Fodorite lounge????
What is this? I see it popped up by another message I posted.
|
Sarah,
The Fodorite lounge is a place that threads can get out of hand and sometimes VERY VERY NASTY AND PERSONAL!! Some of the threads are fun to read and see some of the regulars go at each other. Allot of the nastiness is of a polictical bent!! Tom |
But I asked about sunscreen and my thread ended up there? I did not send it there?
|
Most threads in the Lounge were posted there in the first place. But when the editors see a thread they don't think is all that travel-related -- they move it to the Lounge.
That is what happened to your thread . . . . |
Thanks Janisj
|
It's a place where other areas, some somewhat related to travel, some not, are discussed. And yes, sometimes it gets nasty and political--I just ignore the political nasties--what's the point, this website is supposed to be people helping each other, not putting each other down. But sometimes the discussions there are heartfelt and interesting.
|
The threads on the Forum are dominated by American politics and mind-numbing domestic trivia ("Do you own a stinky front-load?", "My cat just died"). There seems little interest in non-American topics, which suggests that many regulars have no interest in travel per se.
Some right-wing posters succeed in sabotaging otherwise good discussions by goading the others into an exchange of insults until the editors shut down the thread. I think this is a deliberate tactic, although the editors seem to be ruling with a lighter touch lately. |
Neil, I am certain your own initiated posts would be more than welcome in the lounge.
You cannot possibly tell me that cats never get lost in Australia! |
I've noticed that many of the more reactionary/insulting responders haven't even been to Europe, which I guess figures, which is why I think it's much more interesting to "hang out" here.
|
It can be fun - but it is VERY American.
So expect a lot of God bothering and prattling about cats. |
Actually, one of the most frequent political posters in the lounge has been to Europe, and more than once.
|
auder est facere - what a silly and stereotyping post.
I am american and neither "God bother" nor "prattle about cats". |
The lounge can be fun, just -as with any other forum - skim over the threads to see if you find something that interests you.
|
auder est facere - what a silly and stereotyping post.
I am american and neither "God bother" nor "prattle about cats>>>>> Don't tell the other yanks - you'll end up in Guantanemo. |
Sarah,
The tone of this thread about the Lounge sort of describes the Lounge itself, and the good thing is it allows the travel-related forums, like this one, to be freer of non-travel topics. So your post about sunscreens may well have been moved there, but may have stayed here in the Europe forum if you attach a travel, Europe-related theme to the post! (Just a survival technique). It can be hard to wade through all the rantings on the Lounge to find your lost thread! But since this is a lounge related thread, I can't resist reminding audere that one of the big recent cat threads on the Lounge recently was opened by a Brit (and debated hotly by another Brit!) |
Oh yes, how could I forget? One tip for the lounge - never ever use the phrase "it's just a bloody cat".
|
There are times when the obviously exclusionary discussions about European sports teams complete with smug posters thinking how much fun it is to converse in jargon nobody else can (or really cares to waste time trying to) understand as well as the threads which amount to little more than private e-mail exchanges could be moved to the Lounge.
IMO it isn't any worse than this forum in some respects. |
The Lounge is just a chatty forum on a wide variety of topics and yes, it does get a little heated occasionally but often it's very helpful and lots of fun.
To say that the people who post on the lounge don't travel or have no interest in traveling is just silly -- you'll find their posts all over the travel boards. As well, many posters offer excellent information about their own cities and countries. It's possible, I find, for one to travel and also to participate in non-travel discussions. We do it every day of our lives. |
Not to mention the complete isolationist attitude of many American posters who really aren't interested in anything other than NASCAR and men in tights.
They prattle on about things that no one in the rest of the world understands - whilst belittling the most popular sport on the planet. Then they go and polish their guns and count their bibles. Put it this way if you though that American Idiot was just the title of a Green Day album - spend some time in the lounge. |
audere, you need to be quiet now. You are giving yourself a very bad name.
|
The <i>Lounge</i>? Oh good god not that, not -- The Lounge!
|
audere, you need to be quiet now. You are giving yourself a very bad name.>>>>
I'm long past caring - I've had enough of 'em. |
And believe me, we've had more than enough of you!
|
I posted on the lounge for the first time last Friday because I was looking for a little encouragement when giving my notice at work. Everyone was very kind and gave me lots of wonderful advice and encouragement and I didn't receive a single snide comment, so I think it can be useful if you stay away from certain topics.

