Another vote for the Canon S3 - I've had mine since it came out last May. I don't find it heavy to carry or bulky to use, like ira I have a small camera pouch with a strap to carry it over my shoulder.

I just bought the SD800. It's fabulous. It's going with me as a backup for the 30D.

Does the SD800 have extra zoom power that makes the image stabalization necessary? Or is it the standard 3x optical plus digital zoom.

Its a 4X optical zoom but the image stabilization also comes in handy in low light situations.

Regarding the weight issue, the SD800IS weighs about 6 ounces fully loaded with battery and sim card. The S3IS weighs about a pound.

Our family has had 4 Canons in the digital elph series. My daughters have ones that are 3mp and 4 years old. Both cameras are literally wearing out, and need to be replaced. I am looking at the SD1000; any feedback? Love the size (and the price) and the camera has a viewfinder (really a must for us).

The new SD1000 look striking, but doesn't have the wide angle lens of the SD800 nor the IS of the the 700/800. I don't see the appeal of it.

The appeal: (1) the very small size and (2) the lower price (about $100 less, I think.) I will be buying two of them. My daughters are very satisfied with the elph cameras they have had for 3.5 years, which do not have either IS or a wide angle. Compactness is important to them. Price is important to me.

I bought a 700 is and I am thrilled with it. The pictures it takes are very good, and the image stabilization is a complete necessity for me as I have a shaky hand. As for the 800, I do not know the features that well, but the 700 has all of the things I want, and a 2.5" lcd is large enough.

Just for the record I am a complete amateur, so I have no idea what a 28mm vs 35mm lens is.

Yes, it looks like the 1000 is a replacement for the 600. For about the same price as before, slightly higher resolution and newer processor, face recognition, etc.

It's a pretty good product. But just want to point out that even though the number is higher, it's actually a replacement for the 600, and not an upgrade from the 700 or 800.

I was debating on getting the SD800, but went to a party with a friend of mine who had the SD1000. Not only was it weeny (I really want a small pocket camera), but it made everything look beautiful. Every picture she took blew the photos from other cameras at the party away, so I went with the 1000 and I LOVE it!

The difference between '28mm' and '35mm' lenses is significant.

If you want to take pictures of beautiful buildings in Europe, many of which are located in small squares, you are forced to take pictures in close proximities. The '35mm' lenses are not wide enough to capture the entire building.

Before digital cameras, I always carried a 24mm lense just for these kind of pictures. But at almost 2 pounds when attached to the camera, it was a pain to lug around.

This thread is great. I'm looking to but a Canon, too. Trying to decide between the 600, the 1000 and the 700.

From research on line,I'm leaning toward the 700 because of the longer zoom and image stabilization. However, I haven't been able to find one in a store to check the size and "feel" of it. How does it compare to the tiny 600/1000? Also some forums say that the 700 is very fragile. Any experience with this?

Does anyone have thoughts on the 600 vs. the 1000? The 1000 replaces the 600 and has 7 megapixels, but the 600s are still available. I have a friend who loves her 600 and says I should get one while they're still on the market, but she can't tell me why.
