Looks like its about 1-2km we will take a cab given that we have 2 large suitcases.

How long are you staying in Dresden - if only a night I'd consider leaving heavy luggage in a train station locker and take the essentials on foot to the hotel - for large suitcases however you may have to use the manual left-luggage counter.

I always have suitcases with wheels and have literally walked miles effortlessly - wheels are essential to me if taking trains too - lots of longish walks in train stations - up and down stairs, etc.

Two large and presumably heavy suitcases will be a burden on trains - even heaving them into perhaps already overcrowded overhead luggage racks can be hard.

Pack light and use wheels!

We walked from the train station to the NH Dresden Altmarkt hotel with a couple of roll-aboards and our carry-ons. It was easier than we anticipated, as most of the way is a pedestrianized shopping zone. However, we're avid walkers... YMMV.

Take your suitcases and a taxi. I stayed across the square from the QF at the Apartmenthaus Altes Dresden and while most of the time I used mass transit or walked, for my arrival and departure, I used a cab.

I thought you were staying at Altmarkt maybe, but the QF is right on Neumarkt square - which is paved with large cobblestones. No fun to roll the large suitcases there, so taxi is probably the better choice.

There are two main train stations in Dresden - well two large stations but really one one Hauptbahnhof - but the other station on the other side of the river may be served by your train before you hit the Hbs - and I've found this station a lot less hectic than Hbf - could be easier to get taxis and may be just as close to your hotel (not sure where that is).
