EXPAT websites
Wondering if anyone can recommend a website they've used for relocating to various European countries. First choice is England.
|
Lots of expat websites -- but emigrating to the UK is very (VERY) difficult.
|
Hi manager,
For Germany it's toytowngermany.com Good luck with this! s |
I really like France Today, but it's not for folks wanting to relocate to England. AngloInfo seems to have a huge following around here. I find it lame beyond belief, except for some of the used goods for sale, but then I'm definitely not part of the relocated Anglo community here. You might check out Internations, though IME it's mostly a pick-up site for single men working abroad. Sorry not to be more helpful.

A lot of these types of sites are specific to a particular country from what I've seen. Not sure if you were looking at one site for all of Europe or not. If so, you can check out www.expatica.com
www.transitionsabroad.com has all kinds of useful info for various situations, including a list of good UK expat websites https://www.transitionsabroad.com/li...te_websites_uk |
Thanks to all. Even the ones to stay away from are helpful. Thanks Christina will check those out.

If you're willing to read a book you could look at the "Living and Working in ..." guides from this outfit: Informative Books on Alternative London | Guides for Living, Working, Retiring, & Buying Property Abroad
Moon publishes similar guides. |
Once you are past the conceptual stage, wouldn't you need actual government websites to give you the requirements for relocation?
|
Yes, of course you would. You can't just "relocate" at whim.
|
There are expat Facebook groups for various cities and countries. I have a joined a couple of them (Portugal, Slovenia) just to learn more about the places I'm going to visit from people who live there, though I have entertained the fantasy of moving to Slovenia. Probably not going to happen. Still, these are great places to ask questions from people who have actually moved there so can probably help you know what to expect.
|
As far as relocation (although it has been a dream for many years), I don't think that will happen as I now have 4 grandkids here in the states and my DH is still working full time. So I am hoping to live in England anywhere from 3 to 6 months at the beginning.
|
Even for a 6 month stay, won't there be paperwork involved (is the point I was trying to make above)? I don't think a tourist allowance lets you stay that long (or maybe it does in the UK)?

Yes it does, an American is given up to 6 months just on a passport (no visas involved). Just like it is 3 months in Schengen - it is 6 months in the UK. Of course it is not guaranteed but up to Her Majesty's govt to determine you won't overstay or try to work. |
Thanks janisj. Then sounds like nanabee's good to go!!
|
nanabee: I asked the same thing a while ago: https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...he-uk-1654038/
Maybe we will meet there some day... |
eastender: did you end up staying in the UK for 6 months?

Various forums for various countries. Some are highly active. Some are almost dead |
nanabee: No, but I'm still contemplating it for next year. It is going to take quite a bit of planning, I think.
|
eastender I hope you can keep me posted on your journey! :)

I would go to the Destination Forums on Trip Advisor. The cities or regions you might be interested in. I'm guessing either thru PM's right on TA or by getting suggestions from locals and DEs there you can find blogs and websites about relocation (don't use the 'relocation' word on TA it needs to be phrased like a travel question not a permanent move to not be deleted there).
