Critique my Amalfi Coast Itinerary?
Day 1: Arrive Naples. Transfer to Capri
Day 2: Capri Day 3: Capri Day 4: Capri Day 5: Travel to Positano Day 6: Positano Day 7: Positano Day 8: Positano Day 9: Travel to Sorrento Day 10: Sorrento Day 11: Sorrento Day 12: Sorrento Day 13: Depart Naples Are we overdoing it in Capri (i.e. 4 nights too long)? Basically, we love to just hang-out, stroll around, eat and relax. Would like to do all the usual excursions (Pompeii, Cimbrone Gardens, etc) but really happy to just chill out. I know this is a popular topic on this board and I have been doing a lot of reading. Just looking for some reassurance from the experts before I start confirming hotels! Thank you |
Hi endlessummer-
I've been to this area many times and I'm sorry not to give more detailed responses, but when I glanced at your list, somehow I started humming "Tarantella" music with your list as the lyrics! lol, so that must mean you have the right plan in place! I think that because you are giving enough time to each location, and want to have a relaxed pace, you are sure to have a wonderful visit! don't worry! |
I agree with Bellastar. Your itinerary sounds wonderful. I don't think 4 nights in Capri is too much if you like to lounge and relax. Capri is perfect for that and especially lovely at night when the day trippers have left.
Have a wonderful time! What hotels are you staying at? |
With two weeks there, you ought to be able to include a daytrip to Pompeii and/or Mt Vesuvius and/or Paestum...

Hi E,
>... we love to just hang-out, stroll around, eat and relax.< Looks good to me. ((I)) |
Thanks guys - i'm a bit nervous that i might be spending TOO long on the AC but I guess I won't know until I try it! This is our first trip to Italy together (except for Venice but that was cold and rainy in Feb) so this is very exciting. Hotel wise, we are looking at La Minerva in Capri, Eden Roc in Positano and La Minervetta in Sorrento. We like smallish hotels. I was looking at Le Scale in Anacapri but I'm not sure I can justify the cost to my husband since I imagine we'll be spending a lot of time outside of the hotel. I know La Minerva doesn't have a pool - do you think this is necessary in Capri?

Do yourself a favor and go to www.onelittleworld.com and find their Campania trip report and pics---you will love it.
|
If you get too bored in Capri, hop a boat to nearby Ischia, which to me was every bit as fascinating as Capri - or take the hydrofoil to Naples for the day.

If your handle refers to the classic surfing/travel movie, there was a nice article about its 40th anniversay over at World Hum.

Thanks everyone!
bobthenavigator - I didn't realise you were so famous! I just looked at YOUR website. I'm going to read it at lenght. Thanks! I am totally salivating and furiously printing off 'onelittleworlds' trip report - it looks amazing! Pausanias - well spotted and thanks for that! But it's not really about me. My husband is a bit of an Aussie surf dude. I'm just the girl who tags along and is always in pursuit of the Endless Summer. Our dream is to live in Margaret River, Western Australia one day... |
Grazie !
That is my son and family--she takes most of the pics. They will be here in a week. |
I guess it comes down to your personal preference re hotel w/pool in Capri. Capri is boiling hot in the summer months, but you can certainly swim down at the beach or off the side of a boat to cool off.
|
Just remember, that the beaches in Capri are rocky. It will be broiling hot when you go, and a pool might come in handy. There probably would be some exquisite people watching at pool in Capri.

Itinerary looks great.
You will love the AC and given what you like to do, none of your nights in any of your choices are too long. I wish we had more time on the AC this past May especially in Capri, which I am glad to see you are staying on rather than a day trip. When you visit Positano, do make day trips to Ravello ( for the gardens especially and ceramics) and Amalfi ( I liked the town and Duomo). And even the little towns along the way too. Take some hikes, purchase the Sunflower Guide to the Amalfi Coast for some wonderful walks. And just enjoy!! Drink a ton of Limoncello!! |
Thanks Tripgirl - we are huge fans of Santorini which I think has a lot in common with Capri - i.e. loads of daytrippers who don't get to experience the real island and then there are those of us left behind at night who do! I can't wait to just go walking and see all the wonderful vistas.
Thank you for the tips on visiting the rest of Amalfi. I am soooo giddy with excitement and am really enjoying planning this trip. As for Limoncello, would you believe that Australia only started producing their own about 4 years ago? I'm looking forward to stocking up on the Italian variety!! btw, I have emailed all my hotels and haven't heard back yet. Is this sort of delay normal for Italy? I'm sure it is but just want to check. |
We stayed at Villa Gabrisa in Positano and it was the best hotel of our entire trip. Very cheap and extremely extremely spacious (we had two bedrooms). If you haven't booked yet, I STRONGLY reccommend this hotel.
|
Sounds good to me. Be sure to visit "La Fontelina" for lunch/swim in Capri (hike down and back up steep hill, but worth it, if you don't mind the exercise.)
|
Positano restaurant: on the sea at "Bucca di Baco." One of the best pastas with seafood I have ever had. I seriously wanted to lick the plate! It is all the way at the bottom of the stairs and then to the left.

endlesssummer,
While in Positano, make sure to have at least one dinner or lunch in the mountain village of Montepertuso, which is 15 min away. Many of the restaurants will make roundtrip arangements for guests staying in Positano. Just have the concierge call ahead. Also, I wondered if you have visted Capri before? I hate to rain on your parade, but other than some beautiful views, we thought it was much less beautiful and much MORE touristy ( is that possible!) than Santorini. |
You will adore La Minervertta as a base in SOrrento- it underwent an extreme makeover of both rooms and prices last year-It's truly gorgeous!
