favorite Rome restaurants??
I am making my list of Rome restaurants to eat in, but could use a few more must trys. I am looking for great food at moderate prices. Thanks for the help.
|
What neighborhood will you be in?
|
cparris, I enjoyed a restaurant called Spirito di Vino in Trastevere. It is upscale dining, great food, GREAT service and nice ambiance. The owner explained everything on the menu, spent time talking with us without being intrusive and gave us a tour of his wine cellar after dinner. It was a very pleasant evening!
|
Al Pompiere in the Jewish Quarter, about 10 minute walk from Campo di Fiore (sp?).
We were there for lunch last week on a day trip from Florence. We even had the same waiter when we visited a-year-and-a-half ago. Traditional Roman dishes that didn't disappoint. Fried zuchinni blossoms stuffed with mozarella, crispy-fried artichoke hearts, grilled very fresh seabass (fish for the day), oxtail a la vaccinara, terrific pasta primi piattis. Other than us and another couple, the restaurant had a few local families (children and grandma's) and a lot of business men in suits having luncheon meetings. Very reasonable prices for very good quality and service. Including a half bottle of house wine and a couple of glasses of whites, around Euro 60 for 2 of us. |
Just got back from Rome. We were staying near the Spanish Steps and ate at Trattoria Otello on Via del Croce three times. Tuesday night is Osso Bucco night. Friday nights they serve a wonderful ravioli with spinach. Prices are very reasonable. Ciao . . .
|
Nino's Ristorante in the bottom of Spanish Steps area.
|
Nino's did look very good. Big pot of beans cooking in a huge glass pot in the front window. You must have reservations, though. It's packed every night and there are not a lot of tables.
|
A second for Spirito Divino in Trastevere. Great food, great owners, good wine selection, a lot of fun. 2 of us ate for 125E, including wine.
|
Another vote for Nino, which is fantastic! Another "homestyle" favorite of mine is La Bucca di Ripetta at 36 via di Ripetta near Piazza di Popolo. Very good food, excellent service, and quite reasonable prices.
Buon Giorno and Buon Appetito! BC |
Last week I was in Rome and ate at "The Original Alfredo's" near the Spanish Steps. The fet. alfredo is a must try. Also it's best to make a reservation for dinner, it can get packed.
Give it a try! |
Thanks for the great suggestions so far. We are staying in an apartment close to Piazza de Popolo but don't mind eating in other areas also. In fact I would like to eat in different areas!
|
I LOVED Piazza del Popolo! Does anyone remember the name of the outdoor cafe that looks out on the piazza? I know there were two, right across the street from one another. We sat there for a long time with the sun beaming on our faces. It was soooooo nice! You are sooooo lucky!
|
Iregeo: Canova?
|
Sounds familiar. If you tell me the other one, I'll pick between the 2! Seriously, I'm remembering a black awning...
|
I recommend MYOSOTIS. Address below
Via della Vaccarella 3/5, Piazza Navona, Italy Phone: 06/6865554 Piazza Navona I had the best sea bass. They had it in parchment paper and deboned in in front of us on a silver platter. When my husband and I ate there he had an appetizer with mozerella, tomatoes and basil and a bottle of wine plus our meal and it came out to $50; it was romantic too. We found the review in the Fodors Italy book and we were glad we tried because we ate there 2 more times. The place is a little hidden so check out a book from the library if you don't want to buy it so you can have a plan on how to get there. |
Iregeo, could you be referring to "Dal Bolognese"? It's filled with a lot of "the beautiful people", and the food is okay, but the atmosphere, IMO, is actually much better if you're into people-watching and don't mind being watched yourself!
Cparris, another restaurant near Piazza di Popolo I enjoyed is La Margutta on via Margutta. It is vegetarian, but very chic, very inventive and good food! |
Nope! It was definately Canova! I didn't eat there -- just enjoyed a glass of wine, people watching, the sun and that beautiful piazza! Ciao.

Our favorite meal was at Ditirambo, in Piazza della Cancellaria. We had no reservations but walked right on in to a packed house. Mostly locals--I got the sense that tourists hadn't really discovered the place yet. I think it has a website so you can check out the menu. Innovative pasta dishes; very homey atmosphere. I think the tab was around 80 euro for the two of us.
Had the most delicious fruit sorbets for dessert, and they serve yummy biscotti with your cafe. |
I second Ditirambo and would add la Matricianella, via del Leone 4 (tel. 06-6832100), just about equidistant between the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon, west of the via del Corso -- superb fritto misto, both seafood and vegetables. And a great pizza place nearby is Il Leoncino, via del Leoncino 28, packed with locals rather than Americans. Also La Piazzetta, vicolo del Buon Consiglio 23a (tel.06- 6991640), near the Colosseum, very favorably reviewed several months ago in the New York Times.
|
The other cafe on Piazza di Popolo, next to Da Bolgonese, is Rosati. Great people watching. My favorite restaurants by neighborhood: Testaccio: Checchino dal 1887, Da Felice and Perilli; Trastevere: Lucia, Da Paris, Augusto; Campo di Fiore: Dar Pallaro, Filetarro di Santa Barbara, Ditirambo, Grappola di Oro; Peirluigi; Navona/Pantheon: Da Baffeto, Osteria da Ada e Alfredo, Cicca Bomba, Cul de Sac, Le Volte; Trevi Fountain: Piccolo di Arancia, Colline Emiliane; Spanish Steps: Buca di Ripetta, Fiascheteria Beltrame, Ciampini; Colosseum: Ulderico, Nerone; San Lorenzo: Tram Tram.

