flip flops in rome

shoes shoes shoes...more questions.

so my most comfortable shoes now are my flip flops made by Crocs. Would i be crazy to wear them in Rome?

annesherrod Apr 24th, 2007 12:56 PM

You are not crazy!! Hope you dont mind dusty/dirty toes/feet though!
If they are comfortable then wear them.

Sammygrll Apr 24th, 2007 12:57 PM

I'd like to know this too....
I grew up in Hawaii, and all we wore was slippers...or so called flip flops here.
I LOVE flippers and had to get used to something covering my toes again when we moved to Cali...
I did buy a pair of comfy sketchers, as well as Easy spirit shoes. I heard that it's very rocky and dirty, so it might be too much to wear slippers.

tcreath Apr 24th, 2007 01:07 PM

I love my flip flops but no way would I wear them sightseeing around Rome. First of all, you will be doing tons of walking because the public transportation system is quite inadequate. Then you will be walking over cobblestone streets all day. Even in a pair of really great walking shoes my feet ache after several days of sightseeing in Rome. I could only imagine how they would feel after walking around all day in a pair of flip flops with no support.

Just my thoughts.

If you are comfortable in your flip flops, then wear them. I have no problem wearing mine on cobblestoned streets (but then, I'm used to walk on cobblestones).

frank_and_beans Apr 24th, 2007 01:12 PM

mrs. beans wore flip flops her first day in Rome and the next morning her feet hurt so bad that she bought some new shoes.

I still think she knew what she was doing!

rogerdodger Apr 24th, 2007 01:35 PM

Flip flops are just fine. I am sure that they will go well with your tee shirt and shorts. Come on people, show a little class, wear slacks, sleeved shirts and shoes.

Toupary Apr 24th, 2007 02:05 PM

Crocs are now on sale in Paris -- for €49 a pair.

annhig Apr 24th, 2007 02:10 PM

hi, mom,

by all means take your flip flops - they won't take up much space in the luggage. but take another comfy pair as well - swapping shoes every day can help to relieve any aches and pains - and dan you guarantee you won't suffer from those?

regards, ann

suze Apr 24th, 2007 03:24 PM

Sure flip flops are fine, but I'd take a couple other pair of shoes or sandals or sneakers also.

Mamaw Apr 24th, 2007 03:31 PM

Personally I think Your nuts wearing flip flops in Rome. The Sidewalk and streets are dangerous (not including the drivers)uneven sidewalks, cobbled streets (killer for heels)The Roman Women walk around in 4 inch heals and I don't know how they do it.

good Tennis shoes and work boots worked for Me. But I did bring High Heeled boots and regretted wearing them everytime, but I looked good.

nytraveler Apr 24th, 2007 04:47 PM

Do not reco flip flops in Rome. Sidewalks are very narrow, uneven, sometimes cobblestone - and a lot of sidestreetrs don;t have sidewalks at all - you just walk in the (very narrow) street with the cars. Flip flops don;t give any support, your feet get filthy - and stubbing a toe is not fun.

Realize you will be walking miles every day in an ancient city - not just a few blocks in a park or a mall - or on on wide, clean modern city sidewalks.

traveller1959 Apr 25th, 2007 01:04 AM

It is an interesting psychological phenomenon:

On this forum, people tend to be extremely scary with regard to minimal risks, like being attacked by terrorists.

But they are methodically aiming at breaking their necks by wearing inadequate footwear.

When I see tourists balancing with flip-flops over the ruins on Forum Romanum, my heart stands still. As a tour guide, I would reject people wearing flip-flops.

crefloors Apr 25th, 2007 01:49 AM

I just don't get beach feet in the city, but that's me, and I agree with others that they give no support and could be dangerous...stubbed toes, twisted ankle. I won't be following you around pointing and the fashion police have retired, so in the end wear what you want to.

Vttraveler Apr 25th, 2007 01:55 AM

One more voice warning don't wear them if you are planning to do a lot of walking. And if you aren't planning to do a lot of walking, you will be missing 90% of the charm of Rome.

CRAZY4TRAVEL Apr 25th, 2007 02:16 AM

Your feet will be filthy by the end of the day and very sore I would think.

Kate Apr 25th, 2007 02:50 AM

Oh please people, there's nothing wrong in wearing flipflops if your feet are used to them. I wear them from April to October in London, including at work, with smart and casual clothes - they can be both stylish and fashionable in the right style.

LESLIEMOMOF6 Apr 25th, 2007 04:50 AM

I agree completely with most of you and Kate, in particular, I wear my Croc or my Clark or my Columbia flip flops everywhere and with most everything - I live in Florida so we also wear them year round - some of my flip flops cost me over $50.00 and on my trip to Europe this summer they will all be in my carry on. At the end of the day, my feet are not ever dirty, and if they get so in Europe, hey, no problem, I shower daily.

steviegene Apr 25th, 2007 04:56 AM

I wore flipflops and walked all over Rome... AND for all you nay-sayers my flipflops had kitten heels.
I did ALOT of walking (including along the streets, through the ruins, and up the many, many stairs at the Vatican.
I was absolutely fine, but my feet are trained for these kind of shoes - as that is basically all I wear.
I will admit that my feet were filthy by the time I walked back to the hotel. But the footwashers in the room came in handy for that!

BoniseA Apr 25th, 2007 04:58 AM

Steviegene,

That wasn't a foot washer! That was a bidet!

LOL, just kidding...

MyriamC Apr 25th, 2007 05:00 AM

I agree with the two last posters. Some of you may refer to plastic beach flip-flops but that's not what we Europeans have in mind. I have different pairs 'cause I wear them all summer (including this month as the weather in Belgium asks for flip-flops). Mine are all made from nice leather, some even have a fairly high heel, but all are stylish.

steviegene Apr 25th, 2007 05:01 AM

It probably was a bidet!
But boy - o did it feel good to soak my feet in it after a long days walking!

