do you expect linens changed daily?
So this is rather random, but I'm curious as to others' thoughts / expectations.
Lately I've read quite a few hotel reviews (for different places -- in UK, FR, BE) that included complaints that the linen (bed sheets and towels) were not changed daily. This seems to be quite upsetting for people, and taken as a sign of poor housekeeping / unclean hotel. I guess I'm used to so many US hotels having those little signs asking you to help them "conserve energy" by changing sheets every 2-3 days and changing towels only if you leave them on the floor. What do other people expect when traveling? Does it bother you if a hotel doesn't change linens daily? |
No, not bothered about linens, but I like clean towels.
|
Doesn't bother me at all - I don't change my sheets daily at home and prefer not to have someone in my room. A distant family member was traveling in Italy with his church, staying in convents....he had a fit because they weren't given clean towels everyday and he insisted on them. I hang my head..............
We all need to conserve............. |
Nope, doesnt bother me at all and I always choose to not have them changed if given the choice. I would if I stayed over 1 week, but anything less I am fine to keep the same sheets.
|
Same here. I see no reason to change linens every day - waste of energy and hotel staff time. I certainly don't change my sheets daily at home!
|
why would you expect to have linen changed every day? I don't know anyone who does that at home. weekly is enough for me. how dirty can you get sheets in a day???
as for towels, every 3 days or so should be fine. you can always ask for fresh ones if necessary. some people seem to have completely unrealistic expectations! |
I prefer that linens not be changed daily. Like so many others, I try to be green, and this is one more thing I can do to help the environment a bit.
|
Ditto - no reason to change linens daily! It definitely is better for the environment. Same with towels - as annhig says, every 3 days is about right (I don't change my towels daily at home, either!). This is a small price to pay for not adding even more to environmental problems.
|
Agree - every three or four days is fine. I often don't stay longer than that, in which case they never need to be changed.
|
If the linens need to be changed daily, try taking a bath!
|
Absolutely not. I'd rather the hotel staff stay out of the room for my entire stay if I can help it. I put up the do not disturb sign the whole time I'm there.
|
I don't change my sheets daily at home, so why would I in a hotel? what a waste of energy!
Same goes for towels. After all I am clean when I use them after a shower/bath and if I hang them up carefully to dry, they don't get musty. The only thing I like fresh daily is my face cloth and I travel with my own so that is not an issue. |
I don't feel it is necessary to change bed linens daily. What a waste.
But I like dry towels and would like them changed every two days. I also carry disposable wash cloths as I prefer clean ones every day. |
Do you change the sheets on your bed daily when you're at home? Why would you expect that in a hotel?
I use a towel for a week before in goes in the wash at home. They do dry out if you hang them on a rack. Most hotels I've stayed in lately ask you to put towels you want replaced in the tub ... to save on costs they don't replace the ones left hanging. Seems sane to me. |
For a complete discussion on this topic, I would recommend this Fodors topic.

There really should be a thread hall of fame.
|
Thanx all for the replies. As I mentioned, in the last couple weeks I've seen quite a few reviews dinging hotels for not changing linens daily. I was wondering if maybe I had lower standards than others.
@ Wekiva - I do the same thing. For a 3-night stay, I'll tell them when I check in that I don't need housekeeping to come by at all. @ Peter - Wow, that thread was ... wow. |
OMG not the travelling with bed sheets thread again!! :)
I love that they make the bed for me as it's one of my least favourite chores and that they tidy up the bathroom and give the vanity a wipe over. But no, I don't expect clean sheets or towels every day. Too wasteful for words. |
I'm happy for them to make up the bed, check there's enough loo roll and the like every day, but I don't need clean sheets or towels daily.
Most hotels in Europe have the sign up bout towels and the environment too. I don't change my bedsheets daily at home, nor do I use a clean towel daily so why would I want/expect that when on holiday. I certainly would never take my own linen with me and remake the bed with them! |
I don't expect a daily change but if I'm paying >$500/night for a hotel room I can see why I might.
Even in more expensive places in Europe I'm seeing the "conservation" signs as one would expect. |
