Cool, small Left Bank hotels...

We're goin to Paris 11/19 on our Honeymoon...(yes...it's true...I can scarcely believe it myself. Of course, we organized the Honeymoon 1st...then the pre-nup (I did the pre-pre, nup-nup today & met with the attorneys) and then the wedding. OK, ok...we haven't done that yet...but we do have the tickets... :) ). So...any recommendations on small, quiet, terribly de riguer 3 or 4 star hotels would be GREATLY appreciated. (Comments on the Louis II??? I saw it when I was last there.) Merci, Jean.

Ramblero Oct 14th, 2004 07:32 PM

Ooooooops!!!! I meant to say Left Bank...5th or 6th Arrondisement. Pardonnez moi... : )

francophile03 Oct 14th, 2004 08:34 PM

First of all, congratulations! Next is the timing. November I'm not sure if the really popular hotels have availabilities still-not saying they don't just maybe a bit tight. It's not like high season of Sept. & October but it's only a month away.

Louis II doesn't seem too favorable for the room size. Just today I believe someone said their friend reserved 5 nights and stayed like one night only as the room was claustrophobic.

Well, you can try Hotel Left Bank St. Germain, Hotel de St. Germain des Pres on rue Bonaparte, Millesime Hotel, Hotel des Saints Peres, Artus Hotel, Hotel de Buci, L'Hotel, just some examples.

francophile03 Oct 14th, 2004 08:35 PM

Oh forgot, you can try Relais Christine and Duc de St. Simon as well.

Congratulations. I would recommend the Hotel St Paul near the Luxembourg Gardens or the Hotel De L'abbaye at #10, Rue Cassette.

Hôtel Parc Saint-Séverin
(3-star)

Hôtel des Grandes Écoles

(3-star)
Hôtel d'Angleterre
http://www.hotel-dangleterre.com/
(Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson & Ernest & Hadley Hemingway have stayed here and this is a 3-star)
Relais Hôtel du Vieux Pars
http://www.vieuxparis.com/
(this hotel used to be a grungy hotel known as the Hôtel Rachou or the Beat Hotel where the Beats such as Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs & Gregory Corso stayed in the '50s - Jack Kerouac visited but was never a registered guest - I popped in here my last trip & they have photos of the Beats on the walls and they allowed me to look into the hotel register at Corso's last entry complete w/pic - very glam & expensive 4-star hotel now)
Hôtel St-Grégoire
Hôtel le Sainte-Beuve

L'Hôtel that francophile03 mentioned is the hotel where Oscar Wilde died and is a 4 star. Jim Morrison, I just read tonight, once stayed in the room the Wilde died in.

Must it be a 3 or 4 star? The Hôtel St-Jacques is charming and romantic in that this was a location for the Audrey Hepburn/Cary Grant movie Charade.

We just returned from Paris where we stayed at our favorite in the 6th - the Hotel des Saints Peres on the Rue Saints Peres, a half block south of the Blvd St. Germaine. This is our third stay and we love the hotel. It is a 3* meeting the criteria you state. The rooms are charming and a bit larger than the usual Paris 3* and the baths are large and modern. The staff is welcoming and helpful. You can see the web site and even make reservations at www.esprit-de-france.com.

francophile03 Oct 15th, 2004 04:20 AM

Hi Beatchick, about that room at l'Hotel-just coincidence hopefully. :-)

FYI- Looks like Hotel d'Angleterre refurbished their rooms after I stayed there as mine needed some refreshing surely.

BTilke Oct 15th, 2004 06:20 AM

What do you mean by "cool"? Do you want modern, trendy or you prefer quaint, old-fashioned?

Beatchick Oct 15th, 2004 06:44 AM

Hey F_03! Actually, Jim WANTED to stay in the room Oscar Wilde died in. But that's not where Jim died. He died in an apt on 19, rue Beautreillis in the Marais (near the Village St-Paul area).

Regarding the Angleterre, I believe the top floor suite was always safe to stay in, quite nice I've been told by a friend, but that lower level rooms had some problems. I'm glad they've refurbished.

SuzieC Oct 15th, 2004 06:49 AM

for a tad modern chic, the Montalambert? My boss raves about it.

francophile03 Oct 15th, 2004 08:08 AM

Hi Beatchick, I know, I was just kidding. Not sure if I would like to stay in Oscar's old room though. :)

Thanks for the tip about d'Angleterre. I wonder if that particular room is reserved for repeat guests. Would be nice-pricey but nice...

I think Hotel du Vieux Paris is pretty expensive. Lovely location and all as it's right across from the Seine practically but the rates are high.

Underhill Oct 15th, 2004 08:18 AM

The Hôtel le Madison is definitely de rigeur and meets your other requirements as well. We stayed there last month and thought it just about perfect. It's very popular with European visitors; so check soon about a possible reservation.

Surlok Oct 15th, 2004 09:26 AM

I also suggest Relais Saint Sulpice, Hotel Artus, Hotel de Buci, Relais Medicis, the Luxembourg Parc, Hotel Saint Germain de Prés (at Rue Bonaparte), Hotel Saint Germain (at Rue du Bac):

We stayed at the Hotel Saint Germain (at 88 Rue du Bac)and loved it. Very small and they called us by name.

Beatchick Oct 15th, 2004 10:57 AM

Francophile - duh!! I should've known YOU were kidding!! :)

Yes, both hotels are lovely but out of my current travel budget. I've wanted to stay at the d'Angleterre since I first read about it. I'd probably stay at the other ONE TIME just to say I'd stayed in the Beat Hotel. :D

Hi Surlok, I've haven't seen you around in a while!

oakglen Oct 15th, 2004 11:07 AM

On our next trip we will be staying at the Walt,37 ave La Motte Piccquet, in the 7th. This is a new 25 room ****, well situated near a metro, lots of good restaurants, and a short walk to the Tour Eiffel.. More pricey than most of those already mentioned but it meets your requirements. JP

ms_go Oct 15th, 2004 11:15 AM

The Pont Royal has always been one of my favorites. It has been completely renovated since I last stayed there, and it is now a bit on the pricey side. But I love the location.

socialworker Oct 15th, 2004 11:25 AM

HI Ramblero--mamc and I are two of the participants on this board who frequently recommend the Hotel des Saints Peres on the Rue Saints Peres. When my husband and I were there, we had a wonderful room w/one of the biggest most elegant bathrooms ever!! Francophile gave you a lot of good suggestions as did others. However, since *you* brought it up, a prenup?? Were you joking or are you just someone who likes to be prepared for the "worst case scenario"?

alg Oct 15th, 2004 11:51 AM

If by "cool" you mean modern/hip decor, you may want to look into the Hotel Artus. The location is great and I can't say enough nice things about the staff, they were all so helpful (even mailed by shopping purchases home at a nominal fee so my luggage would make the weight requirement on the rest of our trip)
