No Greek bank has ever charged me for use of their ATMs. The only machines in Europe I have run across that charge a fee are private ATMs found in some UK petrol stations and convenience stores. This isn't as succinct an answer as NeoPatrick's, but confirms what he says.

Heimdall,
It is helpful to hear from someone who has dealt specifically with Greek banks/ATM's and not encountered any fees. Thank you for your response.

Very true, InMiami, but it is more a question of personal financial hygiene. If you are willing to lose a couple of dollars on currency exchange, you are generally also willing to walk into a restaurant without checking the prices, order items in a café with no idea what you will be charged, take things off the supermarket shelves without checking the cost, or walk up to the first sandwich stand without paying attention to the 3 or 4 competitors within spitting distance. There are many many people like this, and they are the ones who say "Europe is so expensive!"

Some of you make jetlag sound like a disease !! And as for dealing with an ATM, how much simpler could it be?Relax !! We are not total morons in europe. As for people rolling their eyes if one tries to speak their language, never happened to me in 30 years of international travel, and when I am not sure what to order in a restaurant I tell the waiter that I am not sure how to order and they have always been most helpful.

Realty! The USA dollar has lost value when used abroad. Internally inflation offsets the dollar's decrease in value. Banks are wonderful business machines. No physical inventory! The difference between a 1% fee and a 2% fee is 100%. Travellers...carry a pad and pencil; note each currency offering; the buy and sell of either Canadian or USA dollars. Airports and hotels offer the most expensive exchange rates. Worrying about exchange rates is not productive. Why not question hotel rates that have increased beyond local inflation numbers. Before you leave check the price of a cup of coffee at McDonalds or Starbucks...write it down. Do the same in London or Paris...
