Cheap Paris Hotels
I'm sorry, I know there's a bunch of topics like this but any help would be very much appreciated.
My sister and I are going to Paris from feb 18th through the 27th and we've been looking into places to stay. We're both students and so have basically no money. We found a hotel in Montmartre for 34 euros a night called the Hotel Bonsejour which seems great but we were hoping to spend the first 3 nights closer to the centre of town. I guess what we're looking for is a hotel for less than 35 euros close to the centre of town (I'd like to do a lot of walking). It doesn't have to be nice or have big rooms but safe would be good since we're two young women. Thanks a lot. |
This was has been discussed recently - someone posted that just stayed here in January: Hotel Tiquetonne
http://www.eurocheapo.com/paris/list...tiquetonne.asp http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...de_France.html Another good one: Hotel Port Royal http://www.hotelportroyal.fr/english...ion/index2.htm http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...de_France.html And one more: Hotel Marignan www.hotel-marignan.com http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...de_France.html Not sure about that 34€ limit for 'center' of Paris though..is that for a room or per-person, sharing?... maybe a hostel? (which I know nothing about)... |
I just went to Google and entered <Paris hostels Latin Quarter>.
At a quick glance looked like you might find a bunk at approx. 16 euro per person or a 1-star hotel starting at approx. 56 euro for a double room in the Latin Quarter. I really don't think a <hotel for less than 35 euro close to the centre of town> is a likely possibility. |
Try the Excelsior in the 5th. We have stayed there and it serves the purpose of being in a good location and easy on the wallet. www.excelsiorlatin.com

<b>Hôtel Henri IV</b> - Place Dauphine on the Ile de la Cité (where Nôtre Dame is located and not far from the Louvre)
http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/b0bfd/ http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/d4557/ http://www.metropoleparis.com/1997/7...9/mail239.html <b>Hôtel de Lille</b> - located near the Louvre - 8 rue Pelican (Fodor's wrote about it in their 1991 Pocket Paris Guide) http://www.nedcampholiday.info/level...nding=internet <b>Hôtel le Central</b> - located in the Latin Quarter at 6 rue Descartes not far from where Hemingway lived & worked - and I believe he wrote about this hotel in <u>A Moveable Feast</u> |

Duh, I guess the website for Hôtel le Central would come in handy! |
Excelsior is showing rates on their website of 78 euro for a double room.
|
Hôtel de Lille is showing 90 euro for a double on their website.
|
<b>Hôtel Henri IV</b> - 29€-35€ double without shower; 42€-45€ double with shower; 55€-69€ double with complete bathroom. Rates include breakfast
<b>Hôtel de Lille</b> - double 43-58€ <b>Hôtel le Central</b> - single 32-40€, double 44-49€ The prices are possible in a centrally located area but my only fear is that this is so close to the time you want to go that all the rooms may be snapped up BUT you may luck out with a last-minute cancellation! The best of luck to you guys and I wish you a fantastic trip to Paris!! :D |
I think you are going to be limited to hostels for that rate, although I think I've seen some around 40-50 euro for a double in the 14th or 13th somewhere, or around Oberkampf in the 11th which could be good for you. Look in www.eurocheapo.com, they could be in there, and I have seen some others for maybe 40 euro in there. I think around the Bastille and Oberkampf could be the best bet for you.
I'd be concerned a 34 euro hotel in Montmartre could be for hookers or also rent by the hour. However, I did see Bonsejour reviews on www.jack-travel.com favorably, so think it's okay. That is a great website and he knows quite a few low-end hotels, so I'd suggest you review that, also. Even there, 35 euros is not likely, but 50-70 is. Here is his page on low budget hotels http://www.jack-travel.com/Paris/Par...get_Hotels.htm |
I've stayed at Hotel de Lille/Pelican. The location is excellent. I had a double for 56 euros per night. There're a couple of Hotel de Lilles. I think that this one is on 6 r. Pelican (not 8?) -- if memory serves. But that's not really too important.
I also stayed at Hotel Tiquetonne, which I prefer. I paid 50 euros for a double. Unfortunately neither of this satisfies your budget. I think that it'll be very hard to meet the budget of 35 euros, but try looking also at Time Out/Paris for budget options. |
Beatchick, you're right about the address for Pelican:
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34522491 Sorry about that. I think that Tiquetonne is at 6 r. Tiquetonne so I got the two confused. |
No need to apologize, 111op, we are both sticklers for giving out correct info! ;)
I'm glad you gave your review of that hotel, I've considered staying but was never too sure about it. Yes, it is a superb location especially if the Louvre is your primary destination or shopping along the rue de Rivoli. Then, of course, you've got Les Halles & the Montorgeuil area to the east (where Au Pied de Cochon is - a restaurant I've been meaning to visit in Paris). |
You are students, so try the youth hostels. My friend's daughters, 19 & 21 years old, stayed at one in Batille area for EUR19.00 pp breakfast included in a double room. Although it may not look as central location as Latin Quarter, it is not too bad and there si a metro station nearby. Try google search for their site. I found it the other day and posted its URL here or you may find it on this board if you do a text search too.
|
>..posted its URL here OR you may find it..
That should read SO. |
Sorry. I should have learned my lesson by now. That there are a number of Parisian hotels with the same or similar names!
|
Isn't there a hospital near the Louvre that has rooms on one floor that are really cheap? I think I read about it here a few months ago. Maybe someone knows?
|
StCirq, I remember a post mentioning such but that was nearly 2 years ago and that one was about a hospital next to Notre Dame. When I visited Paris in the summer of 2003, I entered the court yard of the hospital (Was it Hotel Dieu?)but I did not get to find the hotel part.
|
|
Those were some rooms in Hotel Dieu near Notre Dame -- I was surprised they'd rent those to tourists, rather than families of those in the hospital, but think they do at least sometimes. They weren't that cheap, about the same price as most 2* hotels around there (100 euro or so). I took a tour of Hotel Dieu once because I'm in the health care professions, and can't quite picture wanting to stay there as just a tourist.
|
FWIW, I have a friend who stayed at that Hotel Bonsejour (on rue Lepic, just off Boulevard de Clichy, right?). She was traveling with another single woman and they found it fine for their needs (which were apparently to spend as little as possible on a hotel so as to indulge in expensive dinners every night! Not my idea of fun in Paris, but <i>chacun a son gout</i>). |
Well, if you're considering centrally-located youth hostels then you probably might wish to consider the <b>MIJE Youth Hostels</b>. There's one on the rue des Barres in the Marais behind St-Gervais-St-Protais near Chez Julien. The building is rather historic and is associated with Heloise & Abelard, those medieval lovers.
Maubuisson - 12, rue des Barres http://www.mije.com/versanglais/indexenglishindiv.htm 27-32€ (breakfast included - if you stay in the group room then it is 27€, for a double 32€) OR <b>Young & Happy Youth Hostel</b> in the Latin Quarter (80, rue Mouffetard): http://www.youngandhappy.fr/english/sum.htm 20-23€ (if you stay in a dorm room it would be 20€/person or you & she can stay in a double for 23€/person, since it would be in low season) That's alright, Suze!! ;) |
Thanks Beatchick. I just added to the Pelican thread and the corrected link is here:

