Good advice. I should start looking at fares now. Most of the accommodations I've seen so far had many openings, and you're also right about generous cancellation policies.

We spent 5 days in Sarlat plus a few days each in Montigac & Figeac. It certainly made for a marvellous trip overall. Our Sarlat accommodation was in Les Cordeliers B&B, which I have to rate as the best accommodation (hotel or B&B) I have ever had anywhere in France.

Trips from Montignac: Lascaux II, St-Leon-de-Vezere, Roc-St-Christophe, Les Eyzies, St-Cyprien. (On way there we visited Brantome, Bourdeilles & St-Jean-de-Cole).

From Sarlat: Beyanc, la Roque-Gageac, Domme, Les Milandes, Castelnaud, Cingle-de-Tremolat, Cadouin, Turenne, Rocamadour, Collonges-la-Rouge, Martel, Autoire, Carennac, Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne & much more.

From or en route to Figeac: St-Cirq-Lapopie, Cabrerets, Conques, Entraygues-sur-Truyere, Estaing, Espalion, and continuing south via St-Come-d'Olt, St-Eulalie-d'Olt & the Gorges du Tarn.

twoflower, thanks so much! Exactly the kind of information I need, and I will definitely check out your Sarlat B&B.

We went to this region last year.

Flew into Toulouse from JFK. We split our tip - Rocamadour area, not actually staying in the townand then Les Eyzies (same area as Sarlat). I think it was definitely the way to go - to split the trip. Yes, you can go to the sites in the Rocamadour area from Sarlat, but you'll spend a lot of time in the car. Better, IMO, is to split the time.

Here's where we stayed in the Rocamadour area.

If you decide on Les Cordeliers in Sarlat, don't put off booking too long. I was not able to book 5 nights in May, 2011 when I enquired the preceding November. They were full the last night. Probably because it was a Friday, the night before the Saturday market. However, we found the Wednesday market in Sarlat quite adequate.

For what it's worth, since you plan to stay 6 days, some of the rooms/suites at Villa des Consuls in Sarlat have kitchenettes. We found that rather convenient and enjoyed our stay there very much.

Enjoy your visit.

Thanks, Mimar, duly noted. Thanks, Leely2, I have to decide whether we want an apartment or a B&B. I do like having a kitchen...
