DEATH TO GOOFY!

Now they've got it rigged so that pressing the "Close" button launches their odious in-your-face ad for theme park dreck, and you have to wait before you get your cursor back.

I wonder if the rapacious, greedy capitalists at Disney have factored in people like me who find this advertising technique so repellent that we deliberately shift their offerings down about six positions on the "where to vacation" scale.

<b><font color="blue">HOW TO KILL GOOFY:</font>
as soon as the stupid animation appears, hit the &quot;End&quot; key to scroll it off the page. Then hit &quot;Home&quot; to pop back to the top <i>sans</i> the despicable importuning.</b>

Neopolitan Apr 16th, 2006 08:31 AM

I'm I the only one here who has no idea in the world what Robespierre is talking about? What Goofy? I saw another post about Dumbo. I'm kind of jealous as I've never seen either.

degas Apr 16th, 2006 08:33 AM

Yeah, what is he talking about? A pop up? Do people still get those things?

cigalechanta Apr 16th, 2006 08:36 AM

I don't see them? But others have been complaining on News and announcements.

Sher Apr 16th, 2006 08:39 AM

A huge Goofy add unfurls over the posts.

Hate it. But I guess it is a way for them to get revenue.

Neopolitan Apr 16th, 2006 08:40 AM

Must be one of my pop up blockers or Firefox usage that eliminates him for me.

sandi_travelnut Apr 16th, 2006 08:44 AM

I just got it when I hit reply to this message.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 08:47 AM

Neo, Firefox &quot;Block Popup Windows&quot; doesn't prevent it. What else are you running?

Operaman Apr 16th, 2006 08:48 AM

Using the Firefox browser--safer by far than IE--blocks this ad. Firefox also has a free plugin called Adblock that further enhances blocking of all those annoying ads.

Intrepid1 Apr 16th, 2006 08:48 AM

Perhaps those Disney characters are attracted to folks who like to post in color.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 08:49 AM

Oh. I just figured it out. I uninstalled Macromedia Flash and it stopped.

Operaman Apr 16th, 2006 08:54 AM

Robespierre; Just go to the Firefox homepage and then to the plugins section. Download Adblock and that should take acre of your problem.

Scarlett Apr 16th, 2006 08:56 AM

Is this because you got an empty Easter Basket? That should be the Easter Bunny, not Goofy.

wombat7 Apr 16th, 2006 09:00 AM

Sorry - haven't a clue what you mean - yet to see a Goofy - unless you are referring to some of the recent posts!

wombat7 Apr 16th, 2006 09:03 AM

A further thought - could it be that the pop-up is just aimed at those accessing through US IPs?

JandaO Apr 16th, 2006 09:05 AM

I get the darn thing sometimes and want to blast it into eternity. I HATE all ads.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 09:10 AM

Adblock doesn't stop it in my configuration. Killing Flash did.

i_am_kane Apr 16th, 2006 09:26 AM

Goofy with the flaming fry pan was getting me too. I followed what Robespierre did and uninstalled Macromedia Flash.

Time will tell...

monicapileggi Apr 16th, 2006 09:33 AM

Yes, Goofy pops up once in a while for me. I just scroll to the bottom, then back up and he's gone.

Monica ((F))

Underhill Apr 16th, 2006 09:53 AM

I have a pop-up blocker, but it doesn't work on Goofy.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 10:24 AM

<font color=teal><b>HOW TO MAKE GOOFY NOT APPEAR</b></font>

It is important to do these steps in order (as I discovered after lots of screwing around with it.) There's probably a way to do this with IE, but I didn't research that.

If you don't have Firefox 1.5.0.2, download and install it from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Then go to https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/10/ and click &quot;Install Now for Windows&quot;

If you get a message about &quot;Software installation is disabled&quot; in the information bar above your browser window, type <b>about:settings</b> in the Address bar and press Enter. Scroll down to xpinstall.enabled, right click, and select &quot;toggle&quot;. Then install again.

Next, go to https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1136/ and click &quot;Install Now for Windows&quot;

Close Firefox and launch it again. No goofs should appear, ever again. Nor any of that crap that doubleclick.net spews all over your pages, either.

:s

wliwl Apr 16th, 2006 11:45 AM

OK I did all that stuff. I hope it works! Bye Bye Goofy.

janisj Apr 16th, 2006 12:06 PM

OK - whenever I see these types of threads I wonder what I'm missing.

