I don't know the difference, but my kids swear by Coke Light in France. Won't touch the US stuff but start ordering it right away as soon as we hit CDG.

Chacun a son gout!

I also think Coke Light tastes a lot different that the diet Coke in the states. I don't mind the taste but like the above poster I tend to get the Fants Orange when in Europe.
It is funny how foods taste completely different in other countries. Has anyone tasted a Snickers in Europe? Nothing like the ones in the states.
I love the vanilla and banana milk in Germany though. Yum!
Give me a bag of Chio chips anytime and I'm good to go.

You quite often get Coke Light instead of UK Diet Coke (or European Coca Cola) in fast food/kiosk type places in the uk- I suppose it is sometimes just cheaper for them to get it imported from other EU countries than from the official UK distributors. I'd be suprised to see it in a restaurant though.

If I have to drink a soft drink (and I don't very often), the only Coke Light or Diet Coke I can stomach is one that is in a glass half full of Jack Daniels.

Except I am a sucker for Stewart's Diet Orange 'n Cream. It's like a 50/50 bar in a glass. They also have a great Diet Root Beer.

The reason I don't drink regular soft drinks is that if I'm going to put a million calories and a bunch of sugar into my body, it's going to be a really good dessert.

No I wasn't whining....just curious as to what is going on. Don't understand why so many stores seem to be carrying Coke Light in London when it is not brewed there and have to import it from France, Germany, Spain etc. Transporting it over these distances in this heat cannot be good for the taste, that's for sure.

Incidentally, to me at least, diet coke as brewed in the UK tastes identical to Diet Coke brewed in the US. I notice also that in London, many stores are carrying diet coke vanilla (as opposed to diet vanilla coke as it is called in the US)...it is quite good.

Supposedly at one time, there was a Diet Coke with Lemon product being distributed. Anyone ever have it, and does it still exist?

Fletcher921 Aug 22nd, 2003 04:59 AM

Coke Light is also sold what we receive when we travel in Mexico. It tastes like the old fashioned TAB before the re-invented that soda 20 years ago. Babs

Brimham - Diet Coke w/Lemon, Cherry, and Vanilla, respectively, are available in 2 liter bottles at my local grocery store.

BrimhamRocks; coke light with lemon has only recently been introduced in Belgium, where I live, and seems quite popular.

Don't forget the great Scottish drink Irnbru (sp). The orange cream soda staple of Scotland. Wish they had that drink in MS.

For those of you in the U.S. who like a certain brand of foreign soft drink, you might try www.popsoda.com and see if they distribute it in the U.S.

I still remember the first time I saw this in at a little take-away place in Paris. I have a can of it at home and have had a lot of fun with it at parties.

My favorite brand of European soda...

I normally have a diet coke each morning. My last trip to France was for just 5 days and I took 4 cans of diet coke along.

Can't stand the local version, and I am not likly to develope that taste in a few days.

I imagine folks from Europe feel the same way when they try are diet coke in the US.

capo, once you are used to the diet drinks, the sugered stuff tastes bad.

A while back, I was out of diet coke at home and wanted a mixed drink. I had some coke on hand for friends and made a burbon and coke instead of burbon and diet coke.

After a couple of sips, I dumped the mixed drink down the drain.

Diet Coke (and Diet Pepsi) has been proven to cause brain cancer. Why would you want that crap in your body? In Italy it is much better and more refreshing to drink Pellegrino Lemon Soda or Orangina.

xyz123 Aug 23rd, 2003 02:03 AM

That is bs...there is not one iota of evidence that the artificial sweeteners used in Diet Coke and/or Diet Pepsi have any harmful effects whatsoever so stop putting falsehoods on this site.

Gothampc Aug 23rd, 2003 05:59 AM

Actually Sweet & Low does carry a health warning that it causes cancer in laboratory animals. But then again your deoderant has the possibility of causing Alzheimer's. We live in a dangerous world.

"Actually Sweet & Low does carry a health warning that it causes cancer in laboratory animals."

Actually, I believe, since December of 2000, they have not had to put any warning on their product because there is no proof it causes cancer.

Ok....curiosity is up....I am heading to London in 2 weeks...and the first thing I will want to try is one of those Diet Light Cokes....

Re: capo, once you are used to the diet drinks, the sugered stuff tastes bad.

Keith, I wouldn't deny that's a possibility. In the same vein, after I quit putting salt on food many years ago, if I now were to put salt on food, it would taste far too salty.

Somehow, though, I don't see that happening with diet drinks. If it does, however, I'll remember you. :)

Gothampc Aug 23rd, 2003 11:45 AM

Capo, remember me too! I used to be a sugared Coke fanatic. And then I hit 30 and my metabolism fell asleep. I switched to diet Coke which I hated. But I kept drinking it and now when I switch back to the sugared stuff I can't stand it.
