Dear all Fodorites,
I have been living here for the past 4 years and I can assure you that things from overseas are seen more exagerated than here. I am not a political analyst but I do not think there will be an imminent coup d'etat, but just two different views over a political issue. I hope I have helped you all.

If you're really worried, get travel insurance (it usually covers things like coups)

When the Aussies arte saying "Europeans" what they mean really is "Brits". There have been several attacks on resorts where we go on holibob (These resorts are like southend with more kebab shops)

Bilercin - thanks for your observations. You are indeed helpful.

To many of the other posters: this is not an issue of being "scared" because of a possible terrorist attack. I happened to be in New York City the morning of 9/11 and I've been back twice a year since then. The risks of being in such an event are very low and do not keep me from going anywhere I want to go. Rather, what I don't want is to have a political situation such as is going on in Turkey right now to mess up my annual vacation. Of course, I don't want to be in a country where political unrest becomes violent, but as importantly I don't want to be in a country whose political unrest could restrict movement, close off areas that I'm wanting to see, enforce curfews, etc. I just want to enjoy myself and if the political climate is not right in Turkey today, I can go another time when it is better. However, if the people who really do know the situation advise that this is no big deal, I'll go as planned.

Bilercin--

Thank you for the thoughtful response. Unfortunately so many posters felt compelled to jump in and comment on a situation they really have no knowledge of. I also appreciate hearing from someone who actually lives in Turkey.
