"Europe's Most Famous Single Sight?"
 

Well i am not certain today what that Tour de France nasal Phil commentator called the Eiffel Tower yesterday as the Tour approached the capital but he said something to the xact effect that the 'Eiffel Tower was Europe's most famous sight."

Period and after relecting i could not think of a single other edifice that even comes close to being as famous when talking about Europe as the Tour Eiffel!

Id say the Coliseum and Big Ben are equally well known but the Acropolis is the best known sight.

It would be interesting to see what people from the far and middle east would say to this question.

Most famous? May be, may be not. Most recognizable? Certainly! For example, everybody heard about the Berlin Wall, show a photo of it - who will tell what they see? Eiffel Tower most people know... unless they confuse the real one with the one in Vegas :))

Now i am beginning to have my doubts if the Eiffel is say more famous than the Acropolis or Colosseum - maybe Phil was whistling Dixie and i bought it without thinking?

Neuschwanstein. Disney and 5 trillion Japanese can't err.

But I think a lot of people who see a photo of Neuschwanstein would not know the name of it. Or that it is the model for Disney's castle.
And I cannot imagine that more people go there than to to the Eiffel Tower.

When I read the topic subject I immediately thought of the Eiffel Tower, so after reading the original post, I guess I agree with the commentator...

If we depended soley on the Japanese as the standard for what is famous in Europe, Neuschwanstein would come in second to Louis Vuitton.

As it happened, the Eiffel Tower was what came into my mind when I read the title, before I'd opened the thread.

I got back from Paris 2 weeks ago... the lineups in front of LV stores almost equaled those to enter Louvre.

If someone was just showed a picture and asked to name it, Eiffel Tower wins hands down.

Colosseum and Big Ben would be distant runner-ups in my opinion.

Interestingly, last wek on Jeopardy, contestants were showed photos of famous places from around the world. The Acropolis was one of them. All three missed on that photo. I'm afraid the Acropolis just gets a nice parting gift.

I think of what those flyers at every travel agency have on their covers when they offer tours.

Eiffel Tower, London double decker bus, bobby or red London phone booth, Big Ben, Coliseum, come to mind.

The first two that popped into my head were the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum, in that order (before I opened the thread).

Getting on a plane now for Athens. Will look for this Acropolis place. Hope there are signs.

Definitely agree that the Eiffel Tower is the most recognized sight. Far more than the Colosseum or Big Ben, although they might be runners-up.

I also saw that Jeopardy question -- I could not believe that the contestants did not recognize the Acropolis. I thought that one of them would, but no. It's not very well known apparently.

In a more serious reply, I'd also assume that the Eiffel tour is the most recognized sight. Big Ben in 2nd place.

I would not have expected the Colosseum. I'd have probably chosen the Vatican/ St Peter as easy or easier to recognize.

I think that the Statue of Liberty is #1
The Hollywood sign might not qualify as it gives too much away.
Golden Gate bridge may be #2

I actually think the commentator may be right. As noted above, virtually anyone could not only name the Eiffel Tower, and I suspect virtually anyone could also tell you that it is in Paris. And it is singular in it's appearance - one could look at the Parthenon, for example, and be forgiven for confusing it with another ancient building, but the Eiffel Tower is the Eiffel Tower.

Even though, as a Brit, it guts me to say it, I thought 'Eiffel Tower' as well. Although when I see it, I don't think 'Europe', I think 'Paris'. But maybe that's because I live in Europe so am in the habit of distinguishing by country.

For USA it has to be the Statue of Liberty.

This is fun. Can we do it for other continents?
For S.America, I'm voting for the Jesus statue in Brazil (shamefully, I don't know what it's called).

Really??

Yes, really. The Parthenon is a particularly nice piece of Greek architecture, but it is just one in a long line of Greek temples that share many similar features. Look at the Agrigento Temples or those at Paestum and you will see what I mean.

Eiffel Tower is the most well known. Colosseum perhaps second. MANY people have never heard of the Acropolis and while Big Ben is memorable - not close to the Tower.

I am genuinely astounded by these claims.

What on earth do they teach in schools these days? I can understand it may not spring to mind as an iconic emblem to everyone but to say MANY people have never heard of the Acropolis is a shocking reflection of the education system.

Why? Just how much Greek history and architecture should the average schoolchild be exposed to?

Education is about balancing what you cover given limited resources (time). Shortchanging the Ancient Greeks may seem like a bad thing, but what would you suggest they replace? Should they trade study of WWII (or the plains Indians, or Sherman's March to the Sea, or Commodore Perry or...) for the study of the architecture of the Acropolis or the history of the Ancient Greeks? In the abstract, everything seems important.

Maybe it is an American thing but unless you see the Acroplois from a distance as to know its location, it could look like Agrigento.

The Kremlin is much more distinctive than the Acropolis.
I would vote for the Eiffel Tower. And it so much easier to see than the interior structure of the Statue of Liberty.

Among a couple of hundred other churches with a dome - I wuld say not.

The main thing about famous is how unique the place is - so Eiffel Tower scores highly as few people have heard of the Blackpool Tower, the one in Prague or the one in Las Vagas.

Of buildings the only one that is as instantly recognisable is the Taj Mahal

See, you say ignorance, while I think that you are valuing trivia over knowledge. Being able to pick the Athenian Acropolis out of a lineup of other acropolises or various and sundry temple complexes is fun at cocktail parties, but not overly valuable, IMO.
