I have biked for years around many parts of Europe with a tent on my bike and it is not only the cheapest way to go and one of the best - seeing the lay of the land and in campings meeting the mainly Europeans who stay in campings (as they call campgrounds).

Even in big cities like Paris, London, Rome and Florence you will find camps on the edge of the cities, well connected to the city centers by public transit - Campings are well equipped with decent showers (far better than I find in many hotels!), bathrooms, a camp store for necessities and food and nearly always a cafe (bar) - restaurant that can be lively at night as folks from all over Europe gather there - and most have swimming pools - feel free to ask questions that I may be able to respond to.

One free guide is the European Planning & Rail Guide that you can download free from Budget Europe Travel Service (BETS) which will give you beaucoups itinerary ideas in general and you may want to also use the train system to quickly relocated - you can put your bikes on trains in many countries - anyway for their free online guide- http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/id2.html

PalenQ Feb 10th, 2013 04:04 PM

I'll give some thought and time to your questions in the next few days and perhaps others will too though Fodorites are NOT the camping crowd - but tend more to the luxury end of the hotel market IME.

cathies Feb 10th, 2013 04:17 PM

Candy this isn't an SMS service, you can use full words!

candy7727 Feb 10th, 2013 04:34 PM

Ok first time on here will do better next time

candy7727 Feb 10th, 2013 04:39 PM

Thanks palen q. That free guide looks ok to start with cheers

cathies Feb 10th, 2013 04:49 PM

Thanks and welcome. You will get good advice.

adrienne Feb 10th, 2013 04:51 PM

I hope you speak a European language since your English won't work.

What the heck is a "wat?"

candy7727 Feb 10th, 2013 05:23 PM

would like help not remarks on my spelling thank you

StCirq Feb 10th, 2013 06:30 PM

Well, since we can barely read what you write, it's hard to give advice.

If you are an expert on sub-spelling texting, get on google and figure out camping sites for europe, assuming you can spell the right words to do so. There are brilliant camping places all over the Continent, but you do need to spell to get to their sites.

hetismij2 Feb 10th, 2013 10:25 PM

It's the folding bike part which is getting me. Most folding bikes won't take the weight of camping gear, and cycling with a full backpack, if you are intending to use trains and then cycle will not be easy or comfortable or safe either.

PalenQ Feb 11th, 2013 08:55 AM

would like help not remarks on my spelling thank you>

I understand your English and you angst about being treated rather poorly by some Fodorgarchs - nothing new there!

I suggest renting bikes once there - taking bikes on planes can be expensive - and with a train tie in you could rent bikes in several neat biking areas in different countries and then return the bike - many train stations even rent bikes and you can return them to other stations in some countries - for example

In Amsterdam rent a bike and putz around the Dutch countryside in this biker's paradise with separated bike paths going everywhere. Ditch the bike and take the train to Paris - and then go on to the Loire Valley and rent a bike there to explore that cyclist's paradise - then say go to Germany by train and rent a bike in some primo biking venue like the Mosel Valley (Cochem is a good base) - take a small tent you can carry in a backpack.

and you need only a book like Let's Go Europe to have listings for each city on camping sites - every city will have some - no need to do a Google search that would only leave you knowing little more than you started - Let's Go Europe is a great book for your type of travel - not only camps but budget hotels, hostels, etc.

candy7727 Feb 11th, 2013 07:44 PM

Thank you for your advice palen q

PalenQ Feb 12th, 2013 10:42 AM

candy7727 - do not let a few boorish rude Fodorgarchs keep you away - ask questions please and I and others will try to answer.

I'll be back to shed some more insights on planning a camping/cycling trip like I have done many many times and always loved - but it is not for everyone - there is a bit of travail in travel by bike - funky weather even in summer - for the best weather stick to southern countries but then it can be too hot in summer too! June or September are great times for biking-camping - the campings are not packed to the gills as they often are in popular areas.

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 11:49 AM

Thank you again palen q not staying away from here as your insight is very use full and very good advice I have ordered that book waiting for it to arrive. Will also come on here even when I am traveling for advice any more us full things you can give me much appreciated

hetismij2 Feb 12th, 2013 12:07 PM

I don't have a problem with the cycling camping tour -I think it is a great idea, but you can't realistically do it on a folding bike. You need a good touring bike, with enough gears, and baggage carriers so you can put your luggage, tent etc in paniers on the bike, to keep it balanced.

