TRSW Jul 9th, 2006 12:43 PM

Way to go ITALY!!!!!!

kleeblatt Jul 9th, 2006 12:53 PM

I live in a little town in Switzerland. Besides the cowbells, it's usually very quiet at night. Tonight people are honking their horns and yelling, "Italia!"

I never cease to be amazed.

LoveItaly Jul 9th, 2006 12:58 PM

Me too AA.

Do you have a webcame site for Rome that would show the festivities by any chance?

kismetchimera Jul 9th, 2006 01:16 PM

BTilke Jul 9th, 2006 01:34 PM

Yes, the "show ponies" put on quite a show! And congrats to the French as well for making it to the finals.

Viajero2 Jul 9th, 2006 01:42 PM

The piazza aroud the Cathedral in Turin looks pretty crowded:

first the car horns started and now the police helicopters are hovering very low around my house...must be a little trouble out there.

SeaUrchin Jul 9th, 2006 02:13 PM

walkingaround, where do you live? In Italy?

Efoss3 Jul 9th, 2006 02:15 PM

What a game it was! I'm wondering why the Italian team wears blue instead of the colors of their flag? Does anyone know why?

Thanks,
Evelyn

Justice was served with 4 days delay. Domenech deserved the title of clown of the world cup. Zidane has a future in bullfighting (who guess in which role?)

london....lots of louts.

i_am_kane Jul 9th, 2006 02:34 PM

We were in Rome when Italy beat Germany, and what a sight it was...cars blasting their horns and people waving flags from the car windows. People running down the street with large flags in their hands.

The celebration went well into the night. I can just imagine what it must be like tonight.

SeaUrchin Jul 9th, 2006 02:44 PM

I put this on another thread re Rome tonight.

kismetchimera Jul 9th, 2006 04:27 PM

< the "show ponies" put on quite a showly > Really Btilke? I see a lots of Jealousy in your statement..

As you can see that the so called"PONIES", won the World CUP 4 times and are the World Champion..

Have a great night!!:)

luv2cthings Jul 9th, 2006 04:40 PM

Kismetchimera, I think you took BTilke's comment in the wrong way. On the other thread today, he said: " It's amusing to read the other Fodors posts on the World Cup to see which other teams posters were SURE were going to make it to the finals. England-Argentina or England-Germany were among the most common predictions. Nobody predicted an Italy-France final. The Italians were dismissed as mere 'show ponies.' "

I think BTilke was poking fun at those who dismissed team Italia.

kismetchimera Jul 9th, 2006 04:50 PM

If this is the case than MEA CULPA Btilke...:):)Please accept my Apology..:)

bridezilla Jul 10th, 2006 12:08 AM

Efoss3: The blue should have something to do with the former Savoia royal family.
I'm an ex-pat living in Italy and it was a madhouse! Everybody was honking their horns and flying their flags and screaming! It was great.
I live in front of a hospital and even the ambulances were turning on their lights and sirens to celebrate!

BTilke Jul 10th, 2006 05:32 AM

Yes, kismetchimera, if you'd read the "why soccer/" and a couple of other threads, you'd have seen how the mostly, but not entirely, British coterie dismissed other teams, including Italy and France, as "show ponies", "old farts" and "utter pants." All of whom were to be swept aside in their team's march toward victory. Didn't quite work out that way ;-)
So, congrats to Italy, champs again! We too are waiting to hear the full story on the Zidane head butt.

Here in Paris, it was wild all day yesterday -- the air horn blasting was the worst.
At 8:10 last night, we walked down Rue St. Jacques, fighting our way past the hoodlums who were stopping traffic, even cars, until the occupants would declare their loyalty to France. If these drunken hoodlums are so into the game, why weren't they somewhere watching it, instead of causing trouble in the streets while the game itself was taking place?
We ate dinner during the game and could hear roars of approval and then lots of horn honking when it was over, so we falsely assumed France had won. There sure are a lot of Italians in Paris who really were being boisterous. The riot police were out in force in the Latin Quarter; fortunately not needed.

"What a game it was! I'm wondering why the Italian team wears blue instead of the colors of their flag? Does anyone know why?"

The blue, or should I say, Azzuro, a very particular kind of blue, was the colour of the old Royal Family.

From my apartment I can see across the whole of the skyline of central London, and about 1/2 an hour after the final whistle, I could see a HUGE firework display going off somewhere in the West End (red, white and green). It was like New Year.

francophile03 Jul 10th, 2006 08:05 AM

Forza Italia! Campioni del mondo!

Kaneohe Jul 10th, 2006 09:10 AM

FainaAgain Jul 10th, 2006 10:20 AM

Anybody want to join me to find the nearest French embassy or consulate?

Why, shouldn't we check if their flags flying half mast? Shouldn't we be sympathetic and leave our condolence notes? :))
