Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours
Negotiation on Louisiana Purchase (I think you miscounted the position of "i")
Grandson estate is Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

(cmt, did you go to Longwood Gardens recently?)

cmt Aug 21st, 2005 09:58 AM

I'm always counting wrong!

No, I haven't gone there in a few years. Have you been there recently, during a visit to the Philadelphia area? I always mean to go there about once a year, in spring or fall, but unless I'm meeting someone there, sometimes I just don't feel like taking the hour and a half drive. I first went there when I was around five, when we lived in southeastern PA for a few years. But I never knew until about 25 years ago that there were outdoor gardens, too (my mother didn't really like taking long walks, so I guess that's why we didn't do that, though my father and I would've enjoyed it).

yk2004 Aug 21st, 2005 10:40 AM

I've only been there twice, once in Spring '01 and once in Spring '02. Enjoyed both visits a lot.

I'll have to think of a new clue.

This composer (last name: 11) suffered from a mental illness and was cured by (person last name: 4) with (method:8).

The composer subsequently dedicated a piece of his work to the person.

"n" from du Pont is the 4th letter of "method."

grandmere Aug 21st, 2005 07:07 PM

Rachmaninov was cured of debilitating depression by Carl Jung, using hypnosis.

Do you want the name of the piece dedicated by Jung?

grandmere Aug 21st, 2005 07:12 PM

Whoops--une erreur!

Piano Concerto #2, dedicated to Dahl (not Jung), his therapist.

yk2004 Aug 21st, 2005 07:14 PM

Yes!
Your turn, grandmere.

I didn't check the thread over the weekend, but it's nice to see some activity.

It's funny -- I'm listening to Rachmaninoff's own recording of the 2nd and 3rd concerti (in addition to other things) (the RCA incarnation). I'm supposed to mail this to someone I know, so I'm giving it a listen.

The 2nd concerto is surprisingly good (I've not listened to it in years).

grandmere Aug 22nd, 2005 04:53 AM

Somebody else take a turn; unable to check often from work, etc.

111op Aug 22nd, 2005 07:49 AM

I'll give one. Identify these artists and the masters under which they were apprentices. Pairs A, B, C are from the Renaissance, but not Pair D.

Artist 1 in each case is the apprentice. Artist 2 is the "master."

Pair A:
Artist 1 (8 letters). Artist 2 supposedly stopped painting when he realized that Artist 1 drew better than he did.

Pair B:
Artist 1 (7 letters). A chapel/church in Florence houses a series of ruined frescoes by Artist 2 (8 letters). The chapel/church is usually not on the radar screens of most tourists.

Pair C:
Artist 1 (12 letters) (a superstar) denied that he was ever an apprentice under Artist 2 (11 letters).

Pair D:
The standard story goes that Artist 1 (6 letters) was discovered by Artist 2 (7 letters) while artist 1 was tending to some animals (5 letters).

Letter clues:
Artist 1 from Pair B starts with "r" (from Rachmaninoff).

2nd letter of Artist 2 from Pair C is "h" (from Dahl).

"h" is the 2nd letter of the animals in clue D.

111op Aug 22nd, 2005 07:50 AM

Artist 2 in Pair A has ten letters.

cmt Aug 22nd, 2005 02:47 PM

A. Leonardo & Verrocchio?
B. Raphael & Perugino
C. Michelangelo & Ghirlandaio
D. Giotto & Cimabue & sheep

111op Aug 22nd, 2005 05:09 PM

Correct!

111op Aug 24th, 2005 11:47 AM

Where is cmt?

Why don't I continue with the above theme?

Pair E. Artist 1 = 8 letters; Artist 2 = 2 words (2, 6). [The second word means something bad and is derived from a biblical town.] However, there may be no evidence that Artist 2 was apprenticed under Artist 1, though Artist 2 was influenced by Artist 1.

Pair F. Artist 1 = 2 words (3, 8); Artist 2 = 7 letters. [The 3rd = 4th letter is a very uncommonly used letter (in English). Remembered for a fresco cycle in a palace.]

Pair G. Artist 1 = 7 letters. Artist 2 = 9 letters. Artist 2 died young. People still debate the meaning of a mysterious painting.

Pair H. Artist 1 = 7 letters. Same as Artist 1 in pair G. Artist 2 = 6 letters. Attribution of works to Artist G and Artist H can sometimes be a little unclear.

Pair I. Artist 1 = 3 words, 6, 3, 5. He was known as being a consummate painter, but his star has dimmed over the years. Artist 2 = 5 letters. (Responsible for a certain "school" in a country with six letters.)

First letter for Artist 2 in Pair G = "g" from Giotto.

cmt Aug 24th, 2005 04:19 PM

I forgot that it was may turn. I just found this by clicking on my name, but I have to go make supper now.

yk2004 Aug 24th, 2005 05:02 PM

I can only solve a few.

Pair F: Fra Angelico, Gozzoli
Pair G: Bellini, Giorgione
Pair H: Bellini, Titian
Pair I: (?) Andrea del Sarto, ?

111op Aug 25th, 2005 02:54 AM

Yes, everything is correct so far.

The school that Artist 2 is associated with in said country of six letters is also the name of a castle.

Artist 2 in Pair E is a Sienese painter.

111op Aug 25th, 2005 06:23 AM

By the way, cmt, if you're ready, feel free to ditch the rest of the clue and we can start over.

It was your turn anyway.

cmt Aug 25th, 2005 06:47 AM

Can't until tonight. Sometimes I can answer when at work if I know it, but can't take the time to make up clues.

111op Aug 25th, 2005 07:12 AM

Let's leave this one there for now then. We can start over when you're ready to give us a clue.

I can always reuse the unanswered parts for another clue when it's my turn.