Cycling on a folding bike, with a backpack full of clothes, tent sleeping bag etc is madness and asking for an accident.

Talking of which do make sure you have medical coverage for your trip, not every country is a bike friendly as the Netherlands, and accidents do happen!

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 12:28 PM

Thank you for your advice my filing bike has gears and panners. And brand new so hope fully have no problems will be traveling on trains as well I also have one of those bike buggys as well so I hopefully might use that to after wat you have said buy if you got advice on traveling around Europe please let me no many thanks

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 12:40 PM

That's a thought wre and wat cost is medical insurance. Is it the same as travel insurance. All new to this so treat me kindly please. Some questions might sound stupid to you on here but I am a beginner thanks. Leave advice any welcome

jamikins Feb 12th, 2013 12:44 PM

What do wre and wat mean?? Are they acronyms for something? I genuinely don't know....

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 12:52 PM

These are spelling mistakes as my phone makes them some times. Or some are abbreviations for texting to which I have found out on here Some people don't like and others help any way

jamikins Feb 12th, 2013 12:56 PM

It's not that people don't like them necessarily...it just makes it really difficult to figure out what you are asking or how to help you. The average age of people who post here tend to be older (not old!!) so they aren't likely to be used to text...and it takes too much time to decipher between spelling mistakes and text speak that they are not familiar with. The easier you make it for us to help, the better your help will be...

For example...oh still didn't explain what wre and wat were suppose to be...are they spelling mistakes? If so, what should they be?

suze Feb 12th, 2013 12:57 PM

I think traveling by train and with your folding bike could work. What I'm questioning is actually "camping" equipment. It seems like you plan would work better using hostels. Then you wouldn't have much a heavy load to bike around with.

jamikins Feb 12th, 2013 12:58 PM

Sorry, should say...YOU still didn't explain.

Also some people just won't be bothered trying to figure out what you are trying to say so wont bother taking the time to help you.

Just something to think about! :)

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 01:01 PM

We're And what. My age is 50

jamikins Feb 12th, 2013 01:03 PM

YOur age wasn't my point. I was just trying to help you get better advice. I'll leave you to it!

Enjoy your holiday!

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 01:03 PM

Thanks suze will how fully do that to was thinking about all these things that's why asking to see what's best. And the advice I am getting is good

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 01:06 PM

You asked what there where and I wrote them for you not being nasty to you. Just put my age to show never to old to learn

suze Feb 12th, 2013 01:07 PM

oh for goodness sake. stop yelling at the woman. if you can't figure out her questions just leave it be.

it's pretty obvious to me the kind of information she's seeking. unfortunately i don't know about campgrounds in Europe.

i do know arriving by train to major cities, it's easy enough to find your way around. use a backpackers-style guidebook, go to the tourist office or at the train station for information, use the internet to book your hostel from one city to the next.

except for wanting to haul camping gear on a folding bike, none of this is all that unusual.

suze

jamikins Feb 12th, 2013 01:12 PM

Suze I was genuinely trying to help. I think you will find that I never yell at people. More people are likely to provide help if its easy to understand. Not one bit of my posts were snarky or meant in a mean way.

If you are happy with the advice you are getting that is great. Like I said, enjoy your holiday.

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 01:14 PM

Thank you suze. My I'd names my old dogs name and I am a man. But thank you for standing up for me

suze Feb 12th, 2013 01:18 PM

Oops sorry, sir.

Sometime people on this forum get into giving lectures instead of giving help.

jamikins, I know you proably meant well, but if I were a 1st time poster here (like Mr Candy is) it's just not very welcoming feeling is all.

If I am able to read and understand his post, I don't see why other people can't do so as well.

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 01:22 PM

That's ok don't think till now that my I'd would look like I was a girl haha thank you again suze

suze Feb 12th, 2013 01:33 PM

You're welcome.

Another online resource that might have more people who travel similar to the way you want to go is at The Lonely Planet's website. Their forum is called "The Thorn Tree". There are more backpackers, budget, and adventure travelers there.

Fodor's is typically a bit more mainstream.

thursdaysd Feb 12th, 2013 01:34 PM

Well, could be that trying to read the garbage being written here doesn't put people in a helpful frame of mind. If the poster can't be bothered to write readable English, I can't be bothered to be helpful.

candy7727 Feb 12th, 2013 01:35 PM

That's great got some good advice on here a swell will try there to
