Fire retardant seats, for one thing.

My friend said that virtually everyone survived the impact, but that smoke inhalation killed the rest. I think the airlines could make the inside of the plane safer from fire, but then that word "money" will creep in. Will people pay for extra safety? I don't know.

Oh Mary Fran, you mean you don't know about the free bar in coach on all the airlines? You just have to know the password...

Look, nobody can take issue with someone having a couple of stiff ones in the terminal to steady the nerves before boarding. And if you're lucky enough to be in the front of the bus, well you've just got to take advantage of having a drink before takeoff. And then, even in coach, when the cart comes around before dinner it's only common sense to pick up a couple of those little wine bottles just in case they don't come back right away. And when they come to pick up the trays, almost anyone would agree that it's a good time to have a little after dinner cocktail. And before everyone quits for the night, who wouldn't want to have a brandy or two to help you sleep. Before you know it, it's time for eyeopeners with breakfast, and nobody's going to question that.

But this drink, drink, drink, all through the flight? - why, that's just not right.

We used to enjoy the free drinks on overseas flights, would have a cocktail before dinner, wine with, then Bailey's after, and possibly a bloody Mary at breakfast time! But now that we'll have to pay $5 for each drink, we'll probably have to fly sober next month. Bummer!!!!!!!!!

Last thing I want is to land after a sleepless night (I never sleep on a plane) feeling woozy or hungover and have to take the usual 5-hour train ride plus hour drive I usually make. That said, I usually have a wine before dinner when they bring the cart around, and wine with dinner. Sometimes a third wine after dinner if I'm planning to watch the movie. And I drink loads and loads of water.
As a perennial worrywart in the skies, I do get concerned about people who get drunk on airplanes, not just loud, boorish behavior but the fact that in an emergency they could well compromise other people's safety.
I once flew home from France with a group of pretty well-known American chefs. They were the drunkest people I'v ever come across on a transatlantic flight and they scared the bejeesus out of me.

Just wine with my meals now, before when the airline was generous I used to have a cognac after meals.. not anymore..I refuse to pay 5 dollars for it...it is a matter of principle..

No, I don't think I can ever remember getting drunk on a flight. Not even drinking really.

It is still free on some of the overseas carriers, non?

Unless it changed in the past year British Airways didn't charge for cocktail, beer or wine in coach.
