Efoss3: The blue should have something to do with the former Savoia royal family.
I'm an ex-pat living in Italy and it was a madhouse! Everybody was honking their horns and flying their flags and screaming! It was great.
I live in front of a hospital and even the ambulances were turning on their lights and sirens to celebrate!

Yes, kismetchimera, if you'd read the "why soccer/" and a couple of other threads, you'd have seen how the mostly, but not entirely, British coterie dismissed other teams, including Italy and France, as "show ponies", "old farts" and "utter pants." All of whom were to be swept aside in their team's march toward victory. Didn't quite work out that way ;-)
So, congrats to Italy, champs again! We too are waiting to hear the full story on the Zidane head butt.

Here in Paris, it was wild all day yesterday -- the air horn blasting was the worst.
At 8:10 last night, we walked down Rue St. Jacques, fighting our way past the hoodlums who were stopping traffic, even cars, until the occupants would declare their loyalty to France. If these drunken hoodlums are so into the game, why weren't they somewhere watching it, instead of causing trouble in the streets while the game itself was taking place?
We ate dinner during the game and could hear roars of approval and then lots of horn honking when it was over, so we falsely assumed France had won. There sure are a lot of Italians in Paris who really were being boisterous. The riot police were out in force in the Latin Quarter; fortunately not needed.

"What a game it was! I'm wondering why the Italian team wears blue instead of the colors of their flag? Does anyone know why?"

The blue, or should I say, Azzuro, a very particular kind of blue, was the colour of the old Royal Family.

From my apartment I can see across the whole of the skyline of central London, and about 1/2 an hour after the final whistle, I could see a HUGE firework display going off somewhere in the West End (red, white and green). It was like New Year.

Anybody want to join me to find the nearest French embassy or consulate?

Why, shouldn't we check if their flags flying half mast? Shouldn't we be sympathetic and leave our condolence notes? :))
