998. It was just over an hour ride and quite easy to do. We had picked up our train tickets the day before at the Termini station. We took an afternoon train, one that had few stops.
Hi. I will be in Venice November 4, 5, and 6; in Florence November 7, 8, 9, 10; and in Rome November 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16. I would love to meet you guys in Venice if we can all work it out! When you decide where to meet, please post the information. Thanks!

Judi Aug 3rd, 2001 05:27 PM

Monica, I am really looking forward to having dinner with you and Dawn in Siena.
Lily, are you the "Lily" from Vinings? We will be in Florence on November 7. What fun to meet fellow Fodorites on the road....

Monica Aug 3rd, 2001 06:07 PM

Hi Lily,

We probably can meet up in Venice (2,3 or 4th) or Rome 11th or 12th) or if you are interested in meeting us in Siena on the 8th, the date we are planning to meet Judi. Email me directly and we all can firm up some plans!
Yes, Judi, it is Lily from Vinings! It would be very cool to meet in Florence. I hope we can work out the details at the meeting in September. Monica and Christina, I will email you closer to time and we'll try to firm up plans too. I really hope we can get together. Thanks!

Monica Aug 6th, 2001 04:28 AM

Hi Lily,

We'll probably meet in Siena on the 8th. Looking foward to hearing from you!

Monica

Monica Aug 15th, 2001 04:21 AM

Bringing this to the top!

Marj Aug 15th, 2001 07:36 PM

We will be in Venice November 2 thru 5 and would like to be included in the get together. Sounds like great comraderie and lots of fun exchanging stories and tips. Thanks Monica for posting the idea.

Moncia Aug 16th, 2001 04:17 AM

Hi Marj,

Glad to add you to my list! Once we get closer to the trip, I'll email everyone about getting together.

Monica Aug 18th, 2001 04:07 AM

Keeping this at the top with the September group! Any others going to Italy in November?

jessica Aug 18th, 2001 07:56 AM

What a truly global community! I've frequented the lonely planet board for a while, but I've not seen such comaraderie as here. What a refreshing view!

I've started a company for independent travelers to Italy, providing cultural adventures that get you behind the scenes into the lifestyles of the locals, so if you need any help (non-commercial!) or advice on planning/traveling Italy, feel free to email me.

--jessica

www.tru-europe.com

Monica Aug 28th, 2001 04:29 AM

Hi everyone,

Our plans have changed a little. We'll be spending 5 nights in Venice 2-6th, then on the 7th we'll be in Assisi for 3 nights doing day trips from there (Assisi, Deruta, Orvieto). We plan to be in Siena on the 11th. We're planning to spend 2 nights (10, 11) at a place between San Gimignano and Siena. We'll most likely have dinner in San Gim. on the 10th and spend the whole day, dinner in Siena on the 11th.

Lily, we can still meet in Venice and I can tell you there would be 10 of us for dinner! Please email me so I can correspond with you instead of here once I get the dinner date set up.

Judi, I don't remember the dates you'll be in Siena, so I'm hoping we can still get together.

Anyone else out there that will be in Italy in November?

Judi Aug 28th, 2001 04:43 AM

Hi Monica,
We will be on our way to Cortona on the 11th then on to Spello on the 14th. It appears that our trips are coming from opposite directions! Are your plans firm for San G on the 10th and Siena on the 1lth? If not, we would love to meet you in Siena on the 10th.

Monica Aug 28th, 2001 05:04 AM

Hi Judi, our plans are not set in concrete, but they are the plans we want. We'll be driving from Assisi on the 10th and want to head directly to our hotel and visit the wine towns of Chianti; then have dinner in San Gim, which is very close to our hotel. Then on the 11th, we'll have a full day for Siena. I think if the weather is bad on the 10th, we wouldn't want to visit the vinyards in rainy weather and we might switch those 2 days. But for now, Siena on the 11th. Could you come to San Gim. on the 10th?
Judi Aug 28th, 2001 05:12 AM

Well, that's an idea! San Gim wasn't in our plans but we are flexible! I'll get back to you on that when the time gets closer. Thanks.

Monica Aug 28th, 2001 06:24 AM

Judi, the distance between San Gimignano and Siena are 19 miles.

Check out http://www.shellgeostar.com/ and type in the from/to towns. Great web site for directions/distances.

Meg Aug 28th, 2001 07:54 AM

Hi there! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast in mid-November. Can anyone tell me what the weather is like? I know it is avg 65 degrees which is great but I am concerned about rain! is there a lot? does it tend to blow over quickly or hang all day??

Monica Aug 28th, 2001 10:29 AM

Here's a weather web site that may help you. http://www.wunderground.com. It doesn't show for the Amalfi coast, but you can check for historical weather for Naples.

Monica Aug 28th, 2001 10:34 AM

Meg, here's another web site that you can do a weather search: http://www.worldclimate.com

Monica Sep 8th, 2001 05:33 AM

Bring this to the top.

