DANGER! Addiction potential to Fodors.com

I have only recently, maybe in the past couple weeks, been finger dancing this web site. What a feeling to get a response from a posting (as the locals like to call it). Perhaps being the youngest of five, I'm always amazed and gratified that someone would take the time to consider my questions.
The response from the you guys, the quality and care of your responses, is something I never would have dreamed of. But now, I find that every day I need my Fodor's fix. I wrestle with feeling truly connected to the masses and inspired by travel dialogue to...Oh my god....am I addicted? Can you relate?

terry Apr 18th, 2000 05:50 PM

I can truly relate!! I discovered this web site about two months ago, as I began planning our family's trip to London and Paris for this June. It all began with a visit to Chris' hosted forum on Paris. Before this, I had no internet experience. I had never even sent an e-mail. Through the wonderful information I have gathered from this forum, I have done all of my London - Paris trip planning. This has truly been a life changing experience for me. I am addicted! I visit this site three times a day and always find new jewels of information. Thanks to everyone who keeps this forum so interesting and helpful.

I Terry, take thee Anne . . .

This forum is a blast, isn't it?

s.fowler Apr 18th, 2000 06:21 PM

Only three times a day??
I think I made my first post here in spring 1997. Since then I have laughed, learned and traveled, both in reality and here. This remains the only forum I fequent on the web. It *is* a special group of very knowledgeable, generous people. And come back Tony! We miss you too :)

I totally agree, this Forum has become a vital part of my day - especially living in rural Australia it is such a wonderful insight into the world of travel and a never-ending (I Hope) source of information.

I thank all of you for contributing to Fodors.com. In a way no different than going to the library. In responding to others I have "relived" portions of my travels. And, in seeing answers to my questions the excitement of an upcoming trip increases. Imagine getting a posting from someone who just returned from seeing the the temples at Luxor, Egypt with a tip on attire. Addiction maybe, but certainly adds a different element than playing a game of solitare or slingo (no shot intended) when I need a break.

ilisa Apr 19th, 2000 04:28 AM

Three times a day is no addiction. Wait until you check in close to 10 times a day, like me. Then you are addicted. I truly feel like I know the people on these forums. However, I suppose there are worse things in life to be addicted to.

I love this site!! I live vicariously thru all the trip reports by fellow fodorites! I now use the internet exclusivly for planning my trips. The people in Fodors have a passion for travel and better yet...a willingness to share what they have experienced with strangers!! I would like to thank all the Posters for helping me set my next trip (Austria). I want to give a special "Shout-out" to my main man "Bob Little", for kindly giving out "free information", even though he has his own
travel service business!! I have a few times, posted my own Fodor tips whenever I feel I can help, and you can be sure that I will give y'all a recap of my Austrian Adventure when I return!
JOHN

Yep...addicted I am! (as much as I despise the word.) I too was turned on about 2 months ago and found questions which were lurking in my mind, already asked many times over. Except about how and what to prepare for when travelling wiht two teens. I get my question all formulated, hit the site and BAM! There it is.....Wow, what a place! I am already up to 10-15 times a day, hit the Refresh button several times if only we could post pictures too!
Thanks everyone, I will report back about the teen thing. We will be driving from Amsterdam to Paris to Burgundy to Provence to LIguria to Verona then through Germany back to Holland. It will be grand!
Kay

Bob Brown Apr 19th, 2000 05:21 AM

It may be addictive, but no one gets arrested for driving under the influence of Fodors.

Carol Apr 19th, 2000 06:01 AM

My name is Carol and I too am a Fodors.com addict. I freely confess to visiting at least 3x daily--breakfast, lunch and dinner.

emily Apr 19th, 2000 06:21 AM

I confess, I am a fodors addict! Is there a 12 step program out there?
ilisa Apr 19th, 2000 06:32 AM

A 12 step program? This is one addiction I don't want to overcome.

Anne Apr 19th, 2000 06:36 AM

The only side effects I've encountered are one burnt pot, longer layers of dust accumulation in the house and competing with everyone else in the house for computer time. Now I have a clock in the room.

s.fowler Apr 19th, 2000 06:53 AM

The "program" is a 12 DAY trip that includes every place mentioned on this site! [Is 10 seconds enough to get from Rome to Venice?]

Austin Apr 19th, 2000 08:21 AM
I am a new addict (three days) and have already posted two or three replies
This site is unlike the others---there are no overwhelming personalities and condescending know it alls who jump on every question Fodors Forum is now in my Favorites file replacing an unmentionable european travel site that has all those annoying things
As a former travel writer I shall try to help out from time to time with useful--and misspelled==information as well as questions of my own

Thanks!!!!!

Bob Brown Apr 19th, 2000 08:27 AM

No overwhelming types on this board?
Hmm. No know it alls? HMM
I will say this, that most of the "know it alls" on this forum will soon learn that there a veteran posters who fit into the category of "knows more than a know it all".
Also, some of us, those who don't use phony addresses, have gotten private blasts from folks who take offense or otherwise object to what we write.
Some of the attacks were intended to maim and to destroy a person as an individual! Email me directly and I will tell you a few.
phony Apr 19th, 2000 09:48 AM

Bob Brown--maybe those of us who use phony addresses have good reason to do so--nothing so trivial as avoiding negative feedback.

Neal Sanders Apr 19th, 2000 11:28 AM

Negative feedback? I was corrected by an alert reader on a note I posted on the Grand Canyon who said that, since I didn't know the difference between a burro and a mule, I must surely be related to the hind end of one of the parents of the latter. If you can't take that kind of ribbing, trade in your internet connection for something that can't bite back.

Anne, this space is occupied by an ever-changing group that continually astonishes me with their breadth of knowledge, sense of humor, and dedication to ensuring that total strangers have an enjoyable time where ever they are traveling. I have been contributing to this forum for over three years and can't imagine a day without a fix. Like Sally Fowler, this is the lone non-business site on my list of bookmarks. It is a uniquely civilized group; citizenship is entirely voluntary.

P.S.: stick around until summer. Maybe someone will start a new limerick contest.

Sheila Apr 19th, 2000 11:37 AM

I'm not addicted. I can stop anytime I like. I just enjoy it. I don't believe it gives you cancer or rots your brain (but it's hell on the bank balance)

Everything in moderation. What? You're taking away my computer..? NOoooooo!!