OP- The Lounge is the place for posts like yours. ACHTUNG!
The Dukester vs Farce tat for tat here is calm compared to the oft extremely viscious nature of the lounge. To me anything Europe-related belongs in the europe part - this part - because to me being informed about local things in various countries adds to my travel value and we may not come across as audere's proverbial idiotic YYYanks. The Lounge is mainly non-european oriented but rants, especially by right-wing wackos who purposely it seems seek to destroy any sense of intellectual discourse by ludacrous charges. I recently posted a European topic by mistake in the Lounge - one that i read about Europe's most dangerous roads - a real travel thing and one of the right-wing wackos habitues of the Lounge quickly posted "any road Ted Kennedy is driving on is the world's worst" see what i mean. I advise everyone to avoid the Lounge unless you have elephant hide. |

Does my bum look big in this?
|
audere - you are violating Waring's rule that if you don't pay taxes in a country you cannot comment on anything about it. Call it the Queenie rule or whatever -
|
Do you really want an honest answer?
(They never really want an honest answer) |
audere - you get carded for violating Waring's rule for discourse:
<Firstly: you are being rude Secondly: you clearly understand nothing (hence point one) Thirdly: you are a foreigner Fourthly: you pay no taxes in the UK, so what do you care. Do you hear me complaining about your nations spending?> guilty on all counts - two match suspension |
Jesus tap-dancin' christ Bob.
If everybody who didn't pay taxes in various countries stopped posting on here the place would just have Budman jabbering away to himself. He just hates other Americans. |
I have posted on both serious travel threads, inane banter about Yorkshire pudding etc, and I like cats. Reading this, I'm not sure where I fit in (if at all!) - can someone post a Venn diagram, please?
|
Fodor's created the "Lounge" as a place for non-travel posts. Sometimes they do move threads, that they feel better belong there.
As for "what it this?" - it's just another branch of the forum... like movies & book, solo traveler, whatever (see drop down menu). |
I don't understand why some people complain that the lounge is too dominated by Americans. It's not like there is a rule that only allows a small percentage of non-US people to post. I think I speak for many in the lounge that we enjoy hearing from non-US people. (Neil of Oz is one who comes to my mind.) Too American? Then post more yourself. Get your compatriots to post (but do try to keep it on the nice and friendly side - we already have enough meanies). DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT instead of whining. Jeez...... 8|
|
It's not the number of yanks - it's the type of yanks.
|
I don't want to pooh-pooh what you have said but the lounge is one place where there is a real club. Get on a thread (non-political) and watch how the members band together. Whether they are Americans or not I don't know.
|
Duh
Fodor's is an American site, run by yanks for yanks. The infidels who do manage to get to Fodor's are welcome and to me one of the best things about Fodor's - the discourse with Brits for example is edifying. But the fact that Fodor's (OK technically owned by German interests as part of Random House) is American dominated should surprise no one. |
No one forces you Brits to post on this, or any other American board-if you don't like it, then stick to the British boards-you won't hqve that problem of "too few of you" now will you?
I can tell you this much: when I and maybe one or two other Americans start posting on British boards, we get harassed almost immediately about there being too many "yanks" on the board, when did this Brit board become an American board, yadda, yadda, yadda-really nasty stuff, which of course, only eggs me on to take the ---- out of the complaining Brits and post even more. So you give it, and you get it in return-that's the way it works when you post on a public forum. If you don't like it, then it's very simple: don't come here, and don't post your complaints about what you find. I have to say also, I post on other foreign forums, Italian for one, and I never get that anti-American theme EXCEPT on the British boards! |
Does PalenQue = PalenqueBob = PalenQ ?
So where is the post about Too many yanks? I don't see it. |
Well, Audie..now you know why we won that revolutionary war against you and also hauled your butts out of the "big one" as well....any subsequent responses to that should probably be IN the Lounge <G>.
