Cell phones in Italy

Any advice as to which prepaid plan and provider to go with?

I'll need two, will be calling to NYC quite a bit as well as back and forth with my wife while we are in Rome.

Thank you!

I just reserved two cell phones to use in Rome from Cellhire.com They have a two for one deal. I haven't used them yet, but after a lot of research I chose them.

We were able to use our cell phone - it just automatically switched to the TIM network once it Italy. We had service in most areas and calls were $1.50/minute but we figured it was less of a hassle than the alternatives.

Reading through, it seems the best way to go about this is to buy a pre-paid phone when I get there.
Does anyone disagree strongly?

If you stay in Rome at one of the Daphne properties, which are highly recommended on this Forum, the hotel provides you with a cell phone for the duration of your stay. Maybe an option?
