Book rave: A Thousand Days in Venice
Hi
Maybe lots of you already know about this book, but someone just gave it to me. It is a memoir of a middle-aged American chef who fell in love with a Venetian; she then moved to Venice and married him. This book evokes Venice so wonderfully that I keep skipping ahead to see what's next. On the one hand, I don't think she's Tolstoy as a writer, but on the other hand, she's done something right by grabbing my interest and enhancing it on every page. Those of you who are Venice-lovers will smile to yourself as she describes locations and restaurants you will recognize, among the perhaps overly-literary prose about her romance. Great travel book, in an usual way. |
Thanks, Elaine, I'm between books, recently back from Venice and this sounds perfect!
|
Just reserved this at our local library. I'm really ready for some mindless summer reading! \:D/
|
I agree - I read this book a while back and I loved her descriptions of life in Venice. Thanks for mentioning this.

Hi, I just returned from a trip to Italy which ended with 4 days in Venice. I picked up this book just before I began the trip and read it while in Italy. She has a way with storytelling and I loved it. What fun to read about someone who has actually done what I only dream about. Live for a time in Venice!!!
|
my mom and I will be in venice in Aug. I am going to pick this up tomorrow as part of her b-day gift!
|
Yes, this is my absolute favorite "American woman in Italy" book! Her love story is not the usual cliche, but is a happily ever after fairytale nonetheless. Her story has actually inspired me in my own situation...
|
I also read this book (recommendation from this board) after my trip to Venice. Wish I had read it before going & ventured to Lido while I was there.
Tell us about the inspiration Nutella. |
Elaine,
Thanks so much for this recommendation. I started it last night and could hardly put it down. It's such a delight. Next trip to Venice I'm going to Vino Vino! adrienne |
Mclaurie, let's just say that the book inspired me to accept an invitation from my own "blueberry eyed stranger" ; )
|
Thank you Elaine, I'm posting it to my public library request list immediately ;-)

After reading the book, check out their current website: http://www.beiricordi.com/deblasis.html

Thanks, Elaine! I've ordered to enjoy after my return from Venice.
|
Statia, don't wait. Read it before you go. I wish I had.
Nutella, hope his apartment was in better condition #o |
Thanks for the info, McLaurie. I will do that if I get it beforehand. However, I have a feeling with my mail having to be sent overseas I won't get it until after I return.
|
LOL mclaurie. Perhaps you will have to wait for MY book to find out ; )

If you go to Amazon.com and put in the title, you can read like 18 pages of the book. Then I ran out and bought it and really enjoyed it!
