Cesky Krumlov hotels
 

Hi.

Can you please recommend a hotel in Cesky Krumlov for DH and me for one night in September? We'll be spending one day/night there on our way from Munich to Prague. Obviously, for such a short time, we won't be spending much time in the room, but still want something "atmospheric." Some kind of balcony would be a plus. Willing to look at all price ranges, and locations (not yet familiar with the layout of the city.)

Where have you stayed/wanted to stay? What did you like/dislike about it?

We stayed in Hotel Ruze about 10 years ago. It is a converted monastery

When I look at the photos online, I don't remember the opulence of the rooms... I remember ours being more austere. However, I do remember the soaring vaulted ceilings of the common areas.

It was convenient to walk in town... to a restaurant, etc. The hardest part was finding it - we didn't have a good map, it was before cell phones and we kept being on the wrong side of a one-way street to get to it. I finally got out, walked and asked how to get our car there. Turns out we had to go outside the city center, across the river, and back... once parked, we didn't get the car again until we left!

I stayed at Hotel Konvice in the pedestrian part of Cesky Krumlov. It was a very nice hotel with restaurant attached and they have a garden restaurant if it's not too cold.

The heat was turned on, the bathroom was small but with a large stall shower and a long counter for toiletries, the staff were helpful. Breakfast was included although it usually is in the Czech Republic. You do have to pay for parking - 160CZK per day - you get a ticket from the hotel and pay the parking rate to the hotel. I guess you could also pay at the parking lot.

If you follow the signs for the center the hotel is just after you enter the pedestrian area on the right. If you come to the main square you've gone too far. There's enough room on the road to pull over to unload luggage.

I don't remember seeing hotels with balconies in CK.

Castle View Apartments get good reviews and the rooms look nice from the photos I've seen. Don't know about balconies.

I stayed at the Hotel Dvorak and don't recommend it. My room certainly didn't look anything like the photos on Hotel.com. The bathroom was very nice and new but the room had scuff marks on the walls, the rug was stained and worn, the pillows were paper thin as was the mattress.

I did walk thru Hotel Ruze and the lobby/dining areas looked very nice. Some nice photos can be taken from their veranda out back overlooking the river.

I highly recommend trying to get a tour of the castle's baroque theater! It is only one of 4 remaining baroque theaters left in the world.

I stayed at Hotel Grand, on the square. Great location and very big rooms. If money is not a problem, then Hotel Ruze is the best hotel in town.

we did a daytrip but i did notice that some streets were very steep and of course cobbled..itd be hell for wheelie luggage and heels so wherever you book ring them and ask what the surrounds are like
it is a bit of a hike from the station and it would be uphill when going back to the station if youre planning on getting there by rail

There's a shuttle from the station; ask your hotel for information on it. I drove but I spoke to some folks who took the train from Prague for an overnight and they mentioned the shuttle bus from the station into town.

Jeremy, I've looked at the Hotel Ruze and it looks beautiful. However, the consensus on TA is that it is not worth the extra money. Do you have an opinion on this?

I looked at Zlaty Andel, on someone's recommendation here (perhaps yours), but was concerned about it's lower rating on Tripadvisor.

Well, it was 2002. Perhaps things change.

We stayed at Hotel Konvice - you will not be disappointed. This is what I wrote about it in my trip report:

We had booked a 2 bedroom suite for the 4 of us and my parents had a double. Our room was extremely large with sort of a narrow sleeping porch for the kids. It worked out great for us, we also had a small balcony out the back with a view of the castle. My parents had a nice size double. The hotel is very old and so the floors tilted and creaked a bit, but we actually found it charming!! The only other oddity was that they did not use fitted sheets but flat sheets on the beds, which had a tendency to come out. The breakfast was very good and they also made eggs to order which I LOVED! The hotel is very well located just up from the main square. The front desk people were very nice and gave great restaurant recommendations.

We had an excellent dinner at U Dobraka:
The receptionist at the hotel had recommended that we eat at U Dobraka (Siroka 74). It is a very charming open air, small restaurant where the chef cooks the meat over an open fire pit. Don’t be put off by the basic menu. Basically, the menu just lists things like “Beefsteak” or “Fish” with no descriptions. Well, the beefsteak was one of the best steaks we have ever had!! The sauce it comes with is wonderful and we also enjoyed some delicious mushroom soup. DS ordered fish, which was great as well. Our waitress was also extremely nice, something that was not always the case in the Czech Republic.
