well done Wales. there, you see how generous I can be, Hets?

I was listening to the radio on the way home and that well known welshman Robbie Savage was in his element.

Were you watching, Vladimir? Your lads took one hell of a beating.

tripplanner001 Jun 20th, 2016 02:54 PM

Wow! Wales topping the group seems like a surprise, isn't it?

laverendrye Jun 20th, 2016 08:14 PM

<<Were you watching, Vladimir? Your lads took one hell of a beating.>>

Let's give it the full treatment!

Peter the Great! Catherine the Great! Alexander Nevsky! Leo Tolstoy! Rasputin! Leon Trotsky! Vladimir Lenin! Joseph Stalin! Nikita Khrushchev! Leonid Brezhnev! Boris Yeltsin!--can you hear me Vladimir Putin? Your boys took one hell of a beating!! Your boys took one hell of a beating!!

laverendrye - I dare you to go to Red Square and say that!

hetismij2 Jun 21st, 2016 04:20 AM

Ann, I would have been happy with England winning too, with Wales finishing second. I never expected Wales to get through the groups, never mind win theirs!

It is turning into a tournament for the underdogs somewhat isn't it? Where Leicester leads the little countries of Europe follow. Albania have done really well, as have Iceland either of whom could be Wales's next opponents.

We have been touring, with no TV and only occasionally internet, so missed most of the matches. We did see Portugal Iceland in a pub in Wales. A huge cheer went up when Iceland scored.
Back home to tomorrow so will be following the next round more closely.

traveller1959 Jun 21st, 2016 05:13 AM

It is always the same with the big tournaments.

In the first rounds, some of the socalled favourites play weak, often because of inner-team conflicts or lacking experience of playing together in the national team etc. (BTW, has Portugal ever achieved something, since CR7 is playing with them?)

On the other hand, there are always some surprise wins by the minor nations who usually will find their masters in the later course of the tournament (Greece was an exception, indeed).

But when the semi-finals come, you will find the usual suspects on the turf.

laverendrye Jun 21st, 2016 02:17 PM

annhig--Red Square?? I wouldn't dare say that in the semi-privacy of a Moscow hotel room!

annhig Jun 22nd, 2016 03:23 AM

I feel the same Hets - the next round is such a lottery anyway it doesn't necessarily make any difference which team you draw in the next round.

Nice that Spain and Italy have to face each other though!!

OReilly Jun 22nd, 2016 12:24 PM

Irish fans serenade English fans: Please don't start a riot' :)

hetismij2 Jun 22nd, 2016 12:37 PM

We were travelling home this afternoon, during the best matches of the competition so far. Every time I looked at my phone someone else had scored! Ronaldo finally took his hands off his hips and remembered why he was there.

Now hoping Ireland can score, because they are a welcome addition to it all, but also so Wales don't get Turkey ;).

OReilly Jun 22nd, 2016 12:40 PM

Watching Ireland versus Italy game. The Ref is a ... pranker - there were two clear penalties for Ireland. In receipt of a very big cheque from the Italians I reckon :(

OReilly Jun 22nd, 2016 12:42 PM

WE JUST SCORED!!!!!!

OReilly Jun 22nd, 2016 12:51 PM

WE WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE ARE THROUGH.

willit Jun 22nd, 2016 12:59 PM

Great win, even if against an understrength Italy, but thoroughly deserved.

So Who'd have thought it - Wales, England, Northern and the Republic of Ireland - all through, alongside the Giants such as Iceland!

OReilly Jun 22nd, 2016 01:01 PM

Lille has never seen the likes of the party that will happen tonight :)

tripplanner001 Jun 22nd, 2016 01:03 PM

Congratulations, O'Reilly. You all certainly do soccer better on your side of the Atlantic. Looking forward to seeing how far some of the underdogs make it as well as some of the titans battling it out.

OReilly Jun 22nd, 2016 02:00 PM

Aw thanks tripplanner :)

The Irish team is not great, but the fans are the very best.

I was at a party here in Dublin and the weekend and we discussed why the Irish fans are well behaved. My theory is that the last war the Irish won was against the Vikings in 1014, yet we have been battling ever since. Therefore, we turn up for battle, without any hope of winning, assume defeat, and just have a party.

Here are the Irish fans serenading a beautiful French girl. Their significant others will murder them when they get home:

bvlenci Jun 22nd, 2016 02:08 PM

Tonight was fun at our house: My husband promised that he'd cook a whole meal if Ireland won. I told him that if Ireland lost I'd eat a meal he'd prepared.

