There may still be snow in these areas in March. Could still be skiing season.

Between the end of ski season and summer, a lot of places shut down, including restaurants and many of the cable cars.

They don’t resume for summer until mid or late June.

But in March I’m not sure what there is for people who’s not skiing.

As for staying in Bolzano, it’s pretty far for visiting for instance Alpe di Siusi. Google Maps indicates about 45 minutes by car. Probably longer by bus service. And it would be winding uphill to reach Ortisei, where the cable car to Alpe di Siusi is.

Lago di Brad’s is further east and about an hour and forty minutes by car.

BTW, these travel times are probably going to be greater if there is snow or winter weather.

Val di Gardena, which includes Ortisei and other villages, have bus service between each other and a lot of mountains you can visit.

But again you have to check what you can do in March if you don’t plan to ski. In the summer there are hiking trails but not sure if you can hike them in the winter.

Thats just one part of the Dolemites though. Lago di Braes is in another part.

first you have to find out if the activities you want to do like hiking are available in March. You may need snow shoes to hike.

for 4 days you want to pick one area. It would be difficult to visit Alpe di Siusi and then Lago di Braes unless you are willing to spend a lot of time on the road.

as for where to stay, I’ve never stayed in Bolzano so there may be mountains closer to Bolzano than Alpe di Siusi.

Did you ever take this trip? My husband & I are looking to go in mid Sept 2022 and are considering trying to do it without renting a car. Car rental prices are outrageous this year and we prefer train travel anyway. We do understand that we will have to travel by bus and may be limited on some areas but at this point are looking to focus are stay in the Ortisei area.

BRuff - We didn't go in the fall, and were booked and ready to go for Christmas 2021, but had to cancel when Austria went into lockdown (the trip included Austria, Germany and Italy).

We hope to rebook in the coming months.

I'm going to Cortina in early September.

And I'm paying through the nose for a car rental this year. But the plan is to visit Grado and Trieste after arriving in Venice, then Trieste to Cortina and back down to Venice. So car flexibility and possibly shorter travel times than relying on public transportation.

Also several day trips out of Cortina so didn't consider not having a car at all.
