Boston Area Get Together

Okay - it seems Atlanta has their plans well under way for a get together. Is anyone out there in the New England area interested in having one?

Art Jun 7th, 2001 10:16 AM

C'mon you Bostonians, get it together. I'm thinking of retiring back to New England as most of my family is in that area so I expect to see other Fodorites there!!!
Cheers
Art
Stacey Jun 11th, 2001 04:33 AM

Thanks for the push, Art. It doesn't seem to be helping, but I'm trying not to take it personally :)

Audrey Jun 11th, 2001 06:18 AM

I'm game!

Topper Jun 11th, 2001 09:04 AM

oh come on

nancy Jun 11th, 2001 09:46 AM

Stacey,
i live in Southern VT, so a 2+hr drive does not seem too bad to me!
When were you thinking?
We are going to Italy soon, ewill not be back until the 10th july, then my husband is telling the children he is divorcing me!
(Long story posted here under other threads)
BUT, even though i have lived in VT for 30 yrs, I do not know my way around Boston well.
but, since I am going to italy, and will be negotiating the streets of Rome, and driving to the Naples airport to pick up a friend, I think I can be adventurous enough to try Boston!

Good idea.
If it does not fly right away, let's keep trying, maybe some people are away on vacation.
I do not want to wait until Art retires "back home" for one.
Art,
Do you really want to retire back to the land of cold and leafless (for half the year) trees?! :)

stacey Jun 11th, 2001 10:33 AM

Nancy - I've been following your plans for Italy closely. Fingers crossed for you that is all goes well.

I'm thinking early September. I'm going to be away on business from the 12th of July through the 30th and our fiscal year ends 30 Aug - so that month will be busy.

Don't worry - I live 45 minutes from Boston and I know it about as well as I know London - and seeing I've only been there twice...... We can pick someplace just outside the city or easy to get to.

I guess we can wait to see what else we can for responses.

AUDREY - is that a good email address?

I'm going to start an evite page and work from there.

ART - should we keep you in the loop in case your home visiting?

Audrey Jun 11th, 2001 11:45 AM

Yes, Stacey, this is my real, I'm-not-afraid-of-spam (well, sort of) e-mail address. And I live in Southern New Hampshire, about 90 minutes from Boston.
Someone copied your message onto the US forum, so perhaps there will be more "takers" from there!

nancy Jun 11th, 2001 12:40 PM

Stacey,
thanks for your thoughts.
September is good.
this is my real address, so please keep me/ this site posted as to any plans.
Audrey,
South-east or south-west N.H?
Audrey Jun 11th, 2001 03:18 PM

Nancy: southwest (Peterborough); are you in Brattleboro?

stacey Jun 11th, 2001 03:46 PM

Hey guys = if it's just the three of us - I'll come to you. No problem at all.

Nano Jun 11th, 2001 05:52 PM

How about Portsmouth? I'm in Portland, Maine. Wouldn't that be a great midway point? September would be lovely. Let me know. I'll be around after we return from our France and Belgium trip (6/21-7/9).

Art Jun 11th, 2001 06:30 PM

Stacey, yes keep me in the loop. I may try to be the first to visit all GTG areas. I was just back there this weekend for my niece's wedding inn Brunswick Me. Beautiful wedding and reception. We then had a family GTG on Sunday at one of my other niece's and her husband. Beautiful weather. I told my family that if the could guaranty that weather for most of the year I'd move back in a NewYork minute.
Nancy. I know about the winters, but my son doesn't want to stay in So Cal when he gets his PHD, so I'll no longer have anything to tie me here. Besides, if I'm retired and it snows or rains, I'll just stay home (or go to Europe).
Cheers
Art

Jen Jun 11th, 2001 06:43 PM

I'd be up for a Boston get-together...wearing my new pin of course!

Betsy Jun 11th, 2001 07:18 PM

Art!

Are you coming to the SF gathering on July 26? Do!

jill Jun 11th, 2001 07:22 PM

i am in Portland right now but live in Boston- I am game!

Neal Sanders Jun 12th, 2001 04:40 AM

Ummm, did anyone have a date in mind?

stacey Jun 12th, 2001 04:45 AM

Portsmouth NH sounds like it might be good......

Neal - we're thinking early Sept.

Jen Jun 12th, 2001 05:22 AM

Stacey - please keep me in the loop about this...early September is tough for me, but I think it would be fun to meet everyone!

nancy Jun 12th, 2001 07:53 AM

Sounds better and better!
Would love to see you nano, and this would be a fun way to do so.
Audrey, I am just north of Bratt!
so, you are really only about an hr away.
Art,
I completely understand, about location/ being home for children, etc.
And you are so right!
You can do what a good many smart ones do up here, , and leave for brief respites during those LONG winter months!
So, of course you can make it back to N.E, for this.
It would be fun to meet you.
Hope this flies!!
I have always been so envious of all the "big city" folks , with their get- togethers!
Thanks Stacey for bringing this up!
ncgrrl Jun 12th, 2001 08:46 AM

Could I invite myself to the event? I haven't made plans yet for my fall trip yet and I could schedule a vacation around this gathering.

