Chagall, and a question

At the Grand Palais in Paris through June 23 is a retrospective show of Chagall and Alan Riding in today's New York Times has a nice review where I've learned that the painting that I like of the flying lovers("The couple in the blue Landscape") shows St-Paul-de-Vence in the background. I hope to be there for a few days. I posted on a French oriented forum this morning, but no response. I have trouble with some pronunciation. Can you tell me how to pronounce the (fondation)MAEGHT?

Powell Apr 22nd, 2003 11:56 AM

I believe the pronunciation is like "Mate".

Incidentally, it is a great site to view modern art. It is near the famous Colombe d'Or hotel and restaurant.

Thanks Powell, that's where I am hoping to stay because so many of my favorite French artists and film stars stayed there. And the reports on the food (important) are very good.

We've absolutely loved the Foundation Maeght. Went there briefly in the early 90's and could wait to go back. Finally made it two years ago and it was a great as we remembered. The outdoor areas are wonderful, especially all the neat fountains. The town of St Paul de Vence is delightful, a tiny walled hill town with great views. We were told the pronunciation was "muuckt", sort of like a the word "muck" with a drawl.

Don't miss the nearby Matisse Chapel (Chapelle du Rosaire) in Vence, it's a very special place. The Chagall museum and the Matisse museum in Nice are also both great . The house where Renior lived in Cagnes-sur-mer has been turned into a museum and we thought it was worth the visit. The Picassco museum in Antibes is pretty good, it has a nice collection of his ceramics. The Leger museum in Biot is interesting if you like his work.

Hi cigalechanta,

I'm afraid I can't help with the pronunciation. I've always pronounced it "might" but have no reason to believe it's correct :) What I did want to tell you is I was recently at the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach (a real gem if you haven't been) and they had this or a similar painting. It said that the couple was Chagall (born Moyshe Segal!) and his wife after she died.

Also, it appears there's a Chagall museum in Nice as follows
Muse National Message Biblique Marc Chagall
Musee
Ouvert tous les jours sauf le mardi. D'octobre juin de 10 h 17 h. De juillet septembre de 10 h 18 h.
Avenue Docteur Mnard
06000 Nice

Also, while trying to find some mention of the painting I saw to see if it's the same, I found there's an American expat in Paris who does museum tours. She's offering one of the Chagall exhibit (price sounds very steep to me at 75e)
http://www.parismuse.com/seminars/temporary.shtml

Finally, I hope you get to stay at the Colombe D'Or. The artwork there is unbelievable-the Braque mosaic on the dining terrace, the Calder sculpture at the pool, the Matisse drawing in the dining room... It is heaven on earth IMO.

Hi, thanks all.
McLaurie, I don't think that the painting"couple in the blue landscape is himself and wife, at least by what I've read, but I'll try to find out more
I've seen his works in many show and twice at local gallery who features jewish artists, and had shows of his smaller works. I'm happy to see other fans here of a much underappreciated creative force who never gave in to commercialism.

Cigalechanta-

Definitely go to the Galerie Maecht in St Pauld De Vence ==if you get a chance.....you can purchase some fabulous Chagall and also MIRO art there---

Saut, Cigalechanta! Well, now you've done it; yet another expo to see in Paris in two weeks, but it sounds wonderful! I'd skipped over it in the hopes to limit my museum "musts," but now I think I have to see it. I have no idea how to pronounce Maeght; my husband and I always pronounced it "mecked," but we totally made that up. (at least WE knew what we were talking about)

Bonsoir Mimi
It is pronounced MATE and you should also browse through the Gallerie Maeght on rue duBac on the Left Bank.
Scarlett~

I would have thought the pronunciation might be something like "mahcht" with a gutteral "ch", as that isn't a French name, but Flemish, but I don't know for sure-abbekit's directions sound best. That painting's real title in French is different (Couple au-dessus de St Paul) and has "st Paul" in the title. I don't know why they'd translate it that way.
