If the Mansart's your choice then you need to make sure they reserve a room with a/c for you.

Marianna Apr 9th, 2004 02:01 AM

Thanks, Underhill, for the information about your favorite hotel. My husband and I will do some research this weekend between Easter visits and dinners.

The Madison email was very polite with assurances and a "don't worry" because all will be done by July.

Westiedogs, I hinted at some negative rumblings but it sounds as if you said it outright. Please post here and let us know what response you get from the Madison. Hope you have a great trip!

westiedogs Apr 9th, 2004 10:40 AM

Two e-mails to the Madison (polite, of course) asking about the construction have gone unanswered - it has been going on two days since I sent the first one. It's same the e-mail I have used before and they responded so it's not that. Now I AM getting concerned...I have visions of being awakened, bleery-eyed, at 6 am by little frenchmen, cigarettes hanging out of their mouths, wildly ripping wallpaper and jack-hammering. #@#$#$%$

Marianna Apr 9th, 2004 03:01 PM

Westiedogs, they were very prompt with the reply to my email. My email was sent on the evening of the 8th and they had replied by 9AM (east coast time) the next morning. I can understand why you would be so upset about not hearing from them - it makes you fear the worst. I hope you hear soon in case you want to change your plans. Having recently stayed in a hotel which had its enitre first floor and lobby under construction (we did not know this until after we arrived), it can be a very frustrating and disruptive experience. I hope things work out for you. Keep us informed.

Day three and no response from the Madison. I am making back-up reservations and will probably cancel. Underhill, did your people in Paris have any luck?

Underhill Apr 10th, 2004 08:32 AM

Westiedog (I have a friend with 2 Westies; boy, are they cute!)--

One set of friends is taking a break from Paris and won't return until tomorrow; the other hopes to get over to the Madison for a look sometime today.

I think alternative lodgings would be a very good idea--you never know how much disruption is involved in renovations. If the work is expected to be completed in July, that means it might not be--and given the timelines for construction people, it probably won't be. As a result, work will be held over to September because the workers will go on vacation in August.

We have back-up reservations, but I hate to think of staying somewhere
else--the neighborhood is so nice.

Riverchick, Westiedogs, Underhill - Will you please post here when you have some information? We are not sure what to do at this time about our reservations in July so your help in finding out what is going on with the Madison will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Underhill Apr 10th, 2004 09:54 AM

Marianna,

I will indeed post when I have further information. Meanwhile, you should probably book another hotel as back-up, just in case. Try the Ste-Beuve--very helpful people.

hi,
I sent one last note - 3 times is a charm. I have booked Le Villa St. Germaine - a 4 star up the street on Rue Jacob. More $$$ and modern ( i was looking forward to more Parisian style) but I am picky. They are having a special. If I don't hear from Madison by tomorrow, I'm cancelling. Since we are leaving in less than 2 weeks, I don't was to wait much more. Underhill, in my house it is ALL about the dog....if I could have figured out how to take him to Paris with me, I would. He probably wouldn't mind like the Parisian dogs.....too spoiled. I will let everybody know if I hear anything. I think Riverchick has already left.

Late reply to your post, but I thought I would add my 2 cents. I too was booked at the Madison for a stay in March, but cancelled several weeks before due to the uncertainty of an acceptable room with my "run of the house rate" of about 150 euros (no breakfast included). My daughter and I ended up at the Best Western Left Bank ST. Germaine with a rate of 110 euros for a double room, breakfast included and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was small, but charming with a nice modern marble bath, and the breakfast was great! The location was super- even better than the Madison imho- Thanks to all of the posters here for their recommendation on this!!

marcy_ Apr 10th, 2004 11:08 AM

westiedogs,
If you have a chance, will you stop by the Madison while you're there and let us know the "scoop"?

We have reservations there for July, based on recommendations by this forum, but now have made back-up reservations at the Relais St. Germain, which is where we've always stayed before.

We're waiting to hear more before making our final decision, so any feedback is welcome!

Underhill Apr 10th, 2004 02:20 PM

Our back-up reservations are at Le Sainte-Beuve, near the Luxembourg Gardens (and thus near Gérard Mulot's little shop). I considered Les Rives de Nôtre-Dame, which have good-sized rooms that are prettily decorated in Provençal style, but have misgivings because of the potentially noisy location on St-Michel.

So now we wait for the verdict on the Madison. We don't leave until early September; so with luck all will be well again.

glsebs Apr 11th, 2004 02:01 AM

We just returned from a wonderful 4 day stay at the D'Aubusson. Our standard room was very comfortable and larger than the standard rooms we have had at two different 4 star hotels in the area. The location is perfect...in the lively St. Germain area but on a very quiet side street. The service was attentive and pleasant...the concierges answered all of our questions with a smile and made all our reservations for us. I would not let a couple of negative reviews deter anyone from staying there. We had a perfectly delightful experience.

westiedogs Apr 11th, 2004 09:54 AM

Hi, After four days with no response (I sent them three notes) I have cancelled with the Madison. Even if the constructions is not going currently - which I doubt---when would anybody get a renovation done in a month---their lack of response worries me. It is our anniversary and my husband's 1st trip to Paris, so I am not willing to take a chance. I am waiting to hear from the D'Aubusson and have received a reduced rate from the Relais Christine (ok - I know - totally different class of hotel) but at this point, I may go for the gusto. I will stop in the Madison while I am there (leaving on the 22nd)

Iregeo Apr 11th, 2004 09:56 AM

westiedogs, may I ask what the reduced rate is at Relais Christine? Thank you.

francophile03 Apr 11th, 2004 10:01 AM

Hi, I don't want to confuse things more, however, there have been negative comments on tripadvisor about Relais Christine. Of course, the validity of these negative comments are questionable but just fyi.

Regarding your cancellation at Le Madison, if they haven't responded to your recent emails, make sure they do respond to your cancellation. Otherwise, you may be charged!

Hoping you find a replacement hotel soon.

westiedogs Apr 11th, 2004 10:08 AM

Hi,

I have read all the reviews - thanks. I know, no perfect place...I just love the quaint stone type of atmosphere with that total Parisian feel - plus it is listed as a "romantic" type of hotel. This is our anniversary so don't want to cheap out. Second husband...but, oh well, trying to keep him! Anyway, I was quoted 290E for a superior (not standard) overlooking the garden, buffet breakfast included. And still in that wonderful part of Paris!!!

francophile03 Apr 11th, 2004 10:55 AM

You received a pretty good rate inclusive of breakfast. I agree about the location.

Have you considered Hotel duc de Saint Simon? It's not in St. Germain but it is close.

glsebs Apr 11th, 2004 10:56 AM

WOW!
That is a great rate....grab it!! I have never seen Relais Christine for that price even in the winter. They must be hurting....the lowest rate I have ever seen at Relais Christine for a standard room without breakfast is 300 Euros! I loved the D'Aubusson but the rate for a standard room without breakfast is 260 Euros. The Relais Christine would be the better deal for a comparable hotel experience.

francophile03 Apr 11th, 2004 11:08 AM

I'd never seen that low of a rate too. In fact, its sister hotel in the Marais, Pavillon de La Reine, charges at least high 300+ for the lowest category and that's without breakfast.
