Please be aware that Tide stain sticks are not permitted in carry-ons. At least that was my experience last fall when the TSA disallowed my Tide stain stick on the basis that it contains bleach.

Weird - I took one to London just this past Feb - and the screener saw it and said nothing (also, screeners in Ireland and at LHR let is pass too) . . . .

I know how we can "make our money:"

we sign a contract with the TSA to provide those Japanese robots used for making cars at all TSA check points.

The advantage would be that all the rules would be <b>uniformly</b> enforced.

of course, there are p[lenty of people who travel and count on those rules not being enforced so prhaps we'd go broke instead.

Marcy: TSA may allow towelettes in the States -- but on my trip in Feb, the screeners at both LHR and Frankfurt were taking them (didn't notice one way or the other in Cork)

The little moist towelette packages (Wet Ones, Shout Wipes) passed just fine outside the bag at all points. The Tide stick should be IN the bag, since it's a tube of liquid.

Since Mom's luggage had passed two security points before meeting up with us I didn't think to question how she'd packed and was sorry I didn't realize Purell sanitizing gel was clipped to the outside of her carry-on; after finding this was when they did a further search and took the insoles.

If you have a doubt, it seems best to put it in the quart bag. Despite what some say, I've found it's not always cheap or easy to buy or replace toiletries overseas.

Yes - it would be a lot less confusing for travellers if the rules were uniformly enforced. I travel a lot for business and I have never had them take my lip gloss, lip stick or hand lotion (I know) out of my purse. I did have them make me put my liquid foundation make-up into my zip loc (if it wouldn't have fit they would have taken something to make it all fit). I have never had them even question solid deodorant. I am having the same dilimna -- I worry that my bag may not make the connection in AMS to Rome so I do not want to check my bag - plan to either ship a small box over to hotel prior to flight or checking a bag with just my (and 2 other travellers) extra toiletries (and we are NOT high maintenance - it's just tough to get everything in one little baggie)!!

There is an incorrect statements in a post above that says that lip gloss is treated differently from &quot;lipstick&quot;. This isn't true, it's just the consistency. I have many lipglosses that are just like lipsticks in appearance and form and are treated no differently. Just because one is clear and another a color doesn't make any difference (I also have tinted lipglosses that are just more sheer than a lipstick, but you couldn't tell that by looking at the tube at all). If you had a lipgloss that was very liquid, that would be another story.

It is so true that if we are confused, the TSA agents appear to be also. And there is NO common sense involved. :( I recently boarded flight at DFW with two visible ziploc baggies, both half full. Nothing said. Upon return, TSA agent in Colorado Springs had me squeeze it into one bag. I had to laugh. Really, do you think everyone on my flight felt safer because I had one ziploc baggie full of 3-oz liquids and one empty? Geez. And by golly, make sure it is a Ziploc or Hefty quart-size bag...they don't appear to know what size a &quot;quart&quot; is if it is not made by one of these two manufacturers. I was using a quart-size bag with a real zipper on it; the TSA agent insisted it wasn't a quart-sized bag. I held it up over their picture of their quart size bag, and it was EXACTLY the same size. She refused to let me carry my liquids in it. I was livid. :( Fortunately, found an AA employee who had just finished her sandwich and gave me her quart-size baggie. sigh.....

Not really - it is pretty standardized. Lipsticks/chapsticks w/ a &quot;waxy&quot; consistency - are allowed. Traditional lipstick-type tubes w/ solid contents.

The items that have to go in the ziplok bag are <u>liquid-type</u> lip glosses - the sorts that are liquid w/ an applicator or that squeeze out of a tube.

This whole gel insert thing in the shoes has me wondering. I was going to buy a pair of Naturalizer shoes that have a Dr. Scholls gel insert in the heel (it's very small). Is that going to be an issue? It's not a seperate insert, it's connected to the shoe and cannot be removed.

I have those gel inserts in many pairs of casual shoes; I take them off to put through the scanner and nobody has ever said anything...YET!

I cannot believe we are having a battle about what constitues &quot;lip gloss&quot; which actually is, as everyone knows, the aftermath of a GREAT kiss...so pucker up, Janis.