I'm on an old mac, don't have any pop up blockers, and have never seen any of these things people keep complaining about . . . . .

Scarlett Apr 16th, 2006 12:08 PM

janis, me too. I am on a young Mac and never a sight of Goofy or Dopey or Sleepy...sigh..we miss all the fun, don't we? :D

mariacallas Apr 16th, 2006 12:29 PM

That thing's driving me freakin' nuts.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 12:59 PM

Moral: if you want to pay twice as much for the same computing power, you don't have to install popup blockers.

I think I'll stick with my way.

AnthonyGA Apr 16th, 2006 01:19 PM

Additional moral: Your Web surfing will be a lot safer and less irritating if you turn off or disable Flash animations in your browser and on your system. I have it completely deinstalled from my system, and I've never regretted that. Nothing in a Flash animation has ever been important enough for me to regret missing it, and I like the added security, performance, and tranquility of not having any trace of Flash on the system.

bellastarr Apr 16th, 2006 01:21 PM

Who knows, I work on an oldish MAC at home, and a high end, new MAC at work (where I have Firefox), but still get Goofy. Too bad but we're not allowed to download any plug ins or software that would block it.

AnthonyGA Apr 16th, 2006 01:27 PM

Flash itself is a plug-in; you should be able to deinstall it.

Carrybean Apr 16th, 2006 01:33 PM

I'm on an HP Pavilion &amp; use IE &amp; I've never seen it but I'm still wondering if the Google toolbar I use with their pop-up blocker stops it.

wliwl Apr 16th, 2006 01:35 PM

No the google toolbar does not stop it. I have the toolbar and the things was up all the time.

Operaman Apr 16th, 2006 02:04 PM

Robespierre; Also found a Flash blocker for Firefox: http://flashblock.mozdev.org/installation1.html
This works really well!

nancicita Apr 16th, 2006 04:04 PM

Thanks Robespierre! I hate the Goofy that pops up too. It raids my entire browser!
(I use firefox)

hopscotch Apr 16th, 2006 04:19 PM

Robespierre, I love it that you are fighting back on this. I have never seen the alleged Goofy (me on Firefox) but I trust that you have given us an accurate report. What really amuses me is that you put in the html code so your title is red. It reminds me that last week I saw &quot;High Plains Drifter&quot; for the umpteenth time! You are obviously not amused, and I am in complete agreement with you.

bob_brown Apr 16th, 2006 04:40 PM

Have you ever noticed how IE pushes that Flash gadget? I quit using IE because of it.

Must be some kind of a conspiracy going on. At any rate, Firefox seems superior in many respects. I use it most all of the time.

At any rate, I don't see those goofy pictures.

sheila Apr 17th, 2006 12:30 AM

See, it's all different. I gave up on Firefox sometime agao because it was incompatible with so many other things I was using (I didn't find it that much better than IE anyway). So I'm using IE; I have Flash installed and I have a google toolbar. Goofy has yet to appear.

But if anyone can rid of that map of the Tetons that keeps obscuring eth reply box, I'd be most grateful.

Neopolitan Apr 17th, 2006 05:35 AM

I switched to Firefox as a result of comments here (among them how to get rid of similar advertising). The only problem I encounter is that I'm often running several programs at once on Firefox and fairly often I'll suddenly get a message &quot;Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to shut down&quot;. Immediately all my sites and what I was doing are gone. I only assume that it was doing that to protect me from something. Otherwise I do like it better than IE.

Robespierre Apr 17th, 2006 05:46 AM

I've run Firefox from its inception, and never seen it shut down like that (and I have many browsers open at once, too).

I'd guess you probably have a crufty system, and need to clean house.

AnthonyGA Apr 17th, 2006 11:42 AM

Neopolitan, I've almost never experienced any type of crash on Firefox. What operating system are you running? Constant crashes imply that there's something else wrong in the system unless you're running a very exotic OS.

I moved to Firefox because I wanted something that would not download and run &quot;active&quot; (read: virus-laden) content, and would not insist on warning me that I was not getting the &quot;full experience&quot; of every page I visited if I elected to turn active content off (IE does this incessantly if you try to turn things off for security). I use Firefox more or less exclusively these days. Best of all, I can use it without even having Flash installed on the system.

Mucky Apr 17th, 2006 12:02 PM

How do I get Goofy? I have never seen it !
I want to get it just so I can try Robs method and get rid of it.