Maira Sep 8th, 2001 06:40 AM

Hey Monica! Your trip sounds glorious!!! As I mentioned on my e-mail to you the other day, I am traveling with Mom, Sis and niece (a females-in the -family- generational thing...) from Nov 8-17th. It appears I'll be in Rome, at a minimum the first three days, after that, looks like Assisi and Venice!!. Much like yourself, we are still tinkering with various options, one of them taking a packaged tour where all the guided visits are in Spanish. FIRST TIME taking a package tour, but you know what's been going on and it appears the sensible thing to do this time. On that note, we may be in Rome the 10th- you think we can meet at Piazza Navonna for late afternoon gelato?

Maira Sep 8th, 2001 06:45 AM

Mon, never mind, I just re-read your draft itinerary and you are heading to San Gim on the 10th instead. Bummer (for me!!). Well, if plans change and you guys will be in Rome, let me know.

Monica Sep 8th, 2001 07:19 AM

Hi Maira,

We definitely will be in the Tuscany area on the 10th, 11th. We'll most likely visit the Chianti towns, then head to San Gimignano on the 10th (dinner in San G.); then a full day in Siena on the 11th. We are researching things that are open/closed those days (Saturday/Sunday), which may make us switch the days. No, we won't hit Rome at all on this trip. The 12th, we're heading to Viareggio in the a.m.; then to Milan in the evening for our flight home the next day. I guess we'll miss each other as we are starting out in Venice, then Assisi., etc.

vipsha Sep 8th, 2001 06:16 PM

My husband and I were in Italy in the summer of 2000 - we mainly stayed in Florence. We rented a car for a couple of days and spent a day in Siena and San Gimignano. While we really enjoyed our stay in Florence, we wished we had stayed at least a day longer in the other two places, particularly Siena. If you haven't visited these places before, you might want to consider having a flexible itinerary.

Monica Sep 21st, 2001 09:00 AM

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say that Dawn and I are still planning to travel to Italy in November. But of course, we will make our final decision later on as we hear about the war situation. Take care!

Judi Sep 21st, 2001 10:12 AM

Hi Monica, we are planning to be there as well. I hope to see you in San Gim!

Monica Sep 21st, 2001 12:53 PM

Hi Judi,

Glad to hear from you! I'll be in touch again when we get closer to our trip. We won't have hotel reservations, so we'll have to figure something out.

Paul Sep 21st, 2001 01:09 PM

Monica, I'm a latecomer to this thread, but thought I'd give it a shot. My wife and I are leaving for Rome on November 3rd. We're spending a few days in Rome and then heading to Tuscany and Umbria for about eight days. The last few days we're staying in Montefalco. The middle part of the trip is still to be decided, although we're likely going to stay somewhere in Chianti. Like you, we're still planning to go, but leave open the possibility of the war situation changing things.

Anyway, if it seems like we'll be at all close, it would great to meet up for dinner or something. Ciao

eu Sep 22nd, 2001 09:14 AM

Hi there,
I've discovered thi site in Agost. If somebody comes in the Cinque Terre(I live in Manarola) contact me. I've lived in Florence for six years and I like very much to meet people from foreign country.
ciao

Cristina Sep 24th, 2001 01:01 AM

Italy in November

Just thought I would let you all know that the 1st and the 2nd are holidays here in Italy. All Saint's Day and the Day of the Dead so many things may be closed on the day you all arrive.

Also, as for Siena, most shops are closed Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. The museums on the other hand are open these days.

For info on Siena, check out http://www.comune.siena.it and click on the English part (unless you speak Italian of course :-) )

a---z Sep 25th, 2001 12:19 PM

anybody else on track for november? or perhaps rescheduled your trip during this time?

Lily Sep 25th, 2001 01:29 PM

Unfortunately, we have postponed our trip to Italy in November. I could not possibly be more disappointed, but we're hoping to go in February or March if all goes well. This was not my decision, and if it were totally up to me, I would still go. I'm sure everyone will have a fabulous time.

Helen Donegan Sep 25th, 2001 01:36 PM

Hi
I am in Umbria - near Assisi - if anyone needs any help here.
I hope you will all feel very welcome in Italy and enjoy your holiday.

Monica Sep 29th, 2001 06:00 AM

Paul, I can't remember if I emailed you directly! Please let me know.

Eu – No, I won’t be near Cinque Terre. I’m not sure about the others.

Hi Cristina, thanks for the information on Siena. We might visit Siena on Saturday instead of Sunday.

a---z, we are still on for Italy. I have heard from Judi, Julie, Miriam and her husband Oliver. Will you be in Italy too?

Hi Lily, you’ll still have a great trip in Feb/Mar. Maybe we’ll meet on another trip. Take care.

Hello Helen, thank you for your offer. If I have any questions, I’ll email you directly.
Judi Sep 29th, 2001 03:11 PM

Well, Monica, perhaps we can meet for dinner in Siena after the shops close.:-)
Lily, our plans for meeting have been thwarted again; maybe we could have a lunch date in Atlanta.
Helen and Christina, thank you for your kind offers.

Paul Sep 30th, 2001 10:26 AM

monica: no you did not e-mail me directly. Feel free to if you want to try to meet.
