England and Scotland: weather this September
 

Other posts seem to suggest that this summer in UK is unusually cold. We are planning to have a trip to England and Scotland mid-September, and I am wondering what kind of weather we should be prepared for. Is it really much colder in Scotland (especially Highlands) than in Southern England ? May be we should then skip Scotland altogether.

What's happening now has no effect on what's happening tomorrow, let alone a month's time.

Yesterday was sunny and warm, today it has rained all day and it's been cold.

I visited Scotland in the last week of September last year. The weather was mainly as I expected - mostly misty and drizzly, but a few sunny days too. I was fine with a light summer jacket on the cooler days, but there was one day that was downright cold.

If you don't mind dressing in layers, I don't think it'll be a problem. I can't imagine missing Scotland - it's such a magical and mystical place. The misty weather actually adds to the atmosphere.

You can't predict mid-September from now. Even when places have unusually hot summers or July or August, that does not mean it will be unusually hot in September.

from my experience, yes, it is colder in Scotland than Southern England.

Agree with teh above. I have burned on teh hills in September. I have also got very wet. I can't remember being snowed on.

The Met Office are practising seasonal forecasting, but they presently stop at the end of August.

My experience of Scottish weather in the first weeks of September is that it was like that joke: If you don't like this weather. Wait an hour. It'll change.

Maybe even more like half an hour.

I only got one day that was consistently anything (warm and humid). The rest of the days, it was alternately showers and sun, with amazing rainbows in between and during.

I wouldn't miss it. I'd love to go back.

In my experience the BBC cant predict the weather for this week let alone Sept hahahaha...the weather changes so fast in the UK. Dress ready for all weather with layers and you will be fine.

It may be a bit cooler but still not cold. I don't think it's cold in January, either! :) I would definitely not skip Scotland - I have to say I prefer Scotland to England. The scenery is absolutely stunning - you really should not miss it. The weather can put a damper on things if it is pouring rain, of course, but that can happen anywhere.

I've been to Scotland many times and have never taken anything more than a light rain jacket and long-sleeved shirts.

igorek: IMO you need to put more thought into this trip.

On another thread you mention leaving your luggage in London while traveling to Bath for 2 days and then flying from Bristol Scotland for a few days. You need to plan on layers and a certain amount of waterproofing - which means at least some decent sized luggage.

Things look like things are getting a bit complicated.

Why not consider doing Bath and Stonehenge as a day trip from London and then later you (and your luggage) can travel up to Scotland from London. You could either fly or take a train up.

Yes, there will be weather.

Likely Scotland will be cooler than southern England.

For anything else - check 3 days in advance - and hope the forecast isn't cloudy with some showers and sunny intervals.

BTW, decided to skip Stonehenge alltogether. Day trip from London to Bath is a good idea, but I wanted to spend at least 2 slow days in Bath.

I meant more thought into the routes that make the most sense. But now that you're maybe dropping Salisbury/Stonehenge, the luggage is no longer an issue.

You can take your bag to Bath and then on the train or plane up to Edinburgh. So all is well in the World :) (and you can have enough clothes to keep yourself warm)

travel2live2 : IMO it is cold today (August !!) - I am wearing sheepskin boots and eating hot soup to thaw me out :-(

igorek, to generalise wildly, this year it has been good in May & late July, bad in July & August so far - all over Britain. When it's 27 degrees C in London it's probably 21 here - that counts as good for both places. The next day it could be 16 in London & 14 here - like today. But there were a few days a week or two ago when Aberdeenshire was the hottest place in the UK ! As others have said you could get almost any weather anywhere in Britain.

Don't worry global warming is scheduled to kick in any minute.

It can't come soon enough for me !

Caroline, I will be in Edinburgh next month and I'm afraid I don't have room for my sheepskin boots:) so I hope it warms up a bit.

It is absolutely freezing in Edinburgh today - we actually turned on our heat last night!

There's no way to tell though - Monday was absolutely gorgeous and sunny all day, today it's on it's 2nd straight day of rain and really cold out.

It's all about layers and umbrellas.

I agree Caroline - if Edinburgh was just a bit warmer is would be absolutely perfect!

I'm afraid I turned our heating on last night too. But KMR is inStavanger, so maybe I just need a hot water bottle:)
