Euro 2008 football

We are going to be in Vienna June 7 - 10th and see that the Euro football games are going to be held then. Didn't know that when we booked our time there. Can't change plans, we are staying at the Pension Nossek, where is that in relationship to where the matches will be held?

flanneruk May 8th, 2008 10:02 PM

"the Euro football games are going to be held then"

They're not.

There's one match in Vienna on June 8. And as far as you're concerned, that's it. It'll bring a few Croats into Vienna. Apart from that, some Austrians will travel to the ground an hour before, watch the match for 90 minutes then go home quietly.

It'll produce about as much disruption as a Boy Scout procession to church.

molker May 8th, 2008 11:05 PM

I do not believe that above poster gives a good picture of Euro 2008 in Vienna.
Yes, just one match during the time of your visit Austria - Croatia June 8.

As Croatia is not far from Vienna - a good crowd of fans from there expected.
The Stadium seats about 50000 and to my knowledge is " sold out " for this match.
The stadium is located in the 2nd district in the area of the Prater, some distance from the city center.
A new UBahn ( subway ) will bring fans from several city center stops directly to the stadium entrance- most fans will use this route as their ticket includes use of the transport system.
In addition , a fan zone has been arranged along the Ringstrasse ( the main circulat boulevard that circles the city center).
The zone itself will extend from the Hofburg Palace to the City Hall- perhaps the most visited area of the Ring.
Giant screens are erected for fans to watch matches - kiosks for food and drink and amusements for fans will be available.
The city of Vienna expects many thousands of fans( estimates of 25000 - 100000 depending on match) to use these facilities, especially as it is free to everyone.
In addition, as the above covers the entire Ring road in that area, all traffic will be detoured. The streetcars usually transiting this area will be curtailed, re routed or cancelled.
These include lines #1 #2 D and J.
all major transport for people in the city center.

Hardly as much disruption " as a Boy Scout Procession to Church."
Fortunately , Pension Nossek is on Graben , a pedestrian shopping street in the city center.
While not directly affected by the above , Graben will still see many extra people wandering around.

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 01:56 AM

It will be perfectly safe if crowded.

The Croats are pussycats and the Austrians all have to rush home to feed the women in their cellars.

What is it with Austrians and bunkers?

traveller1959 May 9th, 2008 02:22 AM

I always amazes me how much North Americans are scared by a mere sport, simply because they are not good at it.

TTJL May 9th, 2008 02:38 AM

Thanks for replys.

As for safety - no more of a concern than anytime you are in an area with a lot of people.

I am glad it will not hinder our getting to and from the airport.

The city transportation we will deal with and look forward to a new type of adventure that we hadn't planned on.

PatrickLondon May 9th, 2008 02:47 AM

>>What is it with Austrians and bunkers?<<

Roughly the same as with builders in Gloucester...

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 02:59 AM

Yeah but Uncle Fred and Auntie Rose didn't keep 'em down there - well not alive.

The other thing aboput the Euro Championship is it is the one time that all of Europe is united - we all hate the Germans.

Phil May 9th, 2008 05:23 AM

Yes, as the Swiss say: "we are neutral, we don't care who beats the Germans."

traveller1959 May 9th, 2008 06:03 AM

Do I scent envy, especially from our English friends?

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 06:09 AM

Well yes, you do.

However let's be honest - it's going to be pants without England getting knocked out on penalties in the quarter finals isn't it?

I am thinking of adopting a country - which one should I pick (obviously not Germany)?

annhig May 9th, 2008 06:39 AM

hi CW -

will any Spurs players be featured in this fussballfest?

if so, there's your answer.

regards, ann

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 06:44 AM

Modic is Croatian - but they knocked England out.

Malbranque is French - but i don't think he'll make he squad, and anyway no englishman can support the frogs.

So that doesn't help much.

altamiro May 9th, 2008 06:55 AM

>(obviously not Germany),

Come on CW, get over yourself! It is possible... I know... just think positive thoughts. Try something different & new!

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 07:01 AM

Go on then. Tell me something positive about Germany.

Hans May 9th, 2008 07:10 AM

Ah, we´re well known for our easy approach to life! It isn´t a coincidence that German expressions as "dolce far niente" or "savoir vivre" made their way in other languages.

And our football team might not be successful, but it´s always a pleasure to watch their attractive offensive football. Others might try to copy us (as the Brazilians who call themselves the Germans of South America) but they seldomn match our technical proficiency.

Let the Italians produce cars and the English cook, but Germans know how to enjoy life.

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 07:15 AM

Well that's the first point - first class ironists.

But that point is lost straight away for the mullets.

kenderina May 9th, 2008 07:19 AM

CW, you should pick Spain. You will suffer a lot but in the meantime you can enjoy some good football ;)
I think an UK TV channel said they were going to root for Spain, it was very funny, they even made a video with all hooligans and their beers in Spain's shirt.