If the event is held in Portsmouth NH I could fly into Manchester NH and drive over.

nancy Jun 12th, 2001 03:43 PM

Of course you can!
But at this point , it still seems to be a virtual get-together !
When do you need to make your plans by?

nano Jun 12th, 2001 04:54 PM

What if...I took a chance and suggested Sunday, September 16th at Noon? In Portsmouth, NH. After all, we Fodorites are darn good travel planners and we like to look forward to our trips months in advance, so voila, here's another adventure to get excited about! Would this date work for you?

Maine-iac Jun 12th, 2001 05:47 PM

From Brunswick Maine: I'd love to join you, but I shall be in Europe in the Fall. (Oh I just love saying that!)

Stacey Jun 12th, 2001 05:54 PM

hey folks - I tried to send an evite earlier, but I got a lot of them back. Could everyone who's interested send me a quick email with a good address and I'll try it again.

Answer these few questions (personal preference) for me, as suggested by Neal and then we can go from there:

weekday vs weekend
lunch vs dinner
Portsmouth vs Boston (please think parking, driving, pricing...... )

Looking forward to hearing from everyone and to the party!

Topper Jun 13th, 2001 04:11 AM

A Boston Fodorite gathering won't be complete without Donna, the expert on Paris, New England, etc., etc. Anyone hear from her?

Jen Jun 13th, 2001 04:58 AM

Stacey - this e-mail is good for me, and I received your evite.

Here are my preferences:

Weeknight
Dinner
Boston-area (Portsmouth is difficult to get to from Boston area on a weeknight b/c of outbound traffic.)

FYI Jun 13th, 2001 05:01 AM

Donna (DJKBooks) is in Paris for the next ten days. I'm sure you'll hear from her when she returns.

sharona Jun 13th, 2001 07:41 AM

Hi Stacey, et al. Please count me in as well. I am taking a year long leave of absence from my job starting in early July (and then leaving for Europe 3 days later!) so anytime works for me. Boston area is probably better. After Labor Day is also better (family reunion time). The above e-mail address is good.

You may want to post this on the US forum as well. There are a few regular Boston/ New England posters who might be interested.

ncgrrl Jun 13th, 2001 07:46 AM

I'll vote for a weekend event so the locals don't have rush around and get home to put kids to bed.

Also a lunch would leave the afternoon available for talk.

Hotels in NH about 1/3 the cost of hotels in Boston which is a big factor for me. Plane to Boston or Manchester are about the same for me.

Stacey, I'll email you directly because I don't want my email known to all.

Thank you for taking the time to organize this.

Maggie Jun 13th, 2001 09:34 AM

Stacey,
I'd be interested in joining. Live somewhat north of Boston but come into the city every day so no fear of getting lost in the Big Dig. Either Boston or Portsmouth work for me. My eamil address is real! Keep me posted Thanks.
Maggie

Nano Jun 13th, 2001 03:01 PM

Hi Stacey,
This address should work for me, but I didn't see an e-vite. My preference is lunch/weekend/Portsmouth, but all alternatives will work too. Thanks for organizing this. Must go as my husband is reading out loud from a guide book and I am obviously not listening!!

nancy Jun 13th, 2001 03:19 PM

Stacey,
Will E- you , but this is real address.
Either location will work for me as it is at least 2+hrs. to both.
Weekend better, so I can make plans for children to be with dad, or auntie.
Day or evening, do not care, will probably spend the night anyway, and make a "full event" for it!
Weekend suggested is O.K also

Ann Jun 15th, 2001 06:57 AM

Stacey, over here from the US board (haven't been to Europe in years, got jealous reading about it ;-). If US'ers are included, I'm game. Prefer weekend, lunch, and indifferent to location as I live in Boston area. Sept. 16 works for me. And yes, this is my real e-mail address (hope I don't get spam now).

Ann

linda Jun 15th, 2001 07:13 AM

Hello, Just back today from a self-imposed 'vacation' from this web site. I would love to join this fun get-together! I have a flexible schedule and would be open to all suggestions regarding time and place. Also live in southern NH. Will watch for more updates.

linda

abc Jun 17th, 2001 08:36 AM

Anything more definite on this get together? Pin down a date & location yet?

nancy Jun 17th, 2001 12:21 PM

I got a strange E- today.
It ewas from some company, and it said something to the effect
Fodorite get together, Wednesday, September 12th.
But that was it!?

nancy Jun 17th, 2001 12:49 PM

Stacey,
Oh is my face red!
I opened this up quickly this am, but never read the total thing.
What an interesting idea,
Evites!
I did respond, so keep me posted.
Nano is probably very busy trying to get ready for their soon departure!
Nano Jun 17th, 2001 04:13 PM

Hi Stacey,
Got your e-vite. A mid-week get together would be a little tricky, so hopefully there's a weekend date we can all agree on.

stacey Jun 17th, 2001 05:12 PM

I think we can safely say Sunday, Sept. 16 around 1 (ish) in Portsmouth NH. I'm researching places now. I'm kind of swamped at work trying to plan for a trade show the last two weeks in July. So, it may be early August before I send out an official evite to everyone. I'll send it to everyone who's responded here and to my personal email addresses.

If anyone has suggestions about where to go for lunch, let me know. Really looking forward to this...