TravMimi Apr 25th, 2007 05:09 AM

The bidet is a great foot washer!! It's a general all around great washer.

There has been previous threads about flip flops if you go back in the subject box above. However, as someone who flys with people back and forth to Rome everyweek I would like to add my two cents. Go ahead and bring the flip flops but don't expect me to move you up to business class and elevate your foot just because you sprained it walking around Rome!Seriously, we have at least 1-3 women a week that have either sprained or broken their ankle wearing their flip flops walking in Rome.( Even my daughter who lives in flip flops at her college in Florida never wears them in Rome for the above mentioned reasons.) Hint-the red wine won't take away the pain!!!

missypie Apr 25th, 2007 05:13 AM

I wore my black, Teva flip flops in Rome with no regrets (except when it poured rain and my feet were cold and wet.) Bearing three huge babies left me with very wide feet, and few shoes are comfortable. My Teva's are terrific.

travelingmad Apr 25th, 2007 05:46 AM

I'm a doctor and for the sake of your body, keep the following in mind: flip flops (and to a lesser degree sandals) are good for the beach, as are running shoes for running, boots for trekking in the wild and walking shoes for walking.

Good quality walking shoes will provide you with heel comfort, arch support and will be easy on your ankles, knees, back and neck. You don't need to pay 300$. For 85$ you will be able to find Asolo, Garmont, Salomon or Merrels shoes that will provide you with what you need. If you want even more quality, buy Rockport, Mephistos or Clarks and the like.

It is very much possible that everything will be fine with your flip flops. But you're looking for trouble just like the guy who goes to the beach with his running shoes and soxes complaining about the amount of sand in his sneakers.

Every type of footwear has its purpose.

Travelnut Apr 25th, 2007 05:59 AM

....just don't step in any dog-poo... don't want that to 'flip flop'.

jill_h Apr 25th, 2007 07:43 AM

My husband wore his flip flops all over Italy. Never wore tennis shoes; only closed in shoes when we went out for dinner to a nicer restaurant.

MyriamC Apr 25th, 2007 10:00 AM

I would never think of wearing tennis shoes in a city. Not even in my own city.

Mamaw Apr 25th, 2007 10:05 AM

Please don't wear flip flops in the Vatican or Sistine Chapel. i don't hink they would appreicate it.

sidandspennysmom Apr 25th, 2007 10:19 AM

THANKS! I love the varied responses..and have decided to bring them with, and wear them once in a while for shorter trips around town.

I hate having my feet closed in and i HATE socks, so i am going to get a pair of mules or slides that have a covered two...maybe some Ecco's or Merrell's.

Thanks again for your opinions and concerns.

LoveItaly Apr 25th, 2007 10:32 AM

Hello sidandspennysmom, I always pack a pair of Clark flipflops when I travel. They can be used as slippers when in your room and if one is going out for a cup of coffee they are so easy to slip on. But definetly take proper shoes for walking around beautiful Rome. Have a wonderful and safe trip!

desdemona01 Apr 25th, 2007 10:43 AM

what most of you aren't aware of is that Crocs flip-flops have orthotic support--as do all Crocs. They are not traditional *beach* flip flops. They are the only brand in that style that I can wear.

When I stay in an apartment in Rome I take flip flops to run down to the grocer or to an outdoor restuarant. Be prepared for Italians to look at your toes, maybe because my nails were painted but I did notice women glancing at my toesys.

julia_t Apr 25th, 2007 11:03 AM

And I see that Desdemona has posted what others seem to have missed - you have Croc flipflops, which are SO much better than bog standard ordinary flat flipflops with little or no support.

Worry not, in Croc-flops you will have no problems at all. I wore them for 5 daus last October and apart from dirty feet - thank god for bidets! - they were the most comfortable things I could have worn on my feet. Also much more attractive than normal big ugly Crocs!

Have a great time.

Cimbrone Apr 25th, 2007 11:10 AM

Don't know about crocs, but I can't imagine doing so much walking, often on cobblestone streets, in flip flops. What on earth for? Your feet need support and protection. Not to mention how filthy they'll be in no time...

steviegene Apr 25th, 2007 11:16 AM

My feet need to look cute more than they need support or protection.

tomassocroccante Apr 25th, 2007 11:29 AM

The ancient Romans (with a nod to the Eturscans) developed road building to a science. The cobbled streets range from several hundred to thousands of years old. They are sturdier than human feet.

Granted, the ancient Romans had only sandals or the occasional army boot to wear on them. But the ancient Romans mostly died around 50, so they didn't need their feet to last as long as we do.

Two comments on flip flops: first is, on stone streets you want a THICK sole for lots of walking, to keep the unevenness from assaulting your own soles; and a firmer sole is better than a very flexible one. Second, you may not mind dirty feet, but have you considered what dirty feet look like? Just asking.

If anyone posted here that they were going to hike the mountain paths of Switzerland and thought flip-flops would be a good choice, no one would find it strange to suggest otherwise. As the doctor said, appropriateness in footwear is a matter of a) survival and b) appearance, in that order. Both have something to do with comfort, IMO ...

ira Apr 25th, 2007 12:21 PM

Hi S,

>..flip flops made by Crocs. Would i be crazy to wear them in Rome?

If you wanna wear FF, wear 'em. People in Rome will be no more offended than people anywhere else in the world.

((I))

mary09 Apr 25th, 2007 01:56 PM

I'm planning to bring my flips to Italy next month, I love them! Even though I know how my feet look after a day of walking in flip flops in New York...it is nice to have a break from closed-toe shoes! After all, this is vacation! :)