My daughter has stayed at the Young and Happy hostel and recommends it. I recently stayed at Hotel Margnan mentioned above for 45 E for a single room (On the sixth floor, no elevator, gasp gasp) and found it to be basic but clean safe and convenient and the staff a were really helpful. Also you can use their laundry and kitchen facilities which helps to save a bit more.
|
111op, you are awesome!
"you can use their laundry and kitchen facilities which helps to save a bit more" Now THAT is a hotel!! ;) I'm sold. |
Thanks Beatchick -- since I've gained so much from reading this forum, the least I can do is to provide what I know on the forum.
|
I often wonder what the average age is of the typical traveler who stays in a Hostel?
Any ideas? |
I'm sure the average age varies by hostel and country -- but in Paris it is pretty young. From the crowd I've seen hanging around hostels, including Young and Happy (which I've stayed near), the avg. age is a college student or slightly older--maybe 22.
|
Thanks a lot everyone! I've booked Hotel du Marais for E35 for our first three nights. We have two single beds so it should be perfect.
|
Just as "fyi" there is one post on Tripadvisor, not good...
"Horrible experience: The owner/manager of the hotel basically kicked us out when we refused to pay above the rate we had agreed upon via fax weeks before. We presented a copy of the agreement whereupon he claimed he had made a mistake and that our fee was actually 100 francs per day above the agreed amount. He sprang this on us about two weeks into our 3-week stay. He rudely scoffed that he "had our credit card number and that there was nothing we could do." When I said that we intended to pay only the previously-agreed-upon amount, he threatened to call the police. I said he could send the police to find us at the U.S. embassy. We then packed, lugged our luggage out onto the street (my wife 3-months pregnant) and took the metro to the U.S. embassy. The people at the embassy could do nothing. From a telephone booth outside the U.S. embassy I managed in short order to secure a room at another hotel. (In the end, my credit card company ended up eating the extra cost.)" |
Above comment refers to "Hotel du Marais".
|
Travelnut, after I read that review, I warned my son who was going to stay there in March. He will be staying at the Delavigne (sp?) in the Latin Quarter now..elaines hotel :)
|
Why Miss Scarlett, how nice of you to dub the Delavigne 'my' hotel!!
Ohmigosh, sure hope it doesn't disappoint! |
Yes, it will be known from now on as Elaines hotel.
Actually, reading your trip report made us so glad to be able to warn him off the others (Jeanne D'Arc & du Marais) and over to the Left Bank. Between our apt and your hotel, he will not have that much traveling to do, and he will be there after we leave, so I want to think of him in a decent hotel. |
The Jeanne d'Arc is a fine hotel - I've only ever known of one person who disliked it. I know of several people who return there year after year, such as aj.
I know I felt very safe there AND I felt very welcome, too! |
just to clarify, I hadn't posted anything about the Jeanne d'Arc, though I had noted recently that at least one fodors poster didn't at all care for it. I note too that opinions on it are mixed at tripadvisor.com
The hotel that greatly disappointed me recently was the Grand Hotel des Balcons, yet it very often gets favorable reviews and mine appears to be the only negative comment so far at tripadvisor. Just goes to show that one person's dream can be another person's nightmare. |
No, Elaine, I knew you weren't being negative - you've always been kind & very fair. :)
|
Thanks a lot for the head's up. I had actually read that as well. Thankfully it's referring to a different hotel by the same name. The address is different so I think I'm safe.
|
If yours is Hotel du Marais at 16 RUE DE BEAUCE, it is listed on www.jack-travel.com and www.eurocheapo.com*, so it should be ok. Didn't realize there were two by the same name, sorry to 'alarm' you!
*although the "bad" one is listed here, too! Here is an article about the Marais from "Smarter Travel" under "Student Travel Notes": (recs your hotel) http://www.smartertravel.com/advice/...ce.php?id=6684 |