PalenQ May 9th, 2008 07:25 AM

Go on then. Tell me something positive about Germany.

Beer, Wursts, beer, Wursts, beer

Hans May 9th, 2008 07:32 AM

Don´t forget bierwurst.

altamiro May 9th, 2008 07:36 AM

>Go on then. Tell me something positive about Germany.

Well, we can get up very early. It´s necessary to secure the sun loungers from Brits. But it´s only for their own good, so they don´t resemble a cooked lobster afterwards.

altamiro May 9th, 2008 07:37 AM

>Don´t forget bierwurst

But we draw the line at wurstbier.

PalenQ May 9th, 2008 07:41 AM

Worstbeer is in England IMO

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 08:08 AM

So far we've got lager, sausages and sun lounger pinching.

Those points are lost due to naked old people on the beach, lederhosen and freddie mercury type moustaches, and even some of the men have these.

Have you seen this advert?

Hans May 9th, 2008 08:35 AM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcguY...eature=related

A frog in lederhosen: I suppose the nightmare of countless Englishmen.

Lawchick May 9th, 2008 08:35 AM

My husband looks exactly like the German guy in the ad! - but he's Austrians.

The Austrians are like the Germans but completely lack the efficiency and possess a sense of humour ;)

My favourite German things are (in no particular order)

Wurst
Beer
Schlager
Karneval in Koeln (a mixture of the above 3)
Bread
Their bio health food shops
Heidelberg
Bodensee

I'm going on Sunday to Bad Waldsee.

traveller1959 May 9th, 2008 08:40 AM

>>Tell me something positive about Germany.<<

We can shoot penalties and we can save penalties.

And we can be very generous. We even send some of our best guys to England to help some London football clubs shooting & saving penalties.

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 08:41 AM

My husband looks exactly like the German guy in the ad! - but he's Austrians.>>>>

You say "husband" but really you mean "jailer and dungeon master" don't you?

CW - Knows about Austrians. If they're not keeping women in cellars, they're invading Poland.

traveller1959 May 9th, 2008 08:42 AM

BTW, aren't the Brits the real lager & sausage guys?

I heard that Brits eat sausages even for breakfast.

Sorry, not sausages, but emulgated high-fat innard rolls.

Lawchick May 9th, 2008 08:43 AM

He opens a vent now that the weather is hot so it's not so bad.

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 08:50 AM

Ah that's sweet. A caring Austrian. Don't tell the others.

BTW you do all know what i'm on about with this cellar nonsense don't you?

traveller1959 May 9th, 2008 08:51 AM

C_W, you beat us again.

"jailer and dungeon master"

Aren't a jail and a dungeon the main attractions of England's capital city?

logos999 May 9th, 2008 08:58 AM

> "jailer and dungeon master"
Austrian has the dungeon dads, but Germany has the freezer moms.

Dead in the freezer is a lot better than alife in the dungeon, isn't it. Altough I really liked the piggy farmer, and he was Bavrian. :D

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 09:01 AM

Aren't a jail and a dungeon the main attractions of England's capital city?>>>>

Assuming you mean the Tower - yes. but we put it out of use a while ago (in fact the last thing we did there was shoot some Germans. Maybe we could revisit it's original purpose?)

PalenQ May 9th, 2008 09:23 AM

He may mean the London Dungeon, which i recently read was the top tourist site/sight in London and i believe is in a former gaol.

And are not the von Windsors really German?

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 09:28 AM

Tussauds is London's most popular paid for attraction and Camden Market the most popular free one.

So iffy waxworks and sullen goths are what people come here for.

PalenQ May 9th, 2008 09:32 AM

thot the Camden market burnt down?

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 09:33 AM

Only a bit of it, sadly.

PalenQ May 9th, 2008 09:40 AM

I assume London Dungeon or Tussauds are not considered on the following list?

tate.jpgThe Evening Standard has a list of the top 20 visited tourist attractions in London according to a survey by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions. Tate Modern has taken over the number one spot from the British Museum with over 4.9million visitors last year.

The Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral are both in the top ten even though they charge admission, the rest are free. The most popular place visited in the whole of the UK was Blackpool Pleasure Beach with 5.7million visitors, but really, you don’t wanna go there, don’t get curious and just leave it to the Brits.

Here are the full 20 busiest London attractions.
1 Tate Modern
2 British Museum
3 National Gallery
4 Natural History Museum
5 Science Museum
6 V&A Museum
7 Tower of London
8 St Paul’s Cathedral
9 National Portrait Gallery
10 Tate Britain
11 National Maritime Museum
12 Kew Gardens
13 British Library
14 Westminster Abbey
15 London Zoo
16 Houses of Parliament
17 Imperial War Museum
18 Hampton Court
19 Cabinet War Rooms
20 Kensington Palace

Cholmondley_Warner May 9th, 2008 09:41 AM

I assume not as those are all publicly owned.
