Clue:
This city will host the final game of a major sports event in 2006. The sports stadium has just been refurbished, as it was originally built over 7 decades ago for another major sports event. That historic sports event was recorded as a movie by a female director, which many viewed it as a "propaganda" movie. The star of the sports event was an American athlete. Name: 1. City (6 letters, 2nd letter "e") 2. 2006 Sports event (5,3) 3. German filmmaker (First name 4 with "e" in the 2nd position, last name 11) 4. Movie (7) 5. American athlete (First name 5 or 6, depending on the spelling, last name 5, with "e" in 3rd position) |
Ok, I know some of this without Googling.
Berlin Leni Riefenstahl |
Jesse Owens, presumably
Movie was Olympia? I need to check this. |
Sports -- always my weakness.
World Cup |
Yeap, that's it.
For those who are interested, here is a link to an article on BBC news. The stadium has its opening ceremony this past weekend. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3942661.stm |
Clue: This is the name of a/an (nationality = 7 letters) artist and also the name of a dish.
(Name = 9 letters, 2nd = a) |
Actually I've been wanting to see "Olympia" for a while -- it's seldom revived. "Triumph" is widely viewed as propaganda though, but as a film, it's quite interesting. Controversial woman, that's for sure. There is actually a documentary called "The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl."
|
I haven't seen any of her movies. I believe Olympia has parts I & II. Certainly an interesting woman with an interesting (and long) life.
Answer to your clue: Italian, (Vittore) Carpaccio |
Yes, that's it! So you can give us the next clue.
"Triumph" is worth seeing (hope people don't twist this comment unnecessarily), but when I saw it in a revival, the speeches were all in German with no subtitles (which I guess was for the better). That part was quite dull but frightening given the intensity of the speeches and our knowledge of what had come after (the intensity was obvious even when I didn't understand what was being said). |
This famous family of artists (grandfather, father & son) all have the same first name & last name. The grandfather was born in Scotland, and later emigrated to the US. The grandfather was most famous for his work on a city hall and especially the statue on top of the city hall. The father was famous for a fountain in the same city. The son, most famous of all 3, has works all over the world. His works mostly are hanging sculptures. Interestingly (to me at least), one of his work hangs in the museum of the same city, and with the museum, the fountain, & the city hall all lined up in a straight line along a big street.
Name: 1. The artists (all have the same names) 9,6 2. The statue on top of city hall 7,4 ("i" in 2nd & 5th positions of first word) 3. The fountain 5 4. The general term for the son's hanging sculptures 7 ("i" in 4th position) |
I put a bid in for Alexander Calder (the youngest one of the three). Will research the rest. :-)
|
Swann is the fountain.
William Penn is the sculpture. |

Interesting clue. |
This city in question is Philadelphia, which I didn't mention in my clue. It was interesting to me, as all 3 sites are located along Benjamin Franklin Parkway which is one of the biggest streets in the city. The city hall sits at one end of BFP, while the Museum of Art sits at the other end. Half way between the 2 is the Swann Fountain.
|
Interesting. I'll have to look for this if I find myself in Philadelphia.
Clue: Name this artist (first name = 6 letters, 4th = "i" and last name = 5 letters) whose grandfather is probably much more famous (first name = 7 letters). In fact, the grandfather is so famous that an adjective bearing his last name is used all the time. |
Hint: One can argue that the grandfather's work has spawned a whole cottage industry. Either you're involved in this sort of thing or you probably know a friend who's involved in this sort of thing.
|
Still no idea!
Anyhow, Philadelphia is only 90mins by train from NYC. You should go visit some time, plus, it has the only Rodin Museum outside of France. |
I've been thinking about it, actually. I think that there's a Chinatown bus and that would be very cheap.
Ok, another hint: The grandfather might have an interesting take (or not) on the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal (and probably the 5-letter object that purportedly made an appearance -- no, not the obvious 5-letter object you must be thinking...). |
AMWAY? :-o
|
Huh? No.
