DEATH TO GOOFY!

Now they've got it rigged so that pressing the "Close" button launches their odious in-your-face ad for theme park dreck, and you have to wait before you get your cursor back.

I wonder if the rapacious, greedy capitalists at Disney have factored in people like me who find this advertising technique so repellent that we deliberately shift their offerings down about six positions on the "where to vacation" scale.

HOW TO KILL GOOFY:
as soon as the stupid animation appears, hit the "End" key to scroll it off the page. Then hit "Home" to pop back to the top sans the despicable importuning.

Neopolitan Apr 16th, 2006 08:31 AM

I'm I the only one here who has no idea in the world what Robespierre is talking about? What Goofy? I saw another post about Dumbo. I'm kind of jealous as I've never seen either.

degas Apr 16th, 2006 08:33 AM

Yeah, what is he talking about? A pop up? Do people still get those things?

cigalechanta Apr 16th, 2006 08:36 AM

I don't see them? But others have been complaining on News and announcements.

Sher Apr 16th, 2006 08:39 AM

A huge Goofy add unfurls over the posts.

Hate it. But I guess it is a way for them to get revenue.

Neopolitan Apr 16th, 2006 08:40 AM

Must be one of my pop up blockers or Firefox usage that eliminates him for me.

sandi_travelnut Apr 16th, 2006 08:44 AM

I just got it when I hit reply to this message.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 08:47 AM

Neo, Firefox "Block Popup Windows" doesn't prevent it. What else are you running?

Operaman Apr 16th, 2006 08:48 AM

Using the Firefox browser--safer by far than IE--blocks this ad. Firefox also has a free plugin called Adblock that further enhances blocking of all those annoying ads.

Intrepid1 Apr 16th, 2006 08:48 AM

Perhaps those Disney characters are attracted to folks who like to post in color.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 08:49 AM

Oh. I just figured it out. I uninstalled Macromedia Flash and it stopped.

Operaman Apr 16th, 2006 08:54 AM

Robespierre; Just go to the Firefox homepage and then to the plugins section. Download Adblock and that should take acre of your problem.

Scarlett Apr 16th, 2006 08:56 AM

Is this because you got an empty Easter Basket? That should be the Easter Bunny, not Goofy.

wombat7 Apr 16th, 2006 09:00 AM

Sorry - haven't a clue what you mean - yet to see a Goofy - unless you are referring to some of the recent posts!

wombat7 Apr 16th, 2006 09:03 AM

A further thought - could it be that the pop-up is just aimed at those accessing through US IPs?

JandaO Apr 16th, 2006 09:05 AM

I get the darn thing sometimes and want to blast it into eternity. I HATE all ads.

Robespierre Apr 16th, 2006 09:10 AM

Adblock doesn't stop it in my configuration. Killing Flash did.

i_am_kane Apr 16th, 2006 09:26 AM

Goofy with the flaming fry pan was getting me too. I followed what Robespierre did and uninstalled Macromedia Flash.

Time will tell...

monicapileggi Apr 16th, 2006 09:33 AM

Yes, Goofy pops up once in a while for me. I just scroll to the bottom, then back up and he's gone.

I have a pop-up blocker, but it doesn't work on Goofy.
