Whoooooooooops! I didn't see wombat's post when I was typing my last post. Sorry Huitres.

So wombat, it's your turn to give us a clue.

wombat7 Jul 27th, 2004 12:51 PM

I am looking for the name of a city 7 letters:
_ _ R _ _ _ _

Clues:
It is by the water, at the end of a very, very long street which despite its name is actually quite old. The city also has a very, very tall "building".

111op Jul 28th, 2004 04:40 AM

Hint?

yk Jul 28th, 2004 05:36 AM

I think it is Toronto (Young Street & CN Tower)? But this is supposed to be a Europe board?

111op Jul 28th, 2004 05:37 AM

That's an interesting take -- but why would Toronto be at the end of a very, very long street?

grandmere Jul 28th, 2004 05:50 AM

I thought the street in Toronto was Yonge St.?

This is very curious. We need to hear from wombat.

111op Jul 28th, 2004 05:53 AM

I think you're right, grandmere, but it's pronounced the same way as "Young." It's certainly an interesting take.

I did look at a map of Europe and looked at which places have "R" in the 3rd position and have letters. :-)

111op Jul 28th, 2004 05:53 AM

7 letters, I meant, of course.

yk Jul 28th, 2004 06:03 AM

You're right grandmere. It should be Yonge street, but it does sound like "young".

< It is by the water, at the end of a very, very long street which despite its name is actually quite old. >

Maybe wombat meant the WATER (Lake Ontario) is at the end of the street, not the city.

111op Jul 28th, 2004 06:05 AM

It's interesting. Wombat doesn't check in very often though. It looks like (s)he has only contributed to fewer than 50 threads.

wombat7 Jul 28th, 2004 08:29 AM

Apologies - I checked yesterday but no response - did not have the opportunity until now.

Toronto is the answer - Yonge Street (pronounced Young) is the longest street in the world. The water is Lake Ontario - CN Tower is right

Now as to European Board...mea culpa - forgot that "small" point!!!

Do check the Board alot, post not that often.

yk your thread.

111op Jul 28th, 2004 08:31 AM

Wow -- well done, yk!

yk Jul 28th, 2004 09:12 AM

A sign that shows I spend way too much time on this board, is that I thought of the answer (Toronto) just before I woke up from sleep this morning. Maybe my subconscious mind works better than my conscious mind!

Next clue:
The longest possible duration for a total solar eclipse is 7 1/2 minutes. However, 30+ years ago, a group of scientists aboard a particular aircraft (8 letters) were able to "chase" the eclipse for 74 minutes.

Name the aircraft (8 letters) and
Origin of the flight
_ _ _ (3) _ _ _ _ _ _ (6) de _ _ _ n (4) _ _ n _ _ _ _ (7)

The "n" comes from ToroNto (lets not lose sight of the "crossword" origin of this game.)

wombat7 Jul 28th, 2004 09:21 AM

Aircraft is Concorde and origin is Las Palmas but not sure about the other bit

111op Jul 28th, 2004 09:22 AM

Something about the Canary Islands.

I can't the Spanish to work out though.

111op Jul 28th, 2004 09:23 AM

Oh, gran canaria.

yk Jul 28th, 2004 09:26 AM

sí, sí!

I guess you 2 (wombat & 111op) have to fight over to see who gets to give the next clue!

wombat7 Jul 28th, 2004 09:28 AM

111op - please feel free -

111op Jul 28th, 2004 09:28 AM

Wombat can go. I've made up enough of these clues that I can take a rest, I think. :-) But do give us a clue related to Europe.

111op Jul 28th, 2004 09:29 AM

We posted at the same time, but please give us the next clue.