OReilly Jun 22nd, 2016 02:37 PM

Unexpected for sure. I do hope the husband is a good cook bvlenci.

Families all over Ireland are now very worried about their loved ones in France, as they were expected home tonight, and there is little chance of that.

Now, the chances of Ireland beating France is almost nil. However, every Mammy in Ireland will be down the local church tomorrow lighting candles, saying novenas and asking intervention from St. Jude of Hopeless Cases.

Stranger things have happened - Sparta trounced the Persians init?

annhig Jun 25th, 2016 09:34 AM

finally a goal in wales v NI match; sadly an inrush own goal.

That should liven it up a bit!

PS - congrats to RoI ger - as you say not much chance against France but then England have to play mighty Iceland!

Come on Boys in green, beat France please...

82nd airborne division motto is 'All American' and they have a badge with the two letters 'AA' and 101st airborne divion are called the screaming eagles.
Every good US guy knows that and every good Belgian remembers that the 101st fought like hell in Bastogne repulsing the last offensive from Hitler on our soil.

My Dad fought there and was awarded a silver star, we retraced his steps, how they did it with all those German Panzer's in the woods is beyond me. He said it was no biggie, he had a tommy gun and had to stay behind to get his guys out. He almost lost his leg in the process. He became a paratrooper because they paid 50 more a month. He received random letters from people in Belgian till he was well into his 80's thanking him.

OReilly Jun 25th, 2016 10:47 AM

Macross, that is hilarious - share with my friends and family:)

Thanks Ann. Dublin is pulling down the shutters for the game tomorrow. The GAA (Irish Football) even rescheduled a game that was supposed to kick off at the same time.

This is a grudge game - Thierry Henry and his hand-ball stunt meant Ireland did not go through to the last world cup.

If a miracle should happen, I'm honestly not sure if the nation can deal with it :)

OK guys - another video on the Irish fans:

vincenzo32951 Jun 25th, 2016 01:04 PM

How does Ronaldo keep his hair so perfect looking?

RM67 Jun 25th, 2016 01:08 PM

Croatia Portugal is hard work....can they not just go straight to penalties so I can put Netflix on...

tripplanner001 Jun 26th, 2016 07:01 AM

What a great second half!! This France-Ireland was hard for me, as I wanted to see both these teams go further. In the end, the right team goes through.

annhig Jun 26th, 2016 07:14 AM

OK guys - another video on the Irish fans:>>

Magnifique!

Macross Jun 26th, 2016 07:35 AM

I am sad, the boys in green make it so much fun. Now I can't get the fields of Athenry out of my head.

tripplanner001 Jun 26th, 2016 07:57 AM

Ann, yes! A true class act those Irish fans. They too deserve an award.

tripplanner001 Jun 26th, 2016 07:59 AM

Maybe it should be Ireland hosting the 2018 World Cup... Just a thought. ;)

traveller1959 Jun 26th, 2016 10:05 AM

>> Perhaps Germany are “peaking at the right time”.After Croatia against Spain, Italy against Belgium and England against Russia, this is the most impressive performance of the competition so far. <<

The Guardian in the 69th minute.

hetismij2 Jun 26th, 2016 10:06 AM

Having just watched Germany I think I may have watched the championship winners. OK Slovakia weren't at the same level it's true, but Germany were still impressive.
The winner of Spain/Italy will have to really be on form in the next round. Could be a great game if they are.

Now to find out who Wales face next.

hetismij2 Jun 26th, 2016 10:09 AM

Oh and a tweet from "the Queen" on yesterday's match: That's the second time Wales has knocked Northern Ireland out of Europe in 48 hours.

annhig Jun 26th, 2016 10:13 AM

can England beat mighty Iceland? or will Wales be the UK's sole representatives in the quarter finals?

that is the next important question.

tripplanner001 Jun 26th, 2016 10:32 AM

Germany all the way!!! I would have loved to see a France-Germany; a semifinal meet will have to do I guess.

hetismij2 Jun 26th, 2016 12:31 PM

I can't see Wales going any further than the next round, based on tonight's match.:(

willit Jun 26th, 2016 12:36 PM

I was about to disagree, but just seen Hazard's effort.

RM67 Jun 26th, 2016 12:42 PM

Feeling a bit sorry for Hungary who looked like they might equalise for quite a while....no chance now.

hetismij2 Jun 26th, 2016 12:55 PM
