European Championship

Pringles and wallcharts at the ready!

annhig Jun 10th, 2016 09:07 AM

Me too, RM.

In fact there is so much sport on this weekend we're spoilt for choice: the rugby from Down'Under, the cricket, the Canadian grand prix, a bit of tennis, and the footie or Footé as the BBC have it in that advert aping Versailles - very funny.

what will you be watching, [apart from the football of course]?

kerouac Jun 10th, 2016 09:52 AM

I am watching the Romanian and French fans out of my window as they prepare to go to the Stade de France.

annhig Jun 10th, 2016 10:07 AM

ooh - excited, Kerouac?

or dreading the extra traffic and people that the tournament will bring?

I have a colleague who is going next week - they have tickets for a match at the Stade de France [Wales v ?] and then Russia v Slovakia in Lille. Have you got any plans to attend a match?

RM67 Jun 10th, 2016 10:32 AM

I've entered the work sweepstake where you have to predict the winner of every single match. It took me most of the afternoon to fill out the form so apologies if you are poorly - I didn't have time to cure any deadly diseases today.

annhig Jun 10th, 2016 10:44 AM

oh dear, RM, I was relying on you!

who is going to win tonight then?

RM67 Jun 10th, 2016 11:03 AM

France naturellement!

RM67 Jun 10th, 2016 01:18 PM

Loving Slaven Bilic as a pundit!

sparkchaser Jun 10th, 2016 01:23 PM

Some rowdy Brits at a pub in Marseilles got teargassed last night and that made me laugh when I heard about it on the radio this morning.

RM67 Jun 11th, 2016 05:01 AM

Little Albania taking on mighty Switzerland :-p

annhig Jun 11th, 2016 05:36 AM

Do the french have a word for "Schadenfreude"?

stokebailey Jun 11th, 2016 06:38 AM

Who's your first pick, RM? I hope you win.

I hope the entire pub didn't get teargas. That stuff does spread in the air.

RM67 Jun 11th, 2016 06:52 AM

I have predicted France to win in our work tournament but in real life I'd obviously prefer England. That's probably well into the realms of fantasy though...

annhig Jun 11th, 2016 07:24 AM

but in real life I'd obviously prefer England. That's probably well into the realms of fantasy though...>>

it's the hope that gets you. At the moment we have oodles of that, and no results.

I've no idea how strong the Russian team is, I just hope that the football players can live up to standard set by their rugby playing colleagues earlier on today. [this does not apply to Wales].

RM67 Jun 11th, 2016 11:45 AM

Very happy with that first half. Plenty of effort. Plenty of oooos

tripplanner001 Jun 11th, 2016 12:26 PM

Joining the party too. In addition to the Euro Cup, we're hosting the Copa America (North and South America) here in the States. Going for Germany and Argentina.

tripplanner001 Jun 11th, 2016 12:28 PM

Oh, and let's not forget the NBA Finals!

Finecheapboxofwine Jun 11th, 2016 12:29 PM

The England - Russia game is on prime time tv now and Englamd just made the first goal of the game. The crowd is very loud, to say the least!

RM67 Jun 11th, 2016 12:52 PM

Unlucky at the end but an enjoyable game :-)

annhig Jun 11th, 2016 12:54 PM

Quelle catastrophe!

it will be ironic in the extreme if Wales qualify for the next round and England doesn't due to that late Russian goal!

well done Wales.

Macross Jun 11th, 2016 01:15 PM

Heart breaker, why did they take Rooney out? Dang it.

RM67 Jun 11th, 2016 01:30 PM

Courage mes amis!

annhig Jun 11th, 2016 01:37 PM

merci, mais je crois que c'est deja trop tard.

RM67 Jun 11th, 2016 02:02 PM

ce n'est pas fini jusqu a la grand dame chante!

tripplanner001 Jun 11th, 2016 04:10 PM

C'est vrai!

tripplanner001 Jun 11th, 2016 05:44 PM

USA just advanced into the quarterfinals!! What a nailbiter.

rialtogrl Jun 11th, 2016 10:49 PM

I am in Venice... quite a few bars have put televisions outside. For last Friday's game, the only places in my 'hood to watch were the Irish pubs and the sports bar Inishark. So I was glad to see lots more places showing the game last night.

Tomorrow night will be fun when Italy plays, but my money is on Spain (literally) and I will be watching that match too.

There's a great article about the Albanian team in the June issue of the British Airways mag I read on the way here. So I picked them as my long shot, and what a long shot it is.

annhig Jun 12th, 2016 12:29 AM

Go USA - what was the score?

tripplanner001 Jun 12th, 2016 03:30 AM

1-0, and we played most of the second half down one man.

Looking forward to Turkey-Croatia and Germany-Ukraine today!

annhig Jun 12th, 2016 04:28 AM

well done USA!

similar to the Irish rugby team who played with one man down for most of the match and still beat SA by 6 points. [i know that you're keen on rugby, TP!]

tripplanner001 Jun 12th, 2016 04:50 AM

Ann, when is rugby season? I'm thinking perhaps I can catch a game when I'm down under in December and January.

willit Jun 12th, 2016 06:10 AM

Trying to Multitask (impossible for anyone with a Y Chromosome). Have the football on one monitor, the cricket on the second. 5Live commentary on the radio. Missing everything important!

RM67 Jun 12th, 2016 06:45 AM

I sympathise Willit - I'm doing the same but with the football and Location Location Location...

annhig Jun 12th, 2016 07:57 AM

Ann, when is rugby season? I'm thinking perhaps I can catch a game when I'm down under in December and January.>>

Tripplanner - you'd be fine here catching a rugby match between December and Jan but I'm not sure about OZ where it will be summer at that time of year.

Rugby is essentially a winter game as is football though of course the main championships are usually played in the summer. I haven't been able to find exactly dates but so far as i can see the rugby season starts in Oz in about March and finishes in October time.

You could always go and see a cricket match!

<<Have the football on one monitor, the cricket on the second. 5Live commentary on the radio. Missing everything important!>>

Willit, what are you going to do when the Grand Prix starts???

willit Jun 12th, 2016 08:04 AM

annhig - Ignore it. I used to be a fan, but F1 lost it's attraction years ago (probably about the time of Senna vs Prost)

Actually, I need to go and do something that doesn't involve "pigging out" on sports coverage - real life perhaps.

tripplanner001 Jun 12th, 2016 08:41 AM

Drat. Even football - or soccer as we call it - is played as a summer sport, along with baseball. I suspect it's due to the number of other sports competing for attention in the winter - American football, basketball, and now hockey.

annhig Jun 12th, 2016 08:56 AM

sorry, TP. It'll just have to be the cricket then!

RM67 Jun 12th, 2016 10:48 AM

Confession: I lost interest a bit and played Candy Crush Saga during the NI match.

annhig Jun 12th, 2016 11:27 AM

You're forgiven, RM. I only caught the end of it on the radio and it sounded dire.

willit Jun 12th, 2016 11:30 AM

Still playing RM67? I'm quite enjoyong the GER vs UKR game
