I wonder how fundamentalists react when they visit the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and walk into the Evolution Museum? I can't picture one called that in the States. How anyone could walk around that magnificent display and remain a believer in Creationism -------

To answer the OP, I am an American and a Catholic and accept evolutionary theory as science. I attended both public and Catholic school and learned about evolution in both.

I studied in England, and visited Scotland. Very few of my classmates were religious at all, or were very private about it. I suspect you were as astonished by this American's vehemence and stridency almost as much as his statement.

While the Creationists have always been a part of the American population, I do believe their intensity of emotion has reached more of a "fever pitch" and I attribute that to the increased polarization of politics in our country. My husband and I occasionally run across them.

Going back to the original point.....I think the telling part of the anecdote is that the American

a) found it necessary to say something to the guide

b) that in his mind, religion, in this case Presbyterianism, was equated with the idea that evolution was just plain wrong . So,all Christians ought to believe this?

c) that the government of Scotland should not allow evolution to be displayed, or discussed in a public institution like a museum.

I'm afraid to voice my strong opinion here at the risk of being labelled anti - American- but I doubt these ideas or prejudices are so obvious in ANY other country.

Years ago I worked in the US for a bit for a small Australian educational publisher. I have also studied there (briefly) , toured with teachers, and in another job worked for a not- for profit turning print books (including science books) into digital formats for the Blind, so I've had some exposure to teachers and educators in every American state.

Part of my job was discussing curriculum standards, and researching and writing the text for teaching aids. Not one single teacher or teaching authority in Australia, the UK, NZ, South Africa, the South Pacific or South America where these aids were being marketed, ever challenged the idea that the teaching of evolution was a reasonable, expected and usual thing to do.Guess where ALL the objections came from?

Initially the company was shocked at the vocal often hysterical reaction from educators and individual teachers, and this was NOT just in the Southern States, or the Bible belt. Objections came about such benign statements as "some of the oldest rocks in the world are found in Australia"...because this was proof that creationism was not relevant in those aids.

For those of you who continue to test yourselves re creationism or evolution. I very strongly recommend the Danish Film, "Adam's Apples"

The film from 2006 or 2007 has a few layers and may appeal to proponents of both. Has tests of faith, Job, incest, neo-nazism, terrorism, holocaust, Down syndrome and a different type of humour as well.

If you wish to get away from the unending arguments above, the film to watch, with a similar date is,
"Survive Style 5+" A Japanese film with no implications or relations to religion, divinity, man's origins, sin, forgiveness, testing, philosophy, ethics, morals......
Enjoy the colours the sets, the characters, the absurdity and do not think much about anything while and after watching it. It will still leave its mark on you.

That's one of the more amusing uses of the word "documents."

It should be noted that because someone says he doesn't believe in evolution, that doesn't necessarily indicate that the person believes in some religious alternative to evolution.

There are many people who are lukewarm about religion and who don't believe in the **scientific** concept of evolution. They probably believe that God created people (a not-so-"out-there" concept). I suspect that many of those people really haven't bothered to study what true evolution theory involves -- nor should they if they don't want to -- and they're making their judgment based on a smattering of knowledge.