Nino's : I guess we were lucky we just dropped by (at a good time) and got a table. Cant remember what I ate, it was almost 3 summers ago... but I do remember it was VERY good and everyone in my party was satisfied!
On another note: I was in Rome for 2 weeks the last time, and almost everyday I got together with 2 or 3 people I met over there at an apperitive. Its a vinoteca? or a place where they sell wines and also have delicious appetizers and wine by the glass. We would have different prosecco (champagne like) with fab little somethings. It was @ a very good location, i;ll look for the street later. From there we would walk to dinner. |
Mine is Antica Taverna for a yummy bowl of pasta and friendly service. Look at it on my websight...
http://richardab.home.comcast.net/Fl...caTaverna.html I also have a few other receoomendation listed! |
This is great. It is our first visit to Rome. I am really getting excited.
|
Eat all you can otherwise you will regret it when you get home.
|
The new Hosteria del Pesce for spectacular fish on the Via di Monserrato.
For the best panini, the Forno Campo de'Fiori bakery. |
Trattoria Monti, via S. Vito (at via Carlo Alberto, near Sant Maria Maggiore)
Trattoria Da Luigi, piazza Sforza Cesare (off corso Vit. Emauele, near Chiesa Nuova) |
Bookchick: Thanks for the rec on Bucca di Ripetta, we're staying right near there on our trip.
|
Oh, Sera, good! I hope you'll have a great time! The waiters are the same staff of about 4 guys, they are all really great! I'm happy for you, and can't wait to hear about your trip when you return.

Nino Ristorante: Via Berogognena 11 tel.06/6795676 (From Rome)
Enoteca Al Pallamento: Via dei Prefetti, 15 |
For me the best restaurant in Rome is Myosotis (Vicolo della Vaccarella), you can also try Piazza Caprera (Piazza Caprera) for the seafood
|
I just returned from a very memorable three week trip to Switzerland and Rome as it was a wonderful religious experience being in Rome during Holy Week and Easter Sunday. In my loving wife's absence (she's having her knee operation on Tuesday), I ate at a Fodorite suggested restaurant called L'ORSO 80 located about a 2 minute walk from P. Navona. I went there for the primary purpose of ordering their MIXED ANTIPASTO. I was WARNED that it was alot of food, but didn't imagine it was THAT MUCH FOOD. It actually was NINE large bowels of food from Meatballs, Cheese, Peppers ect.. Of course eating alone made it even more OBSCENE. The price was around 10-11 Euros as it's truly a meal in itself. The place is mentioned here and under Rant and Raves. Have a great trip !!! Mike

Good morning. cparris
My imput for Roje ristorantes would be: NINO, via Borgognona, 11 AMBASCIATA D' ABRTUZZO, via Pietro Tacchini, 26 LA CAPRICCIOSA, Largo dei Lombardi, 8 RISTORANTE 34, via Mario de' Fiori, 34 Have used all a number of times on past trips, however first used 34 last November and was impressed. Richard of LaGrange Park, IL.. |
ANY restaurant in Campo Di Fiori!! We loved the corner restaurant.. i.e if you are facing the statue near Forno, then the restaurant to the right corner at the far end.. LOVELY pasta and the best pizza we had in Rome...
Gee.. I wish I was back there. :) |
L'Angoletto and Le Volte are right next to each other (and owned by the same dude...Sergio Tudini), and are very good...(I am quite picky, and the spaghetti a la vongole was 'squisito'). They are located around the corner from the pantheon in Piazza Rondanini. Buon appetito!!!
|
My favorites are La Rampa in this little piazza right next to the Spanish Steps, behind the American Express office. I remember having this delicious salmon sauce pasta. It is a favorite among locals, because there were lots of families with children there. And the water kept coming over to our table to see if we enjoyed our meal. My friend and I choose htis restaurant to return to a second time for our last day, but unfortunately it was SUnday and closed.
And Da Fortunato, on a side street leading up to the front of the Pantheon...the most delicious buffalo mozzarella...and charming old waiter who told us his life story! Both were so good...and elegant (at Da Fortunato, some patrons were dressed up in suits, but OK if you dont dress up as much). |
Cparris, thanks so much for asking this question and thanks to all who have responded. I have put all these suggestions into my file for the trip in July. Only problem is that I don't think we can try all these fabulous places in two days in Rome, but we'll have fun trying!
|
Returned last week and my favorite find was Trattoria Da Mario alla Chiesa Nuova, just off Piazza Chiesa Nuova (Via Vittorio Emmanuel).
|
we will try these suggestions.
