Dresden Train Station

Is there a currency exchange at the Dresden Train Station? I don't use ATMs.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 03:37 AM

Yes there is.

Enjoy getting ripped off.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 03:39 AM

I forgot to tell you where to go. D'h!

Change your money at the ReiseBank.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 03:40 AM

*D'oh!

BillT Dec 11th, 2013 03:51 AM

I'm coming into Dresden by train and need to get some Euros so that I can pay the taxi to my hotel. So where is this Reisebank? I'm staying in the heart of old town.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 04:03 AM

It is in the train station "dome hall, (underneath staircase) as well as transverse platform".

the station isn't that big so you should be able to find it easily.

PalenQ Dec 11th, 2013 04:57 AM

You also could get some euros in Prague.

PalenQ Dec 11th, 2013 05:17 AM

International trains between countries with different currencies IME may also give change in the snack bar car in euros if you pay in Czech money so czech that out en route to Dresden as a possibility.

BillT Dec 11th, 2013 06:33 AM

I will be in Prague first before going to Dresden. I will get some Czech money at the airport in Prague- if I want to get Euros where would be the best place to do that?

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 06:35 AM

ATM is "best".

BillT Dec 11th, 2013 06:45 AM

As a rule I do not use ATMs, so where would be a good place in Prague to get some Euros?

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 07:00 AM

You might as well just go to the TRAVELEX at the airport and bend over. That's the simplest thing to do.

You might get a "better" conversion rate at a change bureau in the city but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Not that I recommend it but there are people wandering around Prague that will change money for you at better rates than the change bureau and banks, but you better know what the Euro bills are supposed to look like, ifyouknowwhatimean.

I don't use ATMs

Why not? If it is because you worry about theft and access to your account by someone else, there are precautions that can be taken that are transparent: 1. open an account in a credit union that holds only your travel money for that trip in its checking account. 2. Use only ATM attached to banks, preferably found in the entry way rather than street side.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 07:10 AM

He must have more money than sense. I wish I was wealthy enough that I didn't care about exchange rates and fees.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 07:13 AM

OP, I would reconsider your idea of walking around Europe with a fat stack of cash in your pocket.

BillT Dec 11th, 2013 07:20 AM

Lets keep the discussion polite! Can we dispense with the snide remarks and just provide some constructive advice on where to get the best exchange rate (without using an ATM).
Ok so it may not be the BEST rate- I can live with that- so what are my options. By the way I do not walk around with a fat stack of bills in my pocket.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 07:24 AM

Your choices are:

TRAVELEX
a "non-TRAVELEX" change bureau
Bank
Hotel (if you're lucky)
Random kind-hearted shopkeer
The dude in the trench coat who asks if you want to sell Dollars for Euro or Koruna

Of the things mentioned above, the dude will give you the best rate but you need to be smart and know the exchange rate and what Euro bills and Koruna are supposed to look/feel like.

BillT Dec 11th, 2013 07:34 AM

Thanks- I'll go with the bank option.

sparkchaser Dec 11th, 2013 07:38 AM

You could also "buy" korunas and Euros from your bank before you leave for your trip but I don't recommend that

Ingo Dec 11th, 2013 09:26 AM

The Reisebank is in the main hall in the main train station in Dresden, not to miss. I have seen long lines there at times, though.

Do you really want to get a taxi if your hotel is right in the old town? It's not that far, even walkable (5-10 minutes probably along pedestrian zones), and the tram service is very frequent.
