Great trip report!! !I am planning to to go to croatia in Sept /2007. Should I stay in Dubronik the whole time or should I travel to other areas like Brac. I heard that Hvar was a party island and that's not what I want on vacation. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Denise

Hi Jana:

Our studio had lavender purple on some of the walls - what a suprise on Hvar!

I laughed when "Grandma" showed us into our room and took us into the bathroom. It had cleaning products stacked next to the shower and I thought maybe they were there to give the IMPRESSION the bathroom was clean! There was a big bucket and a string mop behind the bathroom door which she showed me should be used if I got water on the floor during my shower. Of course with no door or shower curtin, I did get a bit of water on the floor but I did not mop it up - HAH!

Were the great-grandparents (they had come down from their village in the hills for the summer) still there when you arrived? I loved that great grandma, she had a bandaged ankle, an attitude and a cane she was not afraid to shake at Suzanna's little daughter if she was running around and acting up or squeezing her kitten too hard. That kitten business drove me crazy too, I just wanted to get the kitten out of her hands but she would not let me TOUCH it.

Anyway, it was a great location and a fun experience (mostly) to stay with 4 generations of the family. The grounds and plants were pretty too, didn't you think? If they fixed/updated a few things around the place they would have a little goldmine. We were was only charged $40 euro a night - it was cheap!

HappyCheesehad - Yes, the great grandparents were still there! That's a very good description too. And I agree, the location was pretty great. Quiet at night but a 5 minute walk to the action.

Den4001 - As much as I would love to spend my whole vacation in Dubrovnik, unless you only have 4 or 5 days I would venture out to the islands as well. I definately didn't think Hvar was a party place in September but I think August is a very different story. Hvar town is very pretty and if you like what you read about it, then you'll be fine in September. But there are plenty of other islands to try out too! Have fun planning.

Nukesafe - Sorry about the long link. I don't know how to use tinyurl - do I need to download something to use it? Thanks.

Nukesafe - ignore my last question. Just Googled it and am all sorted out. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks, a very nice and informative report. I was in Dubrovnik about a week before you, passing through for a few days on my way from Bosnia to Montenegro. I agree with you that the historic area is WAY TOO CROWDED during the days; unlike you, I spent the afternoon at the bars overlooking the Adriatic just outside the city walls where I read and drank great local beer.

Great trip report! Sorry to learn that you were in Hvar during the rain. Not to rub it in, but we showed up a week later and the skies were sunny beautiful the whole time. The locals were talking about the unusual rain you experienced.

Glad to know you liked Yaksa! It was one of our two favorite Croatian restaurants. I'll also include details about it in my upcoming trip report.

MikeBuckley - glad to hear you found Yaksa too! I really loved that restaurant. I'm not surprised to hear that you had good weather the week after we did. It definately looked a system that was rolling through and our last day in Croatia was gorgeous. We were just unlucky!

Looking forward to your trip report.
